Detailed analysis
Sonam Kapoor is trying to do female centric films one after another. Her earlier such outings 'Khoobsurat' and 'Aisha' were mixed bag.
Film is inspired from real life events where a con girl marries simpleton boys and then vanishes with their belongings next morning. One punjabi and one marathi film were made on same subject in past with minimum success. This time Arbaaz Khan set out to produce a film on same plot. Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) is con girl and her gang consists of Manoj Joshi who acts as father, Zeena Bhatia acts as mother, Zeeshan acts as brother but he actually has feelings for Dolly. Dolly cheats a Haryanavi guy Sonu (Rajkumar Rao) whose father (Rajesh Sharma) is also a guy looking out for women all the time.
Then Dolly cheats a dozen guys which is shown as montage during a song.
Then she tries to cheat Manoj (Varun Sharma) but his mother (Archana Puran Singh) refuses this marriage. In order to take revenge Dolly successfully gets married to Manoj but then same night Sonu arrives at the wedding of Manoj and Dolly. After this interval point, how film takes turns and twists forms the rest of the story. Robin Singh (Pulkit Samrat) is after Dolly but we find out in the end that he was the first love of Dolly and main reason behind Dolly's present state.
Performance wise Sonam Kapoor excels once again despite half baked script. She proves her worth in women centric film again. Rajkumar Rao is extraordinary and evokes laughter with his dialogue delivery. Varun Sharma is good, Rajesh Sharma is decent and Brijesh Kala surprises once again. Zeeshan, Manoj Joshi and Zeena Bhatia are good too. Pulkit Samrat is irritating as he tries to ape Salman Khan all the time. Archana Puran Singh overacts. Saif Ali Khan looks dashing in cameo.Film has couple of good songs but none of those are chartbuster. Editing is crisp and cinematography is average. Background score is pathetic. Story was good but poor dialogues and screenplay spoil the game. Art department and costume department are average.
Director Abhishek Dogra failed to make impression despite such a good actors at his disposal and poor screenplay especially in 2nd half sinks the film.
Film will release tomorrow and will get 1000 screens which will enough for such film.Film will find it tough at box office as there is so much competition in form of 'Baby'. And such films do find audience in smaller centers but will they turn up to watch this one over a gritty thriller is not a tough question to answer.
http://www.boxofficecapsule.com/review/Dolly-Ki-Doli-252Star cast: Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Manoj Joshi, Archana Purana Singh and Saif Ali Khan (in a cameo)
Director: Abhishek Dogra
Producer: Arbaaz Khan Productions
Claps for: Songs, Sonam Kapoor and her costumes
Slaps for: Predictable content
Popcorn Refill: During the interval
Story: Dolly Ki Doli' is the story of a girl, Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) who fakes marriages in an original style and runs away stealing all the precious belongings of the groom and his family. The problem starts when she cons Sonu (Rajkummar Rao) and Manjot Singh (Varun Sharma) and the case is given to Robin Singh (Pulkit Samrat) to get hold of her and the gang. Whether Robin, Sonu and Manjot succeed in catching Dolly forms the crux of the story.
Performances: Sonam Kapoor steals the show as the 'looteri dulhan'. She bowls you over with her innocent looks and charm. Rajkummar Rao, though delivers a brilliant performance, falls short in making us laugh. On the other hand, Varun Sharma manages to give us few giggles. He does his part nicely and is supported well by Archana Puran Singh, who plays his mother. Pulkit Samrat doesn't impress as Robin Singh. It's high time he starts being original and doesn't copy Salman Khan. Saif Ali Khan looks royal in his cameo.
Direction: Abhishek Dogra's debut film is just a one time watch and falls flat. The film has a nice plot but fails to engage the audience. He could have done a better job.
Combo on offer: A combo of 'Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl' and 'Daawat-E-Ishq'.
Final Verdict: We give the film mild Slaps for being predictable and dull!

DIRECTOR: Abhishek Dogra
STARRING: Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma
RATING: 2.5 Stars
Dolly Ki Doli fairly entertains in the first half but like most Hindi films suffers from an extremely underwhelming second half that it made Kiran-Kejriwal battle in Delhi look far more entertaining. Let's dissect the first half first, which is like the trailer of the film on a loop.
There are two ways of looking at the first half.
First, I-have-left-my-brains-behind-way.
Second, I-am-so-pesudo-intellectual-that-I-will-even-intellectualise-a-film-like-Saajan-Chale-Sasural-way.
Dolly Ki Doli is a film about a plundering bride (Wow, a con woman. How maverick!). She even has a fake family to con potential grooms. (Amazing yaar, the writers have really thought it through!!) But she neither consummates her marriage nor does she even get kissed by any man she gets married to. (Bhartiya naari zindabaad!)
Now let's just screw it intellectually. Dolly Ki Doli is about a plundering bride, who loots potential grooms, even gets married to them in grand weddings, but funnily never gets captured on anyone's camera. Dude, we are a smart phone generation, that even documents the colour' of water' in a restaurant. To show no one taking pictures of a gorgeous bride like Dolly is a plot loophole that will make Karishma Tanna-Upen Patel love affair on Bigg Boss Oscar-worthy. Dolly gets married to a bunch of men yet never gets laid. (You see there is a thin line between sati Savitri and s**tty Savitri, and we prefer our heroines to be the former!) As long as they are not kissing, they can do anything --- con innocent people, break their hearts, even loot them bankrupt and we will all find it all Hahaha, so funny'. But the moment they kiss, sati becomes s**tty and Savitri ain't fun anymore!!
Despite these gaping holes and stereotypes, the first half of the movie is well paced, fun and even funny. It's the second half when the writers start justifying the badass Dolly that it all becomes so boring. She became a con woman because her boyfriend dumped her. Awww, that's so sad!! And SO FRIGGING DUMB!! It reminded me of My husband made me a prostitute' video. It really is as simple in our country.
Drunk husbands=Coma=wh**e-wives. Cheating Boyfriends=Looteri Dulhan.
Despite a disappointing second half, the movie packs a cocker of performances, especially by Archana Puran Singh and Varun Sharma.
Varun-bhai-baat-maan-le-bhai- Sharma plays Manoj Singh Chadhdha, a typical Delhi boy, high on hormones and low on logic. Though he is repeating his Fukrey Choocha act yet he gets every nuance of a horny uncouth boy to the T. Archana Puran Singh does a stellar job of playing Manoj's Punjabi mother. Her expressions, her dialogue delivery, even her slight overacting is a major source of fun and laughter in the movie.
Rajkummar-bahut-ho-gaya-serious-cinema-Rao plays the estranged lover who looks genuinely hurt and endearingly Haryanvi. It's the Haryanvi accent that differentiates a fabulous actor like Rajkummar from an absolute amateur like Pulkit-wannabe-Salman-Khan-Samrat.
Sonam-like-you-know-what-I-mean- Kapoor plays the titular role. She continues to showcase her awesome talent of flashing that radiant smile, those gorgeous clothes and dialogues that are screamed but never felt. I will take this moment to remind her of one of her quotes: "Loud acting is considered like...bol diya yaar, maine kar diya yaar...this is not acting, hello." Yeah Sonam, copy THAT! If you know what I mean!
Dolly Ki Doli could have been spunkier, funkier and all things better. Watch it only for Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma and Archana Puran Singh.
