I arrive too late and all the fun discussion and dil ki bhadaas nikalna has already been over and done with π.
So here are my two paisa about this entire business. Despite what TV actors say otherwise, the fact is that almost every last one of them becomes an actor dreaming of acting in movies. TV is just something that they do to get a paycheck and wait out the time it takes to land a movie or to get visibility to attract film producer attention.
This is just the sad and dismal truth. TV doesn't even get much respect from the actors and technical crew producing the shows who'd much rather be making films than doing TV.
If you ask me, such duplicity and dishonesty makes me uncomfortable. If TV is beneath you, why bother doing it? Leave it for those who genuinely enjoy working in the medium - people like Ram Kapoor and Varun Badola who seem genuinely committed to television and have never wanted to make a full transition to films.
On the other hand as Liks pointed out, shows can go on for years and actors can get stuck to playing the same role and then not get any other opportunity because people identify them too closely with the character. This happened to Smriti Irani - The Tulsi label was so hard to shake off that even an excellent show like Viruddh flopped miserably because no one wanted Smriti to play a different character.
The solution is to give the shows a finite run - a finite number of episodes, limited schedules and the flexibility to switch back and forth between tv and film - not everyone can be a crazy workaholic like Ram Kapoor to juggle both.
