Ahmedabad, Oct 25 (IANS) A major fire broke out early Wednesday at the Jamnagar refinery of the Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries and was contained soon after, company officials said.
'The fire was at the hydro-treater unit number two of the refinery. It has since been contained. The unit was immediately evacuated. There are no casualties,' a Reliance official said. 'We are still assessing the damage,' he added.
The facility is located some 300 km south of Ahmedabad and 25 km from the main city.
The refinery - the world's largest at a single location - has a primary refining capacity of 660,00 barrels of crude per day and accounts for close to 25 percent of the country's production.
Experts said the unit is critical to the sprawling refinery complex since it removes impurities from oil products so they have a higher-octane value and fetch a much better price. It may take a week or two to restart the unit, they added.
The company's shares were not trading Wednesday since the markets were closed on account of Eid-ul-Fitr.
