While you were watching the #IPLFinal, I watched #Piku again, enjoyed it again. Nice to see a packed hall in Week 3 for a film of this sort.
Piku did well it its third weekend grossing around 6.50 crore nett and taking its business to 69 crore nett apprx. The film maintained well despite Tanu Weds Manu Returns scoring very at the box office. The collections are the highest for the third weekend. They are almost similar to the the third week of Baby which had the previous highest third weekend.
The film looks on course for an 80 crore nett total and maybe even a chance to go past the 81 crore nett plus of Baby though has little chance of beating highest grosser so far this year Gabbar Is Back.
The third of the film should be able to cross 10 crore nett which would mean business of around 73 crore nett in three weeks. The business in Mumbai will hit 25 crore nett at the end of week three.
Bombay Velvet continued its disastrous run on a limited number of screens in second weekend grossing around 50-60 lakhs nett.
Piku is moving towards the 100 crore mark. And while it's as much her film as Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan's, Deepika Padukone has benefitted most from the film's success. First, because she plays the title role; secondly, she has proved that she doesn't need a top hero in the film to bring in the audiences and thirdly, because she is becoming a hit machine. The luck factor in the industry has always been the biggest draw for a heroine and with Dips hitting every film for a six, she is soaring high, with no competition in sight.
Numbers do the talking
The movie proved to be a great investment, considering its total cost was just around 32 crores. Post its second weekend, worldwide collections have now crossed the 75 crore mark. The movie is expected to cross the much-coveted 100 crore mark in the next 10 days
Picture abhi baaki hai
The celebrations may have begun, but they are not going to end anytime soon. After a great run at desi and foreign markets, the movie will now step into non-traditional markets like Japan, Korea, and China among others. This is part of a staggered release strategy. Looks like DP will have to wait a bit for the total figures to come in before planning a bash.
Many firsts for Piku
The movie is not only a winning accolades and moolah, it's also a great booster for those who are a part of it. While Amitabh Bachchan's status in Bollywood is legendary, this is among his biggest hits in nearly a decade. While for Irrfan, who has always been loved by the critics, this is the biggest career mainstream hit. Not just that, this is the only film in the history of Indian movie where the movie collection doubled over night. Piku opened its account at the box office with 5 crore, on Sunday the cash registers stood at one 11.2 crore. It's a record in the industry.
Trade speak
Both Piku and Deepika are bound to reap the benefits of the movie. Says Amul Mohan, Editor, Super Cinema, "The movie had everything going for it. Apart from Deepika, there were two great actors. It is a feel-good kind of a film, that made an impact on the audience right from day one. It was believed that Dum Lagaa Ke Haisha would be the Queen of this year, but it never lived up to expectations. Piku, on the other hand, has done extremely well." It also gave competition to Bombay Velvet, which was mounted on a massive canvas. As for Deepika, he says, "She hasn't seen a low, and this film has only taken her higher. It will further cement her place in the film industry and at the box office."
Piku had a fantastic first-weekend on desi shores with '25 crores.
On the international front, too, it has been the highest opener this year.
The overseas collections have crossed 3 million USD, which is the highest that a movie with a female protagonist has collected.
Leading ladies have been complaining about pay discrimination in the industry for a long time, but the scene appears to have changed now.
According to a Deccan Chronicle source, Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut have asked their managers to increase their fee. From now on, the actresses will quote their amount and if rumours are to be believed, the producers are fine with it.
This change came after "Piku" roared at the box office and "Tanu Weds Manu Returns" mesmerised viewers this weekend.
On it's 13th day, the Shoojit Sircar directorial entered the 100-crore club (worldwide) and the domestic figure stands at 68.97 cr. Meanwhile, Aanand L Rai's rom-com made 21.85 crore in just two days, stated a Koimoi report.
"Both Piku and TWMR have done fantastic business at the box office without the backing of male lead actors. It shows a changing dynamic of the industry. Kangana and Deepika are the only two actresses today who can quote the sum they want and decide which filmmaker they want to work with. It also goes on to show that you don't necessarily need top banners to back you if you have a strong story and female lead," a source close to Kangana further elaborated.
Interestingly, this move could mean a potential threat to the young crop of actors.
However, B-Town's ladies are paid in crores for their contribution to Hindi cinema and beyond. According to a Times of India report, Katrina charges roughly 7 crore as endorsement fee. Last year, it was reported that Kareena Kapoor Khan made a whopping 8 crore from "Heroine", which failed at the box office.
Priyanka Chopra, who is now juggling her career at two fronts, one at home and the other overseas, was paid 25 crore for upcoming TV series "Quantico". Since there has been no official confirmation on the payment yet, it can be counted as a speculation.#Piku Overseas total: $ 5.36 million [ 34.09 cr].
