Part 55

Upon seeing his friend Arjun after so long a time, Krishna immediately pulled him into a warm embrace while the rest of the Yadava family gladly welcomed him into the temporary royal complex. Walking through a series of flowery arches Krishna said, "Well, Arjuna while I did receive the intimation from Dharma raja, I couldn't really bother looking it through." He chuckled, "So, why exactly have you taken it upon yourself to visit what looks like, every single temple in our Bharatvarsha?" After hearing his tale Krishna laughed again and patting Arjun on the back he said, "Great choices all of them!"

After spending a few days in Prabhas, Krishna and Arjun arrived at Raivatak, near Dwarka. There Krishna escorted Arjun to the quarters designated for him, and accompanied him as he received and consumed the various delicacies prepared by the women. Immediately as they settled down on their berths, Arjun broke into a narrative of his experiences. Krishna listened to him, occasionally interjecting a point or two. Lost in conversation, they finally fell asleep at some late hour, content to finally be in the company of one another.

The next day, the friends left for Dwarka on Krishna's chariot. By his orders the entire city of Dwarka had been decked up to reveal its most beauteous features. The pavements were adorned with bright drapes hanging from the marble pillars on either side. Flowers covered the roadway. The men stood in lines to sing praises, while the women of clans of Andhak, Bhoj and Vrishni showered flowers from the arches and windows. Descending from the chariot Arjun first greeted the elders and then his contemporaries. Soon after, the young Princes of Dwarka welcomed him into the main palace complex.

After a few days, the Yadavas went to Raivatak once more for the Great Festival of the Yadu and the Andhak clans. Reaching the sacred site, all men donated heavily to the Brahmans residing there and then receded to the celebration-zone.

If you happened to take a mental stroll around that area- you would find most Yadava princes intoxicated, roaming with their wives and friends amidst the singers and dancers of celestial quality. Some were aboard on divine vehicles, some used the regular ones and others walked on foot. All were enjoying themselves immensely. In a corner Balaram could be seen getting cozy with his wife Revati while his personal band of gandharvas played along his tune. King Ugrasen could also be seen surrounded by the gandharvas. Shamba, Pradyumna, Akroor, Sarana, Gada, Babhru, Vidurath, Nishatha, Charudeshna, Prithu, Viprithu, Satyas, Satyaki, Bhangakaar, Mahaarav, Haardikya and Udhdhav also roamed under the effect of various liquors.

It was then that Krishna arrived at the spot accompanied by Arjun. While they made their way through the unsteady crowd they came across Subhadra who was roaming around with her friends. Seeing her, Arjun stopped in his path, speechless. Catching his staring, Krishna said with a sly smile, "Shame on you my friend! Now, now! Isn't that a casanova I see under those hermit robes?!" Arjun promptly blushed and Krishna, deciphering his look continued, "I don't know if you remember her, she's my sister, the daughter of my father and mother Rohini. Her name is Subhadra. Tell me, if your mind is made then shall I speak to Father about a possible alliance?"

Nodding faintly, Arjun said, "She's your sister, and of brother Balarama! Who in the three worlds would not be struck dumb by her beauty?! If you insist however then I should confess- find a way to make her mine!" Shooting him a look of incredulity Krishna said, "Well if it's that urgent then I suppose I must help." He laughed, "For a Kshatriya it is best to acquire a wife through a swayamvar, so you could wait till Father arranges one but-" Krishna said quickly, before Arjun's expression dropped, "But, my friend, abduction is also an honourable option! After all, who can say who she will choose in a swayamvar!" Deciding their course of action Arjun dispatched a quick messenger seeking permission from Yudhishthir for the marriage. The messenger promptly returned with an assent and blessings from him. Krishna meanwhile, filled in Subhadra about the developments and arranged for her to go to Raivatak.

On the stipulated date, Arjun sought out towards the forests claiming a strong urge for hunting while dressed in the best of apparels and Subhadra left for the temple near the peak of Mount Raivatak.

Arjun waited behind the tress till she worshipped Lord Shiva and the other Brahmans there. Jut when Subhadra set out for Dwarka, he leapt up on his new chariot, grabbed Subhadra round the waist and sped along the forest path. He turned to look at her, who had already giggling as she adjusted her garments. As their eyes met, she gave him a look that reminded him almost too much of her brothers and it was almost instantly that he realized that probably they were not going to be the only people racing up the narrow jungle path!

Likewise, as soon as Subhadra's disappearance became apparent, the Yadava warriors wielded their weapons and started after the duo. Stopping them, the still-tipsy Balaram confronted Krishna, "Krishna, look everyone wants to know your take on this. Arjun's behaviour is of course totally uncalled for! Say, which person  breaks the very plate he eats from?! Which snake will pardon one who kicks it on the hood?! By taking my sister away in this manner, Arjun has committed a similar crime and now I will burn him and his entire family down like a thousand headed venom-breathing serpent!" Open-mouthed, Krishna stared at him for a second. Then he uttered, with brevity, "Arjun is the best of his class. He, being a grandson of King Kuntibhoj, is also an integral part of our family. Also, he is a celebrated warrior. Other than Lord Mahadeva there is no one who could match up to his skills. If he marries Subhadra it will bring only prosperity to both the clans. Also, think about it- how would you like it if Arjun comes here, defeats us and marries Subhadra anyway? Think!" He finished with a sly smile. After brooding on it for a while, Balaram was pacified and he sent for the two of them requesting them to return for the nuptial rituals.

After the marriage was over, Arjun stayed in Dwarka for another year, hence completing his dozen. Then he left for Khandavaprastha with Subhadra, with Krishna accompanying them.

Eventually when they arrived in the city, they were received with much cheer, even the mountains, trees and rivers seemed ecstatic to see their beloved Prince again. After completing all rituals, Arjun came to meet Draupadi.
Even though she was happy for the union, she feigned anger and said, "Well, if it isn't the charmer of the West! Why are you here? The princess from the land of the Satvatas has probably shed a wealth of tears while she waits! You should totally give up all forms of modesty and go to her, in your room." Like this, Draupadi teased Arjun in various ways and finally he gave up and started apologizing over and over.

Later, Arjun asked Subhadra to appease Draupadi by putting on a cherry-hued cow-maids' dress. Complying, Subhadra first went to seek the blessing of Queen Kunti, and then entered the room of Draupadi.

Subhadra quietly sat down on the ground before Draupadi's bed and said with a smile, "Starting today, you have found the ideal servant for you, Maharaani!" Protesting loudly, Draupadi immediately descended to the ground and embraced her tightly. Laughing merrily she said to Subhadra, "I bless you, may you not have more co-wives than you have now!"
"I will ensure that for sure!" She answered coyly.

Seeing them bond, Arjun, Kunti and the the rest of the Pandavas heaved a collective sigh of relief.
