Veere Di Wedding, Movie Review: Happiness Is An Orgasm, Experience This

Worth your time and ticket. You will grab a few lessons of life and you won't be busy with your mobile as this breezy film gains momentum to converge into a very satisfying climax...

f I haven't said it all in my title, then here is exactly what I felt about the film.

As the firebrand four say it often in their lines, let me also say it in context of the makers: It needs balls to make such a film. I am not a sucker for films where the F word is used, but here its usage (mind you, frequent)  did not make me cringe even a wee bit. It just goes with the flow, it's required, in fact, many times you say it under your breath even before Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar or Shikha Talsani utter it.

They talk about the frequency of sex they have with their partners. They talk of one-night stands. They talk of condoms, even when they are in school. They talk of body-shaming. They talk of weight issues... They talk of everything under the sun- and it is not for the heck of titillation.

 s

Veere Di Wedding is pure celebration of life. And mind you in this entire celebration of friendship, there are so many lessons you learn, or, at least get reminded about: a) You live only once, don't f*** your life. b) Children should confide in their parents to make their life smooth. c) Parents are also responsible for their children's deviant behaviour. d) Marriage is a bed of compromises and sacrifices. e) Ostentatious revelry can be done away with, don't fake it.

Over to the Veeres.

a

Welcome back, Kareena. Bollywood was poorer without you. We want to see you doing lot more movies now. Kapoor genes continue to flow, making every expression count.

Sonam is the real definition of 'growth in an actor'; she is now always being better than she was in her preceding one. This girl has a very warm, pleasing smile, wonder why we only talk about her beauty and clothes.

Swara is astounding. Should I use that line... it needed b... to carry out this role? Mind you, she is a kick-ass actress and would you believe it if I tell you that she carries out a self-gratification scene for a full 15 seconds without making you say 'F***, why this?'

d

The big surprise is Shikha. Freestyle acting at its best, so natural, so not conscious before the camera.

Watch how each one of them carries off every costume she dons. Watch and make out how each one of them has had a ball while shooting the film. Watch and realise how much the filmmakers have believed in the film.

Sumit Vyas, who unexpectedly, has good amount of screen time, deserves a pat for holding his own.

Like always, I won't dwell on the story. Anyway, it has quite a few twists and turns.

I am going with FOUR.

Veere Di Wedding' review: More than a chick flick for sure

There's drama, there is melodrama, and more importantly, there is enough laughter to make you forget your woes.

Veere will make you laugh. and more as Kareena, Sonam, Swara and Shikha bring more than just another chick flick to theatres this weekend.

Hollywood might still be grappling with the "inclusion clause", but judging from Shashanka Ghosh's Veere Di Wedding, Bollywood has got it down pat.

You have the straight guys, the not so straight ones, the married ones, the single ones, the to-be-divorced ones, the slim ones and the plus-size ones. Together they all fit in so perfectly that for over two hours you are glued to the big screen.

Catching the first show of Veere Di Wedding is probably one of the best decisions we made that day. There's drama, there is melodrama, and more importantly, there is enough laughter to make you forget your woes.

The plot revolves around four childhood friends (Veeres as they are lovingly referred to by one mother) Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Avni (a deliciously cast Sonam Kapoor), Sakshi (Swara Bhaskar) and Meera (Shikha Talsania) who get together in Delhi to celebrate the wedding of Kalindi and her beau Rishab Malhotra (Sumeet Vyas).

What follows is a fast-paced look at each of their respective lives and their close bonds with each other shining through and bright.

Veere Di Wedding is more than a chick flick for sure, despite the fact that the antics of the four friends and their sartorial choices (come on its a Sonam Kapoor film after all) is what keeps us entertained throughout.

But there is enough gravitas wherever required, and all in all you come out feeling as if you've got a peek into each of their respective lives with all their complexities.

Kudos to the casting director for a superb job well done. This despite the fact that Kareena Kapoor Khan and to a certain extent Sonam Kapoor are the big names here - Swara and Shikha have well etched roles, sharing equal screen space with the other two.

Most importantly, each of the actresses brings her own unique talent to the fore, and nowhere do we get the feeling one is more prominent than the other.

Veere is the perfect movie for a girls' day out and is bound to make you laugh with some superbly timed dialogues. Sonam specially aces in her role as the desperate to get married hot shot lawyer. Not to be left behind by the angst ridden Swara and the perfectly cast Shikha and of course Kareena, who gets enough chance to show both her comic side as well as her dramatic chops.

Go watch it for sure.

Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania.

The tale of four best friends in the throes of quarter-life crisis is engaging. They wear their flaws on their sleeves and embrace their complexities with a sense of wry humour.

It isn't deep, but is fun as long as you don't take them or their privileged problems too seriously.

Full review coming up soon ...

Veere Di Wedding' review: Kareena Kapoor leads her girls to victory

The Shashanka Ghosh-directed film will go down as an engaging one that doesn't hurt the eye

The raunchy Bollywood romantic comedy Veere Di Wedding could be that guilty pleasure that's usually derived after watching a glossy hit sitcom like Sex And The City.

Plucky women, sassy attitude and their collective fabulousness make the women of Veere Di Wedding instantly likeable.

Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania, this friendship romp shouldn't be take too seriously. Their problems are steadfastly upper-crust, but Kareena is the anchor of this girl gang who have been thick friends since high-school.

It begins on a coltish, awkward note where four teenagers celebrate the end of their exams and their locker room talk, laced with popping a bubbly, to establish their personalities. It's a shaky start, but the film finds it bearing as the girls enter adulthood.

Kareena plays the pivotal protagonist Kalindi Puri, the commitment-phobe from a fractured home with warring parents; there's Sonam who plays Avni, a divorce lawyer who's a romantic at heart and spends precious minutes rebelling against her mother's wish to see her married.

Talsania plays Meera, a young rebel who elopes and is happily married in an inter-racial relationship; while actress Swara Bhaskar is Sakshi, the rich young woman who is on the brink of a nasty divorce.

They are emotionally-complex and are trying to figure out life, men and everything in between. And if a solution eludes them, they swear generously.

There's no denying that it was liberating as a viewer to watch the leading ladies in a Hindi film have feet of clay. They wear their vulnerabilities and failures like a badge of honour.

They aren't pious by any definition and are stoically uninhibited when it comes to lust and love.

It's Kareena's character that gets the maximum love from director Shashanka Ghosh. Her angst-ridden existence gives her ample space to flex her acting prowess. She comes out shining as a scarred young woman who isn't keen on being a radiant bride.

Bhaskar's risque act is a pleasure to watch. The wry-humour and their ribald inside jokes seemed organic and natural too.

The story and the twists aren't life altering or shocking, but the ladies and their kinship is organic enough to be believable. While the first half moves at a quick pace, the dramatic twists in the second half seemed a bit forced. But director Ghosh re-gains control towards the climax and ties it up well.

As far as bonding films go, it's a victory for Veere Di Wedding on that front. But what lets you down are the blatant attempts at plugging specific brands into the film. It's jarring and distracting.

While the women are a force to reckon with in this film, the men barring Sumeet Vyas as Rishabh Malhotra are decidedly forgettable. They are no match for the women in terms of personality or aura. It's a shame. But that shouldn't deter you from giving this romantic comedy a shot.

While this film isn't going to make you any wiser in love or life, Veere Di Wedding will go down as an engaging film that doesn't hurt the eye.

Don't miss it!
