Shooting Dhamaal wasn't just 'plane' funny

Sometimes the funniest scenes can turn out to be the scariest ones to shoot is what filmmaker Indra Kumar (Dil, Beta, Masti) experienced while shooting his comic capper Dhamaal.

The mid air sequence which is currently being shown in the Dhamaal promos has Ashish Choudhary and Asrani trying to take control of a plane going berserk.

Recollecting his hair-raising experience, Indra Kumar narrates, "The scene required Ashish and the veteran comedian to be shown riding a plane which is going out of control. We were shooting this one in Baramati, in Maharashtra interiors, because it has very less air traffic. We were filming it from another chopper and had to keep the door of the chopper open so that the lens of the camera goes outside."

"There were big mountains all around and dense forest below. It was a very scary position that we were in. The wind was blowing so fiercely that we had to catch hold of the cameraman. When we used to sight the plane from far away we used to be ready for our shot but when the plane would come nearer to us we would get scared as it would get too near to be shot. A collision with the plane was just about avoided two to three times. It took us around 5 hours for just a few shots," Kumar adds.

Regarding the difference between his earlier multi starrer Masti (2004) and Dhamaal, he says, "Masti was mild but Dhamaal is wild." About why his film doesn't boast of a female lead, he tells us, "There was no room for a heroine in our script. When we wrote the script we had planned to sign a girl opposite Sanjay but then the other heroes too would have demanded a heroine so we dropped the idea. We had also planned to have an item song but scrapped it. We have taken a big risk by making a completely male dominated film."

Dhamaal was simultaneously shot with Dutt going through his court trials. Didn't it hamper Dhamaal's shooting schedules? "No it didn't but yes we were worried and wanted to complete the shooting before his terms. He was in fact very co-operative. We were praying that he be released soon. We had earlier cancelled the premiere of the film but now that he is back we are going to have a premiere." Kumar adds.

The director was all praise for Dutt. "Sanjay is one actor who needs just a single briefing and he would be ready for the shot. We chose him for the film because he is among the rare breed who can appear tough and look vulnerable at the same time. He has that innocence in his smile and I wanted my character to have both the shades," reveals the Masti maker
