All was well in the region until a tantric (a magician) fell in love with the Bhangarh princess, Ratnavati. Since he knew that the princess would never marry him, he chose to capture the heart of the princess through black magic. One day, he noticed princess' maid buying oil for her in the local market. He successfully put a spell on the oil that was meant to hypnotize the princess as soon as she touched her. Princess had seen him doing this and threw the oil away. The tantric was prosecuted but he cursed the place, wishing all those who dwell this place will die'. And this is what started to happen. Since then, the place is abandoned.
Today, it is the only place in India that government has acknowledged as haunted. And that the locals say "No one has ever returned from this fort who dared to stay here after sunset". The broken walls, the lush green grass and the bricks strewn around might augment the rustic appeal of the place, but once the sun sets you don't know who comes out from behind the tall grass or who taps your shoulder and asks for a glass of blood. Yes, you can yell when this happens; you MIGHT scare the evil.
2. Tunnel No. 33 on Shimla-Kalka Train Route
Tunnel No 33 on the Kalka-Shimla train route is one of the most haunted places in Shimla. Captain Barog, a British engineer, was in charge of building this tunnel but failed to build it. The British fined him and he killed himself out of humiliation. His spirit is rumored to roam in the tunnel and have friendly conversations with those who see him. Locals also claim to have seen a woman screamingly running into the tunnel and then vanishing.
3. Dow Hill at Kurseong in Darjeeling
Dow Hill Girls' Boarding School and Victoria Boys' High School have been famous for ghost sightings. Locals claim to have heard footsteps after the closing hours and seen a headless boy walk into the woods.
4. Brijraj Bhawan Palace, Kota - Rajasthan
It is one of the most haunted royal palaces of Rajasthan. As per the news reports and beliefs, British major Mr. Burton was killed in the palace before the India's independence. His son was also killed along with him. That's why both of them have made this palace as their home.
Both ghosts are not harmful to anyone as per the reports. But reports are also surfaced that, if security guards of the palace sleep during their duty, ghost immediately slaps them. So, it is too much risky to stay in the palace. Thus, the place is included in the list of the most haunted places in India.

D'Souza Chawl is the most haunted place in Mumbai as well as in Maharashtra state. Many claim to see an apparition of a woman, who fell into the well while getting water from the same. But the residents claim that the spirit is harmless as it never has caused anything bad to them or the chawl. But the fear could be lethal when you know that her shadow is following you and might utter your name to ask something.The ghost of this lady also disappears when the sun rises and again appears at midnight. 6.Kuldhara near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan
Known to be a deserted ghost village, Kuldhara is located near Jaisalmer and has been abandoned since the 19th century. It was established in 1291 by Paliwal Brahmins, known for their business acumen and agricultural knowledge. One night in 1825, all the people of Kuldhara and 83 nearby villages vanished all of a sudden.
The mystery of the vanishing villagers is quite intriguing. Though a story talks of Salim Singh, then minister of state, who fell in love with the beautiful daughter of the village chieftain. He threatened the villagers of huge taxes, should they fail to get him married to her. The chief of the village, along with those of the nearby 83 villages, decided to abandon their villages. It is also said that the villagers, before leaving, cursed the village that no one could ever inhabit the land.
7. Dumas Black Sand Beach in Surat
It is believed that the beach was used as a burial ground for long and hence is home to several tortured souls. People have reported hearing whispers of other people talking when they were alone on the beach. But these reports have been given by only a few of them. Rest? Well, they never returned from their midnight stroll on the beach.
8. Vas Villa on St Mark's Road in Bangalore
The Vas Villa was the home to Vas sisters, Doice Vas and Vera Vas - daughters of a famous lawyer. One day, Doice was stabbed to death in her home. She was buried there and Vera moved out. The house is claimed to be haunted by Doice's spirit now. Teams looking for paranormal activities have confirmed the presence of some negative energy in the villa.
9. South Park Cemetery at Park Street in Kolkata
The burial ground possesses old age graves of British soldiers and many others. The first tryst with the mystical incidents of the place occurred when a group of friends visited the place for photographs. All of them felt dizzy and breathless. A group member had an asthma attack, even though he wasn't an asthma patient. There are also photographs from the day with creepy dark shadows.
10. The Lambi Dehar Mines, Mussoorie
Situated on the boundary of Mussoorie, The Lambi Dehar Mines were home to strip mines and lime quarries. A number of workers toiled here and in early 1990s, due to an unfortunate event, 50,000 workers lost their lives. Soon thereafter, locals started experiencing scary occurrences like trucks falling off the mountains and cars going off the road. Consequently, they left their houses that are now believed to have taken over by natural forces. According to a legend, there is also a witch that roams the mountains and can often be heard screaming.
