IKRS 24th October 2015 ep 66 My Take

The creative arts in any culture are the ethos of that nation.A historical recognition that gives an exclusive identity to the peoples. In many faiths across the world music, dance and song are seen as a basic part of their devotion. However some societies and sects can frown upon allowing such acts as daring and un conservative. The episode is about how to arrive at a decent outcome where the finer senses are allowed to flourish.

Indarani takes a decision and enforces  it upon all. As of tomorrow  no more returning to the mela. Either for business or participating in the competition. Viplav and the rest see the competition defunct's the previous strong hold of selling too. None dare challenge  Inderani's decision, and as always  Dulari  backs her completely. it's like Dulari waits for a signal  from Inderani so she can give vent to  the tumult that brews in her deep down, In fact she suggests they return  to Ashram  immediately! where there will be no more temptations to trap them into new ideas. The temptation being Viplav and his hullabloo ideas! , who else?  There is a cold war constantly going on from her side against Viplav. Viplav stops her before she leaves explains, the names can be deleted If they give them a replacement team. Dulari taunts, really and truly it's  all his doing! so he too should collect his stuff. he resists and asks how is  he responsible? and she snub shim , pity he can't see! let her make it clear, none of the Ashram girls will be dancing unashamedly on that stage! Did he get that? she has nothing else to add! and she begins to move. Stand up and be counted! Speak now! or forever hold your piece! Stop a while! Rajlaxmi challenges , she has to say something.  Viplav offers to hold the box dulari carrys. Rajlaxmi  says, why are they  not allowed to take part?if that's the case? then perhaps  they should be kept chained to the Ashram ?why are they even allowed out? She always dreamt of becoming a great dancer. Her parents allowed her to learn dancing but after marriage her in laws forbade her to pursue it. Now  this white colour  restricts her,  robs them of every joy. This competition is a god sent! that's why without out our knowledge  our names turned up in the competition! God wants us to participate, win and alleviate our hardships! argues Rajlaxmi. Viplav supports her vociferously, but then stops  as he may be seen to instigate . But Viplav does add that it takes a lot of guts and confidence to take part in a competition; and if they want too,  then they should be allowed. Dulari, reminds Rajlaxmi,  if Inderani  says so, then all, just need to return back to the Ashram without any further dissension. Dulari is fast becoming known for her draconian mindset, which seems to beat against Viplav's practical approach. They leave ,but Viplav now smiles, as he senses he has started progressive thinking amongst  some widows.

Muffled insurrection against freedom of expression. Back at the Ashram while Dhani paints clay models.Raj laxmi dances  in the silvery light of the moon and Dhani watches her. Suvarna  comes in with tea , and Rajlaxmi pulls her to join in too. Dhani reminds them badi amma  disallowed   participation in the competition and it's doubtful she'll change her mind. Raj laxmi  tells Dhani to ignore them and get on with  what she's doing.. Suddenly the jingle of brass bells sound.. Viplav tip toes down the stairs and  gives them ghungroos, belled anklets  and says , tonight forget ,all boundaries and limitations, just practice, concentrate on winning in mind! and dance in such a way that these ghungroos musical anklets fall in love with your feet! and reform the mindset of those people  who think what you do is wrong!  alongside he  desires to catch Dhani's reaction to the dance and music activity..not forgetting to  buck up the dancers! Too who vow not to let him down. he prompts  their dance with  the back up of table and sitar music.. Dhani..side tracked in her diva painting, reminds him about the level of volume.. which may wake up the rest of the Ashram, bringing an end of their practice..he says he  knows.

