PART 1

"Kya tum iss pani ko vapis is Bottle mein daal sakte ho Sameer?"

Naina's sharp questions pricked Sameer's heart. He couldn't believe it. NAINA, sweet, innocent, kind Naina was showering such questions at him. Her non-sarcastic, sweet voice, shooting the most sarcastic questions at him. Challenging him to do the impossible. Telling him, in her own indirect way, that like the Rose he had plucked couldn't be put back on the plant; like the water she had just spilt couldn't be put back in the bottle, her broken heart too couldn't be fixed, and Sameer couldn't be forgiven. It was just not possible. And as she walked away from him, all he could do was stare at her back.

She had changed. No not just changed.  She had become someone else. And it was all because of him. She had stopped feeling. No, she had stopped feeling for him. As far as he was concerned, she was done. And that hurt. It hurt badly. Like a fire was spreading all over him. Like he was burning, or maybe even worse. What had he done?

Sameer walked away from his friends lost deep in his thoughts. He didn't hear his friends calling his name. Naina was all that he could think of. In just a span of two days. It took her just two days to destroy 'Naina' and replace her with this imposter. No. He couldn't let this happen. It was Naina. She couldn't change. In this crazy world of absent-mothers and crazy-stepfathers, and his ever-spinning-on-its-axis life, she was a constant. His Nanu, his friends and his Naina.

"Naina, tum agar do kadam peeche logi to main chaar kadam chal ke tumhaare paas aaunga." He made a Sameer Maheshwari promise. And Sameer Maheshwari never broke his promises. Itna to sab jaante the.

However, life doesn't follow anyone's plans, and neither does it keep any track of promises. Promises are your personal property. You handle them. Sameer did make a promise, but he had no idea that in his promise-fulfilling quest, he was going to face a big trouble- who was at this very moment, stepping off the train at platform 4 of the railway station. A problem whose name was every teen-and-tween-aged girl's dream- Prem.

Prem Sharma, a 16 year old, sweet, playful, happy-go-lucky kinda guy, moving to his mother's hometown Ahmedabad with his mom. His dad passed away when he was very young and so he doesn't have many memories of him, but his mother has been the most wonderful parent, fulfilling the duties of both- mom and dad.

Sandhya (Prem's mother): arre oh Sharma ji. Kahan jaa rahe ho? Ye bag kaun uthayega? Tumhaari Maa?

Prem: vaise chaho to utha bhi sakti ho, MAA.

Sandhya: koshish achi thi. Lekin nhi. Isse to tu hi uthayega. Tujhe paal-pos k itna bada aur kis liye kiya hai maine?

Prem: bags uthaane ke liye?

Sandhya: *walking towards the exit* absolutely correct Sharma ji.

Prem: *picking up the bags and walking to his mother* Maaa please ye "Sharma ji" mat bulaaya karo. Kitni baar bola hai. Main 16 ka hun, 61 ka nahi!

Sandhya: okay Sharma ji

Prem: Maaa... Tum nhi sudhrogi

Sandhya: to tum koshish kyu karte ho? Acha ab jaldi chalo! Ghar pahunch ke saamaan set karna hai. Aur phir tum so jaana. Kal se tumhe school jaana hai

Prem: right boss. Vaise kya naam tha uss jagah ka?

Sandhya: oye aisa mat kaho. Mera puraana school hai vo. Uska mazaak nhi! And naam hai Pragati Vidya ka Mandir. Arre voh raha... AUTO!!!!

Prem: Maa!! Thoda dheere.

Sandhya: arre yeh Ahmedabad hai. Yahan dheere kuch nhi hota. Abhi abhi to aaye ho. Ab dekho kaise pataake phat te hain.

And how right she was. Prem had no clue of the fireworks this place was going to bring to his life. For that matter, neither did the other two.

AN: and thats it for now. Please do drop your valuable comments. They will be greatly appreciated. See u all in the next part! :)

PART 2:

The rest of the day was torturous for Sameer. Naina was so near, yet so far. Sitting at a distance that was no more than 2 feet, Sameer felt as though Naina was in a different world altogether. Though she was smiling, talking to Swati, and occasionally, Kamya and Hema, while she answered questions the questions shot at them by the teachers throughout the classes taught, Sameer could see very clearly the pieces of her shattered heart. He could see the sheer effort it took for Naina to curve her lips upwards into that half-hearted and fully-fake smile. The amount of strength it took for her to sit straight in the class, shoulders, and neck held high, instead of just crumbling to the floor. The jerk of attention that her body would give when Swati turned to talk to her and the slight slump her body would take as her best friend's attention shifted from her to something else. Yes, he was clearly observing her very closely, and each observation he made stabbed the knife of guilt deeper and deeper into his heart. What had he done?!

