Mumbai, Oct 21 (IANS) The markets Saturday opened firm in the special 75-minute Muhurat trading with the BSE 30-share benchmark index (Sensex) rising to 12,715.74, up 6.34 points or 0.05 percent.
The mid-cap stocks rose by 64.98 points to 5,367.07 level - up 1.23 percent - and the small-cap moved to the 6,490.33 mark, up 104.29 points, gaining 1.63 percent.
India's two leading stock exchanges, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Saturday conducted a special 75-minute Muhurat trading for the 'Samvat year 2063' to mark the Diwali celebrations.
The special trading also assumed significance as it was the first time that the Sensex was trading in five figures in a Mahurat trading.
ITC Ltd was the biggest gainer at the BSE while Tata Steel, Satyam Computer, Ranbaxy, BHEL, Infosys Technologies, TCS, Grasim Industries and Bajaj Auto were the other key gainers.
However, Hero Honda, ICICI Bank and Tata Motors traded in the red.
The trading was conducted in both cash and derivatives segments between 6.15 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. The transaction during the special session would be settled as a separate settlement on Oct 26, a BSE statement here said.
Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, was worshipped on this auspicious day at the BSE to mark the beginning of the new financial year as well as the beginning of the Gujarati new year. A majority of the brokers hail from Gujarat.
The occasion provides a sentimental touch with the trading members trying to get a few new accounts singed to mark a beginning.