This is all about a subtle giving in to  the gentle  cadence of the musical notes.. going with the flow. Viplav watches them how their feet moved to the sound of the sitar, he also looks out for Dhani's reaction too as she watches them while she paints the model too. Suvarna nearly falls on to Viplav as she  rotates around. He shows them a more disciplined twirl. Then he notices Dhani's foot on the floor it taps with the rhythm of the music and sound of the gunghroos. Yet she appears painting her diva holder.. Her upper body too sways very slowly . Viplav  gives an impish smile. The magic of suvarana and Rajlaxmi 's dance  seems to be reaching Dhani too.. Psst! He draws her attention,  if she wants to join them ,than what is she waiting for? he tempts her .she immediately  stops her foot tapping! and gets up abruptly.  Dhani! He calls after her and grabs her arm from the back.. did he say something offensive? her foot tapping  made him  think my be she's interested  in joining Suvarna and Raj laxmi... he'll show her how ,and he grabs both her arms and stretches  them into dance steps.. an unholy act or a helping hand towards a giant leap?  dhaneee! Shouts Dulari from the top of the stairs. she comes leaping down..shamless   girl! and with full force she delivers a forceful slap across  Dhani's face. The slap epitomizes her frustration as a mother at being unable to thwart Viplav's innovations. Viplav dives to one side and is shocked at Dulari's  slap across Dhani's face! what was  she doing Viplav.. explains but he gets yelled upon, he'd better not say a word. she asks Dhani  again what exactly was she doing? what was she doing with him?? it's clear that Dulari is fast losing control over reality.. she now doubts Dhani's chastity...    what was going on? she screamed.  Raj laxmi protests, but is, told you to shut up too by a hysterical Dulari. Then she spots and holds the ghungroos and wants to know where they came from?  they are dancing on the sly  under cover of the night they want to turn this  Ashram into a brothel...and a fit of rage she throws the ghungroos  across the floor.  Viplav  looks deeply distressed and shamefaced.. it's  Viplav! Viplav! every where.. here in the Ashram!  Dhani gets attacked by  scathing words and a rough palm..due to viplav!!

Viplav! Viplav ! here too.. Dashrant is deep in obeisance . Kanak enters interrupts his devotion, he tells her off what has an  volcano has erupted that she forced  to top his  worship. She cries when  a crisis is on the  spread then  the devote has to interrupt and call upon god to listen...Viplav has gone off the rails he is assisting the widows to sell their goods. On top of that he's teaching them to dance as well him. Sternly he I tells her he'll look into the matter and next time think twice of interrupting his worship and next time she should come with a solution to the problem rather than the problem.

Time to explain or say sorry? or become a punching bag.. a severe scene which shows Viplav's patience in handling a bitter hysterical mother. He is called a hypocrite, an instigator, who has  put a spell on her daughter.so much so that Dhani, even speaks his language now. Viplav is emotionally  hurt ,but he still stays focused on his point of view, regarding the exploration and celebration of talents.. Viplav goes to Dulari and stands before her..takes her hand and gives her a glass of  water. Indrani   turns around.. Viplav kneels before her and explains, she mis understands ,he respects all the women in this place, why would he instigate any one,or show them the wrong path. Neither he wishes to anything adverse here. She has to believe him..he went to get their name deleted but the mela organizer rejected   it , what fault is that of mine.then he too thought may be god has given them an golden opportunity.  There's good money in it. She taunts , she knew it with you rich lot everything boils down to money.  No with us poor widows our self- respect is everything for us, and we can't see anything beyond  our self respect.does he think she's blind  she can't see what's up to? She knows that he's the one whose given her buchiya name for the competition. Dhani walks into the door way. Dulari  cries, she knows he'll deny it but since he's come into the Ashram he is doing some cheap joke every so often! So  he can't frighten us , but they won't be frightened.  He is one who is sweet on the outset ,  but as soon as one turns ones face  he stabs the back! Viplav is shocked at her words. ..she continues, does he recognise  that what- ever he  does can cause so much pain to someone else? Her buchiya is a widow ,  she is a widow's mother. How much  she has to bear and hear does he have any idea? No he doesn't and he won't understand either. Gives up Dulari .dhani calls out, maayi  I she saw wih her own eyes he went to get our names crossed off but he refused. Dulari nods at Dhani sarcastically. I heard that one fish spoils the whole pond , seen it today,  nice one child.. Only what you speak is his language. Now they both better listen once and for all they can try both of you to convince me, but they will not make her change her mind. Dhani just cries and runs away. Indarani says. what is she saying?Dulari  disagrees with Inderani.. as it's her who has blinkers on she can see clearly that since Viplav came to the  Ashram he is on a mission to herald in a change! But she will oppose his flow!..so Viplav and all else, begin to see the bitter side of her Dulari that her  anger brings out..  Dulari  puts up resistance against change.. Viplav is THE CHANGE!

