New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) A three-day exhibition on mobile telephony featuring a host of domestic and multinational companies, as also an exhibition tracing the evolution of phone handsets, kicks off here Friday.

Organised by the Indian Cellular Association, Mobile Asia 2006 at the Pragati Maidan exhibition grounds will also feature some new launches of phone handsets, discounted subscription schemes and competitions, officials said.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil will inaugurate the event, featuring companies like Airtel, AOL, Haier, I-mate, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Reliance Communications, Sagem, Samsung and Tata Teleservices, the organisers said.

India has seen an unprecedented growth in the mobile phone subscriber base, from two million in 2000 to over 100 million now, and the country is slated to emerge as the world's second largest market after the US by 2008, the organisers said.

The exhibition will feature the emerging trends in mobile telephony and acquaint visitors with the new products, technologies, applications and mobile games that will be made available in the future.
