Swatswastika Mukherjee's character in DBB inspired by Devika Rani ?

Swatswastika Mukherjee who will be seen playing the role of Anguri Devi has been reportedly said to be inspired by yesteryear actress Devika Rani

Swatswastika Mukherjee who will be seen playing the role of Anguri Devi has been reportedly said to be inspired by yesteryear actress Devika Rani. Devika Rani was a very established actress of the 1940's. She was known to be a very bold actress becoming the 1st woman to kiss on Indian screen, bold-brazen-Superstar fashionista of her times.

The teaser of the film which got immense appreciation showed Swatswastika's character in a very bold and sensuous avatar. Consider the film is set in the 1940's a lot of people have drawn resemblance in her character and Devika Rani.

But Dibakar Banerjee shared that the role is inspired by the very famous double agent Mata Hari. Mata Hari was a Frisian exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy and executed by firing squad in France under charges of espionage for Germany during World War I.

The nuances of Swatswastika's character have been crafted around Mata Hari to give an edge to her role at the same time being glamorous.

Dibakar shares, "Not Devika Rani at all. But a combination of Mata Hari and a famous character created by Saradindu Banerjee himself. A deadly double agent and a famous and notorious fashion icon who defined the taste and scandals of her generation. Anguri loves to provoke. And get your secret when you're busy looking at her, her clothes, or her without the clothes."

^^Maybe it's an established fact at the beginning of the film itself/introduction of her character itself, and not something we will discover as the story progresses, that's why? Edited by nikitagmc - 9 years ago

More about the music of DBB:

Delhi Band "Joint Family" for Detective Byomkesh Bakshi

The track which has been used in the teaser of Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is called Life's a Bitch which is composed by a popular five piece nu-metal band from New Delhi, Joint Family.

The intriguing teaser trailer ofDibakar Banerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshi which got launched last week has garnered a lot of appreciation and gathered great excitement.

Apart from the teaser being captivating, the music of the song has got a lot of attention. The song is a key element in the teaser of the film. Everyone who heard the song kept thinking that the song belongs to a band from abroad or the style was close to that of Vishal-Shekhar. Dibakar kept the curiosity high by not talking about who the song belonged to. Social media has been abuzz where everyone has been trying to guess who the singer for the song is.

The track which has been used in the teaser is called Life's a Bitch which is composed by a popular five piece nu-metal band from New Delhi, Joint Family. The Delhi based band will also be converting this song into Hindi.

The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput for the title role and Swastika Mukherjee who will be seen playing the role of Anguri.

Byomkesh Bakshy is the biggest and the most famous detective character on the India Television. This is the first time a movie will be made on him. The film is being directed byDibakar Banerjee and will be produced by YRF and Dibakar Banerjee Productions.

Dibakar said, "Its funny how a lot of people thought we have taken some firang band ka track for the teaser. I saw a hilarious You Tube comment that moaned how I too, like some other directors, had become a copycat and stolen some music off the net!

Joint Family, like Byomkesh - is a pure desi talent from Delhi that's been putting the Indie nu metal scene on fire since 2007/8. Their kickass track Life's a Bitch features in the Byomkesh teaser and will feature in the film as an important track. I guess when something truly sensational and world class breaks through - we are a bit reluctant to accept that it's home-grown and genuine.

And this is just the beginning. A whole bag of raw Indian Indie music talent will feature in the soundtrack of Byomkesh Bakshy and we will keep unveiling Desi Indie bands that deserve a place in the world stage!"

*****************

So the music in the teaser will be part of the movie also. I am guessing that the tune which plays in the background when Byomkesh stares at Kolkata in the darkness will be his signature background score.

What's the truth behind 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy' star Swastika Mukherjee's shoplifting act?

Tuesday, 11 November 2014 - 6:05am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA
Subhash K Jha

Was Swastika Mukherjee's shoplifting act genuinely method acting or a publicity gimmick?

Swastika Mukherjee, till recently unknown in Hindi cinema, has ensured she is a recognisable name in Mumbai before her first Hindi film Dibakar Bannerjee'sDetective Bhyomkesh Bakshy with Sushant Singh Rajput hits the screen.

Recently she was in news for shopliftingin Singapore. However, the Bong girl said that she was only indulging in a spot of method acting. She said that she was practising to be a spy by stealing jewellery in a Singapore shop.

But not everyone is ready to believe that. An actress who has worked with Sushant rubbishes this claim as "utter hogwash". "What is being suggested here? That she needs to steal to prove herself a spy? What would she do if she had to play a rape victim?" she asks.

A Bengali co-star of hers thinks Swastika "planned and orchestrated" the shoplifting scandal in Singapore to coincide with her debut in Bollywood. Says the co-star, "She is very clear in her head that she wants to be the the next Sharmila Tagore and Bipasha Basu combined. She realised Detective Bhyomkesh was Sushant's film through and through. She wanted her own portion of attention. She got it when the swiped ear-rings made news all across India."

A senior Bengali actress who was herself quite notorious in her times quips, "Forget shoplifting, Swastika would lift the entire shop to get attention."

The men in her life
Swastika has made news from the time she entered the Bengali film industry in Hemanter Pakhi. That's when she first met Parambrata Chatterjee. During the shooting of Brake Fail, she fell in love with Parmbrata (Vidya Balan's silent admirer in Kahaani). In spite of the fact that she was married to singer Pramit Sen, Swastika painted Kolkata purple with Parambrata. The tumultuous affair ended suddenly when Swastika's husband filed a case against Parambrata for criminal adultery. The actor called off the relationship through an email written to the actress.

Swastika has been closely linked with various other men including actor Jeet and her most recent relationship with Sumon Mukhopadhyay which ended with the actress attempting suicide in May this year. She was also seen in the notorious film Take One where she played an actress who shoots to notoriety with a nude scene.

Apparently, Sushant was advised by his girlfriend when he began shooting with Swastika for Dibakar Banerjee's film was, "Be very careful."

Meiyang Chang, who is returning to the big screen with a small role in Dibakar Banerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshi', says he has stayed away from movies as he was getting similar roles.
The 32-year-old Indian Idol' star made his debut in Bollywood with Yash Raj's 2010 crime-comedy Badmaash Company' with Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Vir Das. That was his only film till the offer for the detective drama came.
"I was getting similar kind of roles after Badmaash Company' and I decided not to be a part of these projects. I was a big admirer of Dibakar Banerjee's works and he was always in my wish list to act under him. I feel, no role is small in his film and I feel fortunate to work with him," Chang told PTI.
Set in '40s Kolkata, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi' is currently in its post-production stage and chronicles the life of famous sleuth created by writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.
"We wrapped up shooting in May this year. As the film is set in 1940s Kolkata, there are a lot of computer graphics work needed for the film. It narrates the journey of Byomkesh Bakshi before becoming a famous detective," he said.