Naina was so ready for the day to be over! It was tough, pretending that nothing had happened. Pretending that there was no hole in her chest. Pretending that she was the same Naina Agarwal from the pre-Sameer era. Pretending that her life did not feel as of there was a void. When in all honesty, she felt pointless. Like there was no reason to any of it without him. And you know the worst part of it? the day was FAR from over. It was not just school that she had to fight Sameer Maheshwari in. Oh no. Her home, too, was filled with all things Sameer. Every corner of the house that she had hidden in while knitting the sweater for him, the radio, the happiness of her Pooja Didi as she built up her dreams and hopes for her upcoming life with her future husband- something that Naina had wanted with Sameer. And he had dashed everything in just one second. It must have been so easy for him. So why was it so damn hard for her!?  It wasn't fair at all. But, Life is not fair, as Naina was slowly realising now.

Prem and Sandhya stepped into their new home. It was Sandhya's childhood home, that had been left to her by her parents who had passed away a few years ago. Walking back into the house that had been the first home she had ever known, Sandhya was hit by millions of sweet memories. Memories of her mother and father, of her wedding, and of Prem's childhood.

Prem: Maa yahan to kuch bhi nahi badla. Bilkul vaisa hi hai.

Sandhya: Yahan to pichle 45 saalon se kuch nahi badla Prem. Sab kuch vaisa hi hai. Maa-papa ko gaye huye 7 saal ho chuke hain. Lekin main aaj bhi unn dono ko yahan mehsoos kar sakti hun. Pata hai, aaj bahut saalon baad mujhe aisa lag raha hai, ke main vapas ghar aa gyi hun.

Prem smiled at his mother's happiness. She was his everything, his entire world, and there was no one he could love more than her. He knew the hardships she had faced in bringing him up alone, and the respect he had for her was infinite. He would go to any extents to bring and keep the smile on her face.

Prem: Maa main thodi der bahar jaa raha hun.

Leaving his mother in her memory lane, her happy place, he stepped out of his new home to roam the streets and explore his new life. His house was pretty close to the main market, and soon he was walking amongst bright shops and lots of people going about their daily work. it was starting to get crowded since it was late afternoon, which meant that students were on their way back home from school. He would be one of them by tomorrow.

Busy in his own world, admiring the hustle-bustle of the market, Prem was brought out of his reverie by a loud horn. Startled, Prem turned around, to find a young man on a bike glaring at him. He looked around and realized that he was standing in the middle of the road. Granted, most of the road was hogged by the crowd, but he was stood in the dead center of it. Had the young guy not braked, Prem would have been on his way to the hospital by now. What a start to the new chapter of his life.

Prem: Sorry yaar, dhyaan nahi diya kab--

Guy on the bike: Andhe ho kya? Dekh ke nahi chal sakte!?

Prem: Sorry sorry. I know meri galti hai. Mujhe pata hi nahi chala k --

Guy: Sorry? Agar maine brake nahi lagaya hota to tumhari zindagi ka sorry ho jaata. "Sorry" keh raha hai. Ek to poora din vaise bhi kharaab gaya hai, Upar se tumne jitni kasar thi vo bhi poori kar di.

Prem: Arre bhai. Maan liya na meri galti hai. Kabse kehne ki koshish kar raha hun k dhyaan nahi raha. Jail mein daal de! Aur din tera kharaab gaya hai, to bill mujhpe mat phaado. Aur vaise tu bhi to dekh ke chala sakta tha.

Guy: Dhyaan se chalaaya issiliye tu sahi-salaamat hai. Ab niklo mere raaste se. Mujhe jaana hai. Aur marne ka zyaada shaunk ho, to kisi aur tareeke se maro. Doosron ki zindagi mein problems khadi karne ki zarurat nhi hai

Grumbling under his breath at the audacity of the guy, Prem stepped aside, glaring daggers at the back of his head.

Prem: Badtameez aadmi. Pata nahi kahan ka attitude le kar ghoom raha hai.

