Ekachakro radho yasya divya Kanaka bhooshitha,
Sa may Bhavathu supreetha Pancha hasatho divakaro. 1

Let me become dear to the five handed day breaker,
Who travels in a one wheeled divine golden Chariot.

Adhithya pradhamam nama, dwitheeyanthu Diwakara,
Thrutheeyam Bhaskara proktham chathurthanthu Prabhakara. 2

First son of Adhithi, second the day breaker,
Third he who makes things shine, fourth the maker of light.

Panchamam thu sahasramsu, sashtamchaiva Trilochana,
Sapthamam Haridaswancha Ashtamanthu Vibhavasu. 3

Fifth He who has thousand rays, sixth He who has here eyes,
Seventh He who has green horses, Eighth He who lights things,

Navamam Dina kruth proktham, dasamam Dwadasathmaka,
Ekadasam Threemurthy Dwadasam Surya eva cha. 4

Ninth The maker of a new day, tenth He who has twelve souls,
Eleventh Three gods and twelfth the Sun god.

Dwadasadhithya Namaani pratha kale Paden nara,
Dukha pranasanan chaiva Sarva Dukhancha nasyathi. 5

To the man who reads these twelve names of the Sun in the morning,
Sorrows would be stopped from coming and all his sorrows would be destroyed.

Lord Panchavarneswara appearing in five different colours is a Swayambumurthy.
Mother Tirupurasundari blesses the devotees from a separate shrine.  There is a shrine for Lord Nataraja with 8 hands in a dancing posture

According to scriptures, the devotee will derive equal benefits by having a bath in the tank of this temple as having one in the Mahamagam tank in Kumbakonam.  Kundhidevi mother of Pandavas incurred dosha as she had children with  Panchaboodhas.  She approached Maharshi Naradha for a solution.  Naradha suggested that she should bathe in seven oceans for relief.  When Kundhi Devi pleaded her inability to do so as women, Narada suggested that she should worship Lord Kalyana Sundareswarar and he would offer the next suggestion then.  Before Kundhi finished her prayers here, Narada brought the waters of the seven oceans (Saptha Sagaram) to the tank in the temple.  Kundhi belonging to Magam Star bathed in the tank and was relieved of her dosha.  Thus the Nallur temple tank derived equal importance as that of the Kumbakonam Mahamagam tank offering high benefits to the devotees, according to scriptures.

Lord Kalayana Sundareswarar appears in five different colours each day - copper, pink, golden, emerald green and one that could not be named or recognized.  Hence, is praised as Panchavarneswarar - God of five colours.
Lord granted His Feet Darshan (Pada darshan) to Saint Tirunavukkarasar.  Hence, the tradition of Sadari blessing as in Vaishnavite temple came into practice here too.  Mother Ashtabuja Makali - Mother with eight hands blesses the devotees in the temple.  Somaskanda Murthy of the temple is a replica of the one in Tiruvarur temple.  During Masi Magam day in February-March, He comes in procession in the prakara.  During the procession, though devotees fan Him for the heat, we may observe pearls of sweat on the idol.

It is said that the Vilwa tree of the temple is the first one on earth, hence called Aadhi Tree.  It would be a unique luck of those praying the Lord with the leaves of this tree.

Lord Gana Natha blesses here in the form of a Balipeeta at the entrance of West Tower.  It is only in this temple and in Kasi-now Varanasi, Gana Natha graces in this form.  A special puja is celebrated annually for Gana Natha.  People of this place and those around offer the one time milk they get from their cows for abishek.  But devotees cannot see this puja.  Amarneedhi Nayanar one among the celebrated 63 Nayanmars was granted salvation by Lord in this temple.

During the divine Shiva-Parvathi wedding in Mount Kailash, the place went down due to the heavy weight of the presence of all the beings to have this darshan.  To balance the level of the earth, Lord Shiva sent Sage Agasthya to South.  The sage had to sacrifice his wish of witnessing the wedding.  Lord assured him that He would grant the wedding darshan to him in this holy place.  Enjoying the divine darshan here, Sage Agasthya installed a Linga right of the Sundaralingam for his worship.  That Linga is behind the presiding Linga.

The images of Shiva and Parvati on Rishaba with Vishnu and Brahma are worshipped in the sanctum. Masi Magham (Feb-March) is a major festival. Nallur has another temple dedicated to Sri Adi Kesava Perumal.

The lingam itself is unique, for it is made of an unknown material and changes colours five times a day, and is thus also known asPanchavarneswarar. The lingam has 3 portions - the lower portion which joins the Avudaiyar, and is smooth, the middle portion, which is rough, and the top, which is again smooth, and is the most prominent part of the lingam. Each of these parts changes colour every 2 hours. We were in the temple for about a half an hour, and we could sense the slight change in colour even in that short time.

It is believed that this lingam is a piece of Mt. Kailash

Research has been done for colour change but the reason is still unknown

  • There are two lingams on a single square avudaiyar (not anywhere in the world).

  • Since Lord Shiva gave Deeksha to Thirunavukkarasar by placing His feet on him, as a rare custom in a Shiva temple, the devotees are blessed by placing the sataari (Lord's legs) on their heads as in Vishnu temples.
  • It said that the Jada mudi of lord Shiva is present at the back of temple, so we are not allowed to make a full round. Oblations to the manes take places here.
  • The lingam has many holes across. Sage Bringi, an ardent devotee of Siva, was not ready to worship the Goddess. So he took the form of vandu (bee family) and worshipped Shiva alone by flying around Him. Hence there are small holes on the Shiva linga. Vaalakilya munivar performed thapas as vandu (beetle) in the holes and attained
  •  mukthi here.
  • Kundhi devi got rid of her curse by taking a dip in the Saptha Sagar Theertham on a Masi magham day.

Ashtabhuja Kali with 8 arms is present in the south prahaaram of this temple. According to Bujandar naadi, Sri Maha Kali who was responsible for defending this region against the invasion of Malik Kafoor is glowing with Her divine presence here. Worshipping Her on Fridays and Ashtami is believed to absolve many doshams of devotees