The voice  of a devotional  song.. that appeals to the goddess Durga maa..flows through the mouth of Dhani's  voice ,whose own mother  now lashes out in anger against her and  vilplav. Durga goddess ,the mother goddess is invoked for her mercies.. so her own Dulari  mother can see the true meaning of trusting her own child.. the widows sing praises of goddess Ambaa.. calling  for peace..  A man, is pulled into the devotional singing. Viplav shares his happiness, at seeing them in peace, moving in the throes of complete devotion to the goddess Amba, Durga, Gauri. He asks Dulari, will she consider this song and dance too as going against the rules of the ashram? Viplav glorifies the talents that god gives to humans... song and dance is an integral  part of our devotion.. how can it be enclosed  within four wall? or within boundaries! both young and old listen to it, and watch it ,that's why he's pressing, by calling it wrong? turning  away from it?Creation has given us  sound and music ,we should accept it happily.. he gives, faith references of the goddess Swarsati who stands for dance and music, Lord Krishna,Rama with his musical flute, and lord Shiva's dumru ,and tandev... if only they try  just a little to alter the way we think , then we will see  devotion and faith in it...and Viplav leaves.. the widows with the thought of linking  the creative arts as devotional acts rather than  evil acts.. as Dhani looks at him along with the other widows .. wondering if Viplav'talk had any impact on Dulari

Next morning.. he comes down in the courtyard and quietly picks up the big boxes and asks , is no one coming with him  to the mela?no one replies and he says  he'll count till five..after that he'll leave.. 1,2, 3, 4 and a half, 4.45.. 5! fine  they don't have to come. but before he leaves, he wants to remind them, that  Dushera is about good winning the war over evil..and he has full faith that the good within  them.. will not allow  this fear in them in winning.. he is leaving alone he'll sell all the stuff and only then he'll  return. dulari glares at him as he leaves..

A fine episode that appeals to the mood of Navartri  and Dusshera.. there is a battle of wills on screen as well. old age ideas up against new age thoughts which extends and exalts the strengths of faith.. Hamlet53 25.10.15

Precap: against the orange back ground.. the dark silhouette of a woman dances to the song that sings praises of goddess  Durga ..viplav is shocked to see Raj laxmi with a bandaged head.. you?? if you are here who  is that? Raj laxmi replies, Dhani and he says what??..

In the same room/setting in the ashram where i guess viplav helped dhani find her voice, confidence and courage to talk upto phool chand, does he try to reason with her mother to trust her daughter, trust him and re-establish the basic fact of life that it is meant for living not just surviving...
Dont know whether it was intentional or unintentional (some production limitations), it did add some parellells to the narrative...

fabulous one hammie 👏
loved it ❤️

well said 👏...its amazing to see that one thing is integral part of some culture but on other hand , a taboo for others..i m left more shocked coz they approve dance in name of god but not in other way...does the definition of dance, or person's character, values changes in the two different styles?

only thing i differ in is...i feel indraani do back up for dulaari and dulaari is taking the decisions 🤢

Dancing widows and wincing Viplav. Hammie your take is great. It brings out e tension and stubbornness of both Viplav and dulari maa. Both are striking to their positions. Dulari gets nasty when she is scared, upset, or insecure for her buchiyatherfore she gives everyone around her a piece of her mind. Viplav's actions of encouraging the widows to dance is making ripples felt as far as his home. It will be an interesting epi tomorrow, when we see DT in the audience of the dance. Perhaps he is the chief guest and ends up judging the competition and declaring Dhani the winner. If that happens, wonder what his motives might be.

what changes is how its perceived by others..  people wear different hats.. one hat which when worn, brings about religious reverence. a spiritual  devotional experience , exercised  by a  group of peoples  who  think alike.. i.e  songs, hymns which, are accepted not questioned. its  personal faith   that comes together by  others with similar beliefs ..  the other hat is donned for giving vent to our  carnal pleasures listening to raunchy numbers.. dulari believes  all dance gets naughty thoughts from the  audience.. Viplav  tries to focuson.. that dance  becomes a devotion, a spiritual  message,   by the meaning  put forth   by the dancers/ dancer..

only thing i differ in is...i feel indraani do back up for dulaari and dulaari is taking the decisions 🤢

yes dulari  will decide  for dhani, she is the girl 's mother.. badi amma . is seen older and wiser than  dulari  and as such   tends to talk through matters with her.. dhani matters.. like going  to mela.. badi amma tells her to allow dhani.. and dulari  tends to soften.. dulari.. comes across stronger   because she feels  she has a  reason.. a daughter.. to flap about and challenge if she feels she is losing her grip over dhani.. thanks for your  interesting comments roopal  . me going to chk.. your post about dhani.. much love hammie
