He can't risk losing to a strong contender. That would be a huge image dent. Why take risks at this stage?

Perhaps he is contesting from Varanasi to kill 2 birds from one stone:

1) Varanasi is a holy city of Hindus who will fall for his pro hindutva image

2) To make inroads into a greater pie of the UP electorate which is the largest in the country and sends the maximum number of MPs to LS. His campaigning in a UP constituency would swing the tide in favor of BJP.

AAP only make nonsense

Due to AAP ...BJP will not get high numbers of seats

And so Congress will be in benefit

And no one will get 272

so my request , not to vote AAP & See It's working system & vote in 2019 for AAP But this time only MODI

A country doesn't only need a boosting economy, we need someone who has a good vision, not corrupt and knows how to implement our laws.. that's equally important. I mean, our economy is one of the fastest growing in the world under Congress' governance.. yet most citizens nowadays dislike Congress, and deservingly so because our middle class isn't really benefiting much.

Besides, Congress leaders themselves came to him.. it's not like he went to them saying we should govern together.

btw. I am not saying AAP is perfect, they're just a lot better than BJP/Congress and certainly deserve a chance.

@bold: Exactly. And why contest from any other place where he will gain so little politically?

Option 2 seems the most likely. Option 1 is an added bonus which he's making sure he capitalises on. UP has long been known to be the state that makes/breaks. I don't think it would make much difference if Manohar Joshi or Modi would contest from there. The only reason Modi chooses to do so is because him contesting there has the ability to create this much talked about Modi wave across the state and then BJP can possibly hope to gain more seats. The current early prediction is at 40 (the halfway mark), if he can boost their numbers, the odds will be in his favour.

no, because it is in the eastern UP area where bjp is weak .. they can get 50 instead of 40. for a northwest party like the bjp, even 10 extra seats is important.

I am not surprised with Modi picking Varanasi for his elections. More UP presence , religion card and proximity to Bihar ( The bhojpuri belt), that makes it a decent shot for BJP to win double digits in UP .

I am very amused , how senior leaders across all the parties are heckling for safe seats. Rajnath,PC etc. The insecurities are out in open.

@Mr A - I asked you somewhere else too, ur thoughts on BJP-Shiv Sena alliance . Also recently too many senior party leaders like Sushma and Jaitley have openly expressed their dismay at ticket distribution . How do you read that?

AAP - Final words, election time - every party is lying and picking a hyperbolic narrative. It would be too naive to believe anyone's narrative right now.
