Nagpur, Oct 9 (IANS) In what appears to be a case of farmer suicide, the body of an elderly villager was found hanging Monday morning from the gate of the state legislature complex here, creating a flutter.
A security guard posted at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) branch opposite the complex, known as the Vidhan Bhavan, saw the body early in the morning and alerted passersby, who in turn informed police.
Sitabuldi police, who took the body to the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for post mortem, could not establish the identity of the man as no suicide note or any other paper was found on his person.
Though the post mortem report was yet to come, police sources told IANS that it appeared to be a case of farmer suicide. The man, in the age group 60-65, was clad in a white kurta and dhoti.
Meanwhile, nine more farmers committed suicide in the different parts of Vidarbha since Sunday, taking the toll of the month to 35, Vidarbha Jan Andolan leader Kishore Tiwario told IANS.
As many as 125 farmers ended their lives in September alone due to mounting debts and failed crop. The number since July 1, the day on which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced a relief package of Rs.32.75 billion, has crossed 300, Tiwari said.