With his mood ruined by this episode, Prem decided to cut his adventure short and headed back home. He had had his fill for the day, thank you very much.

Sameer was in the worst of moods. He had not felt this frustrated and upset even when he had been accused of stealing the question papers. The guilt of breaking Naina's pure, innocent heart, and then not being able to earn her forgiveness was killing him from the inside. forget earning, he wasn't even able to attempt to ask for it. All because of one dumb fellow. He had made such an effort, of reaching the entrance of her Gali at the same time that she would so that he could steal a moment with her and beg her for her forgiveness. Precision was very important here because that was the last point at which he could actually have a chance of talking to her face-to-face. If she entered her Gali, her neighbours, her family and one million other factors would come to play and she wouldn't even look at him. However, by the time that he reached, she had already gone, as he was so kindly informed by Munna and Pandit, and had even entered her house. he had lost his chance, all because of that idiot who was strolling right in the middle of the road as if it was a park. That guy cost him his chance of talking to Naina! Sameer had not felt such intense hatred for anyone before, let alone a person who he did not even know. Swear to God, if that person was in front of Sameer at the moment, forget bike, Sameer would have parcelled him to the hospital with his bare hands. Thank God, he doesn't have to see that person again, or else that guy wouldn't have survived for long. But now, focusing on more important matters- Naina.

AN: so here it is.. Part 2. Sameer and Prem have met, though they have no clue of their roles in each others' lives. Naina is still faaar away from Sameer, and while it is not Love yet, it is still killing him. Sameer Babu, aage aage dekho.. hota hai kya? ;)

Part 3

Why was he making it so hard for her? The more efforts she was making into forgetting him, the harder he was making it for her to do so. The talking parrot, the phone-calls, the sweater, and standing under her balcony day and night. what did he think of himself? That she will melt and forgive him? Well, he thought wrong. She was not that weak, to be blackmailed into forgiving him. And WHY was he so interested in her forgiveness anyway? He got what he wanted. he won the bet. What was left now?

Torturing herself with this series of thoughts, Naina lay awake until the early hours of the morning. she was not weak, definitely. but that did not mean that she didn't care. deny it as much as she wanted, she still cared that he was outside her house, cold, hungry, and alone. She didn't want to see him, didn't want to be anywhere near him, but could not stop herself from walking out into that balcony to see if he was still there- hoping he wasn't- but still to ensure. Couldn't stop herself from tricking Preeti to let him know that calling the telephone would be of no use since the receiver was not put back properly. Too worried about him, but too hurt to show it to him or to give up and talk to him, Naina lay in her bed hoping that he would just put her out of her misery.

Sameer Maheshwari. standing outside a girl's house, waiting for her glimpse, a chance to talk to her, to earn her forgiveness- it was all new territory, and boy it was a difficult one. A few times, even he thought of giving up. She was not ready to budge- it was no use; she was too stubborn. But his heart was equally stubborn, if not more. Every time that his feet would start walking backwards, his eyes would refuse to leave her balcony. "Just a little bit more,"- this thought would strike his mind each time, and he would stay. Munna and Pandit had tried to convince him, but it was fruitless. And so here he was- at 2 AM, outside her house, sitting underneath a streetlight, wearing the sweater she had so lovingly made for him- the last essence of the warmth she had radiated for him; the last piece of evidence for the love she once felt for him. The warmth, the love that he had lost because of his own foolishness of not realizing what he had, and what he had bet on.

The episode with Arjun which happened a few hours ago replayed in his mind. Arjun's words were sharp, and a little unnecessary, yes, but he didn't want to start another feud. Especially one that would impact his chances of winning Naina back. A fight with her brother would definitely be on his Not-to-do list. God knows what problem Arjun had with Sameer. There was an ill-feeling between Rakesh Sir and Sameer, yes, but Sameer had never directly had any problem with Arjun. Even the thing with Rakesh Sir was solved, somewhat, so why Arjun was reacting was a question mark even in Sameer's mind. But it wasn't a priority to fret over. So he had stayed silent and told Munna-Pandit to do the same. Naina was the only thing on his mind at that time and would remain till he hadn't convinced her. Once she forgave him, he could deal with everything else. "Bas ek baar maan jao Naina... Please?"- chanted Sameer to himself, as he closed his eyes and rested his head back against the streetlamp.

"Uth Jao Prem! School ka time ho raha hai! Pehla din hai tumhaara. Jaldi jaoge to logon se baat karne ka mauka bhi milega" Sandhya called out.

