#Piku In which @writeonj writes a lovely little film out of our humdrum lives. Lots that's so so good but ultimately she owns the film

The ApunKaChoice movie review of 'Piku'. An ageing Bengali man whose life revolves around his toilet rituals. A daughter oscillating between her career and her chronically constipated father. A reluctant driver who gets to view up-close with intrigue and amazement the constant tug and slack of motion and emotions, and the never ending quibbling between the father-daughter duo. With these principal characters, director Shoojit Sircar and writer Juhi Chaturvedi weave a heart-winning tale of familial caring, selfishness, geriatric eccentricities, and love.

Piku is a gentle cruise through a multitude of emotions. It's a film that makes you laugh and cry. But never does it achieve that result through a torrent of rumbustious humour or soggy melodrama. It does so with a gentle nudge. Director Shoojit Sircar is clearly a man of moderation.

The film tells the story of Bhashkor (Amitabh Bachchan), a hypochondriac obsessed with his bowel movements. His daughter Piku (Deepika Padukone) is a liberated woman with a promising career and casual sex life. She obviously can't abandon her father, but feels her life intruded at every step by him and his obsession with constipation. Things set in motion when Bhashkor wants to be driven from Delhi to Kolkata via road. Rana Chaudhary (Irrfan Khan), a failed engineer, reluctantly agrees to drive them across the country but has no clue what he's getting into.

'Piku' Trailer: Deepika, Amitabh, Irrfan in a tale of motion' and emotion'

'Piku' is a film that revels in the ordinariness of life. The movie is relatable on many levels thanks to the slice-of-life drama that unfolds between the father, daughter and the driver trio. There is a dichotomy in every character. The daughter is an independent woman, but is tethered to her meddling father. The father is selfish and blunt yet he has a soft side for his daughter which he tries not to show often. The driver is both drawn towards and repulsed by the duo, but willy-nilly caught in their world. A beautiful understated love story plays out between Piku and Rana that will make your heart skip a beat.

Apart from Juhi Chaturvedi's script and Shoojit Sircar's meticulous direction, 'Piku' is propelled by wonderful performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan.

Amitabh Bachchan gets the Bengali diction (with drawling and over-rounded vowels) right but it's the convincing senility and irritability he lends to the character that makes Bhashkor believable and likeable despite his boorishness. Deepika Padukone makes the grade yet again with a well nuanced performance, flickering from one expression to another with ease. Irrfan Khan comes up with a performance that looks utterly effortless and totally genuine.

On the sidelines, Moushumi Chatterjee (as Bhashkor's outspoken sister-in-law) and Jisshu Sengupta (as Piku's business companion) chip in well.

'Piku' is a technically sound movie, with gorgeous cinematography, melodious songs, and crisp yet unhurried editing. Shoojit Sircar has an eye and ear for detail, but doesn't let his punctiliousness muffle the breezy drama that plays out on screen.

Here's a movie that you must watch with your parents. It may touch and eventually change just a little something inside all of you.

Piku fares well

The week beginning today sees the release of two films - Shoojit Sircar's family drama Piku and the comedy Kuch Kuch Locha Hai. It also marks the end of the first week of Gabbar Is Back in the theatres.

The Deepika Padukone starrer Piku has opened to glowing reviews and good occupancies. Going strong in the metros like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, the film has registered opening numbers of 50%. And judging from the excellent word of mouth the film is garnering, it may do business worth Rs 6 crore at the end of the first day, which will be very good.

Sunny Leone starrer Kuch Kuch Locha Hai, on the other hand, has opened to poor reviews and faces tough competition from Piku. The film might find it a challenge to collect even Rs 2 crore by the end of day one.

Meanwhile, Gabbar Is Back has had a good run in its first week at the box office. After collecting almost Rs 40 crore in its first weekend, the film dropped only by 40% on Monday, notching Rs 6.75 crore. Gabbar Is Back collected Rs 5 crore on Tuesday, Rs 4.5 crore on Wednesday and Rs 4.2 crore on Thursday.

The Akshay Kumar starrer has collected Rs 59.86 crore domestically. While the film lost a portion of its business to the Marathi film Timepass 2, it can hope to have a decent second week even in the presence of a competitive release like Piku.
