THE LIGHT YOU SEEK

Randhir was in his favorite pub after a stresfull day at work, he was sitting here since hours and hadn't had his fill yet.It was the pubs closing time but randhir was not ready to leave yet. The bartender tried to reason with him but he wouldn't hear any of it. That's when the manager had to step out to manage the ruckus he was making.

Despite the drunken frantic state that Randhir was in, everything fell silent the moment his eyes fell on the manager. The black orbs met the sparkling silver ones under the dimly lit pub lighting, resulting in an instant connection. Randhir was transported to another dimension. He'd never seen such a beauty, especially those magical eyes. They did wonders to him.

"What is the problem?" she asked Randhir, breaking the eye lock masking her irritation with sugar coated words perfectly.

He did not respond and kept looking at her. Her patience knew no bound.

"Hello! I'm asking you something." She banged on the bar counter getting him out of his reverie.

The bartenders told her it was getting late and he wasn't leaving. Looking at how unresponsive he was she caught hold of his hand and escorted him out of the pub signaling the workers to close up. Randhir silently followed.

She turned to leave when she felt his hand on her own.

"Will you spend tonight with me? I will give you whatever you want in return" His voice was almost pleading.

Before she knew it her hand was raised across to deliver a tight slap to him but he caught it mid way.

Randhir saw her struggling, a range of emotions flashed through her eyes.

"Listen mister, there is a brothel on the next alley you will get many takers for your anything there who will be ready to spend many nights with you. I am not one of them and if you are thinking of trying something let me tell you I have a pepper spray in my left pocket and a knife in my right, I know how to use both. Also I have an excellent aim for the right spot" She said calm and poised sure of herself.

Randhir suddenly started laughing letting go of her. For the first time in Randhir singh shekhawat's life, a girl had the audacity to talk to him in such manner. She had managed to make him feel intimidated for a moment and he had to top that. He had to win over her and win her over. Randhir singh shekhawat never lost especially to a girl he took sadistic pleasure in leading girls on then rejecting them just to prove how he was superior to the entire human race.

"Look" he said flashing his business card at her trying to show her who he was.

"I don't care if you are the king of England. I don't want anything to do with a self conceited arrogant jerk like you"

"Listen I promise I won't even touch you not even lay a finger on you. If I try something you are free to use all your expert techniques of pepper sprays and knives on me. I just want company for the night."

"Why me? Leave me alone will you. I am not the type of girl who can be arm candy of a filthy rich guy"

"Exactly! You're not my type at all and I love to experience new things. Just plain old school acquaintance? You decide where we go" He asked holding his hand out.

Normally sanyukta would have pulled out both her pepper spray and knife by now but this guy was different. There was a hint of sadness in his eyes. They were telling her how those dark black orbs needed her grey orbs which lit them up. She finally gave in not for his name or his company but for those eyes which had hypnotized her for the first time ever.

Sanyukta caught his hand with her own accepting his plea and took him to her place. Randhir just smiled and followed her lead confused at himself about the reason for his happiness as he slowly jumped the parapet wall of the abandoned apartment building and climbed up through the fire escape alongside her.

As they reached the terrace sanyukta's eyes lit up she seated herself on the water tank and randhir went on to occupy the place next to her and took in the breath-taking view before him. The building overlooked the whole goddamn city and all the houses with lights looked like tiny multi-colored stars which were infinite in number for a while randhir just sat admiring the view in all his years he had never seen anything so beautiful. For the whole night they just sat in silence looking into nothingness. This was the first time sanyukta had bought someone to her secret place and to her surprise sanyukta liked it. As the first light of dawn crept through the sky sanyukta and randhir tip toed out of the building. Randhir took out a golden colored medal from his wallet and handed it to her.

"Tonight was the most alive I felt in forever. As I promised you I would give you something in return I am giving you my most special thing. This is the achiever of the university medal I got when I completed my masters as the top student. The high it gave me changed my life. I've been on the top ever since. And what I felt tonight trumped that feeling. So I want you to have this as a reminder of it. Please"

Sanyukta silently placed it into her bag acknowledging her acceptance with a smile after which randhir walked away as both went on their own separate ways. Sanyukta was touched to say the least she didn't know if she would ever see him again. So it was pleasant surprise for her when a month later a pathetic looking randhir showed up at the bar much to sanyuktas surprise.

This time when he asked her to accompany him she didn't put up a fight and accepted without much ado. As days went by this became a routine affair with randhir and sanyukta and their rendezvous escapades. They seldom spoke during these stolen moments silence was their constant partner. It felt so perfect with each other in those moments that they didn't want to ruin the moment with words.

--6 months later--

"I love you" sanyukta chirped to randhir a sheepish smile attached to her face.

Randhir was silent.

They were in his cabin where she had come to meet him. Randhir had drew up all the blinds and darkened the entire room to conceal them from view of his staff. Her shining eyes were the only source of light in the dark room while his eyes were darker than ever.

