Nagpur, Oct 9 (IANS) A retired security guard committed suicide by hanging from the railings of the state legislature complex here, police said Monday.
The incident had created a flutter earlier in the day when the body was believed to be that of a distressed farmer.
As the police were completely clueless about the identity of the dhoti-kurta clad man in the absence of a suicide note or any other paper on his person, a young man Roshan Bangar approached them and claimed the deceased was his grandfather Gajanan Dhawral, who had gone missing since Thursday.
An official of Sitabuldi police station said Roshan saw the picture of Gajanan's body on a TV news channel.
Roshan, son of Gajanan's daughter Ramabai, told the police his grandfather lived with them as he did not get along well with his wife.
A resident of Ayodhya Nagar here, Gajanan retired as a guard from a local shoe factory about five years ago.
The body was mistaken for that of a farmer from a nearby village perhaps because of the attire and the spot - the compound wall of the state legislature the old man chose to end his life.
Meanwhile, nine more farmers have committed suicide in different parts of Vidarbha since Sunday, taking the toll of the month to 35, Vidarbha Jan Andolan leader Kishore Tiwario told IANS.
As many as 125 farmers ended their lives in September alone due to mounting debts and failed crop. The number since July 1, the day on which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced a relief package of Rs.32.75 billion, has crossed 300, Tiwari said.
