Shimla, Sep 15 (IANS) It's been an endless wait for the family of an Indian worker who died two months ago in Saudi Arabia but whose body is still to come back home to his Himachal Pradesh village.
Generator operator Vichatra Singh, 38, reportedly died of a heart attack in Teethrath town of Saudi Arabia on July 14. He had been working in Saudi Arabia for 13 years.
His family in his village Mainja in Kangra district, 240 km from here, say they have already performed the last rites even though the body hasn't been flown into India.
Until last week, the family did not even know the whereabouts of his body.
'We have been informed this week on the phone that the body of my brother Vichatra is in a mortuary in Taslif town of Saudi Arabia,' said Ishwar Dass, Vichatra's elder brother.
'We have again taken up the matter with the Saudi embassy in New Delhi and the process could take some time still,' said a state government official.
The Kangra district administration has come in for a lot of flak for its inaction -- despite the family informing officials about the incident and asking that the matter be taken up with the external affairs ministry so the body could be flown back.
They had even handed over Rs.300,000 for the expenses. But the concerned clerk did not inform the district magistrate in Kangra about the matter, sources said.
The district magistrate learnt about the incident from a local newspaper report, several weeks later.
