JA, Parinneta and lagaan were family films with great music BV had nothing going for it Dark theme, period film with non commercial music , everyone  knew it was going to flop

Not true about Lagaan.

Haven't seen the others.

Mughal-e-Azam is another example. One of the biggest hits ever and it was a period movie.

DBB is Dibakar's interpretation but people expected Saradindu's Byomkesh so they were dissapointed
When Laagan was released no one had a idea that it has cricket, it was ATBB but hit none the less.
Ofcourse Devdas was period movie, the story was set in feudal Bengal
You are correct for RL. The costume and set up was periodic but it was of modern time

sorry but DBB any day over sadakchaap RL ðŸ¤¢

Lagaan was the riskiest film at its time. Aamir was not that big a star and Sunny was much more popular than him. With the exception of hit music, even there Gadar gave it tough competition, there was nothing going for Lagaan. It started slow but built up on WOM and excellent reviews and became the BB of the year. Lagaan showed what a truly well made film and an exceptional lead actor can acheive together.

On a serious note,
I'm not going to blame the fact whether there is a story or not. It's just that public isn't interested in wasting their time over such boring films. They can take a no-story as long as its bright colorful and the music makes them whistle and dance.

This is the truth about majority of audience. and Bombay Velvet overall wasn't appealing at all. Their level of intellect will not pull masses, not now not and not later.

As for Ranbir now, he is no way near being called the next superstar. Besharam was commercial enough, and it rode on him only. Besharam truly showed everyone his status and now BV is an another nail in the coffin. Also he promoted BV less, and his private life with katty more. Not good :) results are here.