"I said I love you" she repeated decreasing the distance between them catching hold of his collar.

He jerked her away.

"I thought you were different. Should have known when you said yes to spending a night with a stranger seeing his business card. Sad you turned out to be a gold digger too." He spat.

"What do you even know about me other than my name and bank balance to love me?"

"Love isn't about your past but future. I love you not your history. I can do anything for you that is love. I am not interested in your money I care the least for it"

"Anything?" he asked coldly moving closer to her sliding her dupatta off her pushing her onto the sofa while he all but pounced on her. As he decreased the distance between her lips and his she just sat there frozen. He captured her lips with his. There was no passion or love only anguish. When he finally let go of her lips he had an even more disgusted expression on him.

"The lows some people can stoop to for money. Didn't I clearly mention it was a no strings attached acquaintance" He made an irritated face "You turned out to be one of those girls didn't you who leap at any chance they get to floor a rich guy. I don't ever want to see your face again. Don't cross my path or try to contact me. I don't want anything to do with cheap girls like you"

Sanyukta slapped him. Once..twice...thrice... he didn't stop her. When she finally had her hearts fill she walked out of the cabin. The last words of hers being

"A man like you isn't capable or deserving of love. I wish you had never been born or died before I met you. I regret the moment you stepped into my life"

As he watched her walk away a sad smile crept onto his lips as he caressed them with his fingers.

-------------

-5 years later-

A letter was delivered to the doorstep of sanyukta agarwal. It had the name randhir singh shekhawat on it. As she caught hold of it she was going through a euphoria of emotions why was he reaching out to her now she finally opened the letter after a lot of internal debate.

I doubt if you even remember me but now as I am counting my last days I can't keep this from you anymore I have to come clean for the sake of my conscious and my heart. Sanyukta I don't know about love because it is too common a word these days what I feel for you could never be so generalized, you were my grounding factor my anchor you helped me sail through the worst and I will always be thankful to you for that. Thank you so much for accompanying me the first night that was when I knew I had only a limited number of years left thanks to my excessive alchohol consumption, maybe I might have died internally on the very same day if I hadn't found you. You have no idea how badly I had to control myself not to come running after you every day I lasted a month but I couldn't go further I needed you to drive away the darkness, your smile your eyes they illuminated my dark life .You will always be the most cherished part of my life. How I wish I was good enough for you but I never can be. I have damaged myself beyond repair with my alchohol and my flamboyant ways. I couldn't bring you into my life with my degrading condition by the day I had to push you away for your own good I hope you understand me and will be able to forgive me some day in your life. By now you might be happy with some guy you deserve having a family which gives you lots of happiness atleast I hope so though it breaks my heart to even imagine it.

Randhir.

Sanyukta was in tears by the time she came to the end of the letter. She clutched the thread adorning her neck and cried her heart out for both their fate which had bought them together only to separate them again.

--------------------

Randhir was seated on the tank of the terrace of their secret place it was five years since he had come here. But today her memories were too painful to bear and he had come here to find solace.

"Will you spend tonight with me? I will give you whatever you want in return" Her voice reverberated in the silence. Randhir didn't need to turn to know it was sanyukta. But when he did the sight that greeted him was something he couldn't have imagined. She was standing in front of him with the medal he gave her in her neck clutching it in one hand tears streaming from her eyes. There was no mangalsutra or wedding ring. She hadn't gotten married.!! He couldn't frame the right words at the realization. Tears of happiness started streaming from his eyes.

"Listen miss you might find many takers of your anything in some brothel. I am not that kind of a guy..."

The rest of his words were ushered into silence as she leaped onto him and captured him into a bone crushing hug.

"What?" she asked.

"Cirrhosis"

"there is always a cure"

"not always"

"Why?"

"Alcohol. I wish I hadn't. I wish we could have had the happily ever after. But..."

"how long"

"weeks..days..hours maybe..you never know when my liver might give up"

And then there was nothing left to be spoken complete silence filled the air as they lay on the tank under the star lit sky in each other's arms. Just like always.

-------

Days later when maintenance workers came to clean the building for renovation, they found a guy and a girl lying in each other's arms. There was a bottle of poison lying next to the girl fearing the worst when they neared the couple the workers found that both of the guy and the girl were dead.

With a quote engraved on the wall of the tank.

People think only darkness is in need of light. But light has its importance only because darkness exists. No more can light exist without darkness. And now light and darkness are together in a happier place.

This was so beautiful!

I loved it, start to end. The ending was very unpredictable though, and I guess that made reading this more of a treat. To put it in poetic terms: The kind of simplicity that emits elegance. I loved this! :)

Zoya!!
Your one shot is simply exhilirating..
Its like dew drops (your work ) embellishing cannabis(sandhir)...such is the serene beauty of this work...
That quest for undying and unfathomable emotions just cant be overlooked...It has taken sandhir to an all new level,,separation is also an integral part of love...
How selfless you can be for the one you are devoted to!!!
Can there be a better plot,,nope!!!!