"Utha hua hun maa. Bas ready ho ke aata hun," came Prem's reply. 45 minutes later, Prem was out of the house. Fixing his bag in the carrier of his Bicycle, Prem bid his mother a goodbye and started his journey towards his new school- and a new life. A mere 10 minutes later, he was parking his bicycle in the numerous bike-stands and making his way to the school office to complete any formalities. Collecting his school ID, he was directed towards his class, which he found empty. there were still around 35 minutes before the school began, and not many students were in the classes, though they were starting to pour in through the gates. Prem, after having a tour of the school, went back to the classroom, to find just one person there- a girl- with her back turned towards him, who appeared to be searching for something in her bag.

"Hi," Prem called out, startling her, and causing her to jump.

"oh, I'm so sorry. Main aapko daraana nahi chahta tha." Prem apologised.

"Its okay. Mujhe umeed nahi thi ke itni jaldi koi yahan hoga." the Girl replied.

Prem: "Vaise mera naam Prem hai. Main yahan naya hun. Aaj mera pehla din hai."

Girl: "Hi Prem. Mera naam Naina hai. Aapka humaare school mein swagat hai. Aapko kuch bhi chahiye ho, to mujhse pooch lena."

Naina smiled at him kindly, and Prem smiled back.

Prem: "Vaise Naina, actually, ek cheez hai jo mujhe chahiye."

Naina: "Kya?"

Prem: "Ek Dost. Kya aap mujhse dosti karogi Naina?"

Prem forwarded his palm and Naina's smile dropped a little. Friendship. With a boy. She had just had a very bitter experience with one, shaking her faith in friendship a little. and in boys. Seeing her hesitation, Prem stepped back a little. A friendship between boys and girls was not a very common occurrence in those days. While Prem didn't believe in this gender differentiation, Naina might be uncomfortable with the prospect. Prem's instinct kicked in, and for some reason, instead of protecting himself from the awkward situation that it was on the way of becoming, his instinct was to put Naina at ease.

Prem: Naina, aap chinta mat karo. Main jaanta hun k Ladke-Ladkiyan aksar dost nahi hote. Aur shayad aap uncomfortable ho. agar aapko dosti nahi karni, to koi baat nahi. But trust me, main ek acha insaan hun, aur aapki choice ko respect karta hun- fir vo haan ho ya na- aur aapko bhi. aap ek bahut achi ladki ho, aapne mujhe welcome feel karvaane ki koshish ki, aur iss naate, main aapko ek dost ki nazar se already dekhta hun, fir chahe aap mujhe uss nazar se dekho ya nahi. lekin sirf ek cheez kahunga Naina, ke dosti ek bahut hi pavitra rishta hota hai- izzat ka, sacchai ka aur kadar ka. aur ye rishta kabhi ladka/ladki ya duniya ke mudde pe bhed-bhav nahi karta.

Naina was a little surprised at his words. Though he was unaware of the reason behind it, he had understood her hesitation instantly. And his words, they had a genuineness in them. His voice was making her heart want to trust him, and the worst part was, there was no resistance from her brain. Not all boys are the same. Whatever Sameer did, it shook her faith, on others and on herself. But talking to Prem, she felt like she could trust him. And a part of moving on from Sameer was also to not let him influence her decisions. That was what she was doing then!

Naina: Prem, thank you. Aapko nahi pata, lekin mujhe aapki ye baat sunne ki. Aap sahi keh rahe ho. Dosti jaisi pavitrata to kabhi thukraate nahi. Acha dost ya bure dost- bhagwaan ke diye hote hain. Acha dost saath dete hain, aur bure dost sabak. To haan. Main aapse dosti Karungi.

Forwarding her palm and placing it lightly on Prem's, and for the first time in a few days, a genuine smile appeared on her lips. Prem smiled back at her, happy to have made a friend, and that too, such a nice one. While both stood in the empty classroom, shaking hands and smiling at each other, happy at their new-blooming friendship, they failed to notice the presence of a third person standing at the door. A person who had witnessed the scene that had pierced his heart like a needle-cusion is pierced by needles, a person whose heart that was now starting to break into even smaller pieces than before, a person who could not do anything but feel the pain that threatened to destroy him bit-by-bit, and a person who felt all of these emotions without realising two things- what he was feeling, and why he was feeling that way- Sameer Maheshwari.
