Ranbir Kapoor, one of the top Bollywood stars. Anushka Sharma, a popular actress who's career has come back in form after the historic success of PK and the success of NH10. Karan Johar, one of the biggest director/producers in Bollywood performing in this film as a villain. Anurag Kashyap, a director who appeals to a niche section of the audience, but is absolutely adored by this section as being a brilliant filmmaker. That, is BOMBAY VELVET!

BOMBAY VELVET has been in the news for a looong time now, but mostly for all the wrong reasons! All sorts of controversies surrounding supposed internal dissatisfaction of the product by those involved with the film and whatnot has lead to there being a sort of negativity surrounding the film.

To make matters worse, Ranbir's last two films BESHARAM and ROY (although he technically wasn't considered to be the main lead in this film) garnered huge negativity and both films flopped badly at the box office, despite the two films raking in impressive opening collections as the films went on later to crash at the box office. The bad events didn't stop there: the first trailer of BOMBAY VELVET received a dull response.

Such is Anurag Kashyap's style of filmmaking that BOMBAY VELVET is basically a multiplex film. The film would not attract masses, as the film would be too slow and boring for them. BOMBAY VELVET is a multiplex film, but the film's appeal is restricted even more by the fact that the film appears to be more of a dark, serious type film. Those looking for candy floss, sunshine type of cinema will not be happy with a film like BOMBAY VELVET. Also, although the film has gotten a U/A certificate, the film doesn't seem to be one that would attract the family audience as there is violence in the film and perhaps other aspects that would be more suitable for adult viewing only. Basically, BOMBAY VELVET is for a very, very, niche audience, and that will make it very difficult for the film to recover costs as the cost of the film is over 100 crores. For such a huge cost, appeal towards a much wider section of the audience was needed!

BOMBAY VELVET should take a bigger opening than Ranbir's last film ROY, as Ranbir has the leading male role in BOMBAY VELVET unlike ROY. The audience is aware of Ranbir having the leading male role in BOMBAY VELEVT and therefore, they will come to see the film, especially the youth in the bigger cities/centers of India amongst whom Ranbir seems to have a strong fan following with. However, the opening wouldn't be that much greater than ROY, as ROY had chartbusting music album which BOMBAY VELVET lacks.

The critics reviews of BOMBAY VELVET are strong so far, but in terms of audience WOM (Word of Mouth), the film will be rejected by the masses and the section of the multiplex audience that likes family-friendly, light type films. Only a small section of the multiplex audience will appreciate the film, and that is not enough for the film to recover it's huge costs.

It will be a somewhat similar case as LOOTERA (2013), which had great critic reviews and strong appreciation from a smaller section of the audience and failed at the box office due to serious content of the film and lack of appeal for a major section of the section.

My Box Office Predictions for BOMBAY VELVET
Opening Day: 12 crores net
Opening Weekend: 35 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 70 crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Flop

You might jus be right but really want it to work for Ranbir more than anyone as he is the reason this film has become a reality.

The music by ankit tiwari is authentic but is not good enough for a big budget film like this...they shud have done something similar to Veer Zaara...taken old melodies n turned them into songs ppl wud like now. A few popular songs can take a movie to another level..
