Chandigarh, Oct 27 (IANS) Ahead of assembly polls slated early next year, the Punjab government Friday announced the formation of Barnala as the state's 20th district.
The polls are scheduled in February-March.
The decision to carve out a new district was taken by the state's council of ministers here.
The district headquarters will be at Barnala town.
Barnala, earlier part of the state's Sangrur district, will have 270 revenue villages besides small towns. Barnala town is nearly 180 km from state capital Chandigarh.