11.Fern Hill Hotel in Ooty
The hotel shot to fame during the shooting of the Bollywood movie - Raaz. Such is the extent of the spookiness of the hotel that it has been shut down completely. Choreographer Saroj Khan and her crew woke up one night on hearing the noise of rearrangement of furniture on the first floor. They tried to contact the reception, but the line was dead. Next morning, to their horror, the receptionist pointed out that there was no first floor in the hotel.
12.The Shaniwarwada Fort, Pune
This is one of the oldest forts in the state of Maharashtra. The ghost of a 13-year-old is said to haunt this fort, especially on full moon nights. According to the tale, Prince Narayan"the heir to the throne of Peshwa Dynasty"was brutally murdered. Locals claim to have heard his ghost cry out to his uncle to save him. Most of tourists visit this place during the sunlight i.e. day time. It is not advisable to enter in the fort during the night.
13.Lohaghat, Uttarakhand
It was an ordinary town on Abott Hill, owned by the founder of this place. He used to live in a bungalow named Abbey', which was converted into a hospital after his demise. In the mid of 1900s, a doctor joined the hospital who earned enormous popularity due to his impeccable ability to predict deaths. Every morning, he would write down the name of patients (along with the accurate timings) who are going to die. He would ask those patients to move to a separate room, named Mukti Kothri, so that the other patients could not be disturbed.
Till date, no one knows whether he used to murder those patients or it was his naturally gifted skill to anticipate. There is nobody to confirm the truth, but the spirits of those dead throng the place and no one dares to go to this area after dark. Locals believe that due to these melancholic spirits, the place never thrives.
14.Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad
Ramoji Film City, one of the biggest film cities in the country, is actually a haunted place. According to witnesses, the spotlights have been seen falling off, light men have been pushed, strange marks have appeared on mirrors, and many crew members have had severe injuries. Females have even experienced their clothes being torn off by a mystical force or being locked in rooms from inside.
15.Kundanbagh Witches' Lair, Hyderabad
The story speaks of a thief who broke into a 2-storey house in Kundanbagh and discovered dead bodies of the 3 owners. Scared as hell, the thief went to the police station to report the case. Forensic reports stated the date of death to be roughly 3 months prior to the break-in. The neighbors, however, claim to have seen the mother and her 2 daughters walking in the balcony and the lighting of candles in the house at midnight, even until a day prior to the discovery of their dead bodies.
16.Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai
Sanjay Gandhi National Park is the only national park with a large protected area in the city. It is located in the Borivali East in Mumbai. People often visit this place as their weekend getaway in Mumbai.
Leopards and other dangerous animals ate many people in the forest. If believed to be true, a phantom hitchhiker spirit is haunted in the national park. Forest Guards are also insisting that it is true. It is also considered as one of the most haunted places in Mumbai city in Maharashtra. It is considered as one of the most haunted places in India.
17.Three Kings Church, Goa
The 3 Kings Church is situated on the hill of the Cansulim village in the South Goa. This church is famous for the feast of the three kings. The celebration is also held on 6th January each year. Three Kings Church is mostly visited by the local people and a few tourists. It is considered as one of the most haunted places in India.According to the local people, this church is haunted. Long time ago, 3 Portuguese kings were living in the state of Goa. They want to gain power at any cost. King Holger Alvunger, one of the kings has invited two other kings in the palace. He poisoned both of them and both died there. After some time, he also committed suicide by consuming poison. This place becomes one of the most haunted places in Goa.
18.Malcha Mahal, Delhi
Malcha Mahal is hunting lodge that dates back to the Tughlaq era. Princess Wilayat Mahal, one of the last descendants of the royal family of Oudh, did not get her estate back after independence. She committed suicide by drinking grounded diamond. Her ghost is said to haunt the royal palace area ever since. Rumors say that those who have attempted to enter the palace without permission never returned alive. The truth behind these rumors is yet to be accounted for, but that doesn't stop this place from being suspected as one of the most haunted places in India.
19.Charleville Mansion, Shimla
Charleville Mansion, a century-old deserted castle, was built in the British Era and was rented in 1913 by the British officer Victor Bayley and his wife. But, little did he know that the house was also home to a poltergeist. When he heard the tale of the poltergeist from a local, he decided to test the authenticity of the haunted tales. So, he locked the room where most of the haunted activities were reported. When he opened the room, to his surprise, he found the room in shatters. Many other stories have been reported by the Bayleys and subsequent residents.
20. Delhi Cantonment Area
Clean and green, Delhi Cantonment area is a great place to visit during the day. But as the night falls, you can be lucky (or unlucky) enough to experience its spooky side. Locals and passersby claim to have seen a woman in a sari asking for a lift and chasing the vehicle at inhuman speeds.
