Islamabad, Sep 14 (IANS) The Gawadar port in Balochistan province would be made operational by Dec 30 with most of the work on the first phase of the deep sea port completed, the Pakistani senate was told.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Kamil Ali Agha told the house during question hour on Wednesday that 90 percent work on the first phase was complete, reported Online news agency.

The minister said Rs.14,900 million would be spent in the first stage and Rs. 525 million spent in the second stage.

In the second phase, 21 berths would be constructed, but construction work had not started as yet, he said. The work was delayed as money given by China in the first phase was only for the construction of small ports and light berths. We have sought more money from China, he said.

He rejected the opposition's allegations that the money allocated for Gawadar was being utilised on Karachi Port.

Ghulam Sarwar Khan, the minister for labour, manpower and overseas Pakistanis, said the government was making all-out efforts to reduce unemployment, adding that 3.23 million people were unemployed in the country.

State Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Raza Hayat Haraj said the government had drawn up a programme to impart training and skills to two million people and small loans would be given to graduate and postgraduate youths. He said that Pakistani manpower was being sent to South Korea, Libya and other foreign countries.
