MT. KAILASH

doesnt it look similar to this

the world's purest lake and deadliest lake
manasasarovar and the rakshas sthal

mt. kailash at the backdrop of manasasarovar

it is believed that the manasasarovar was created by lord brahma (manasa- through his mind) sarovara- lake
it is the purest lake in teh world
the shape of the lake is like sun

the rakshastal was created by ravana and is considered the saltiest lake in teh world and deadliest too
no plants or living creatures are found in the lake
the shape of the lake is like a crescent

near kalpala theerth ( area near mt. kaliash) the soil itself is like vibhuthi or the holy ash

if you watch keenly you can observe steps on mt. kailash
they are 18 steps
you have to detach yourself from  the 18 worldly ties to reach the top

a beautiful verse from 12 thirumuraigal
thirugyana sambandhar

this is one of the ten verses he composed on lord shiva in Thiruvaaroor

.

.sorry unable to paste the tamil verses
you can read them here:
http://www.shaivam.org/tamil/thirumurai/thiru01_105.htm

1136 is the verse i have mentioned

translation:

oh dear! this body is made of misery and bad deeds ( because of your prev births bad deeds you have obtained this body), you have imagined that this body gives you joy, its similar to a bee swallowed by a therai( a creature which can survive even when it lives  inside a rock)which in turn is turn swallowed by a five headed serpent. the bee is tasting the honey from various flowers and is unaware that its has been engulphed by the creature, its not aware of the consequences are is mesmerized by the pleasure the honey gives, to relive from all these miseries you have to surender to the lord aroorar ( lord shiva)

i will try my best to make it simpler
a lot is conveyed in this particular verse
acutally, thirugyana sambandhar says that
the honey( pleasures and enjoyment of this maya )  the flowers( various worldly pleasures which always divert us from our goal, to attain lord)
bee (the mind which keeps hopping from one flower to another to drink the honey)
therai( the creature which can survive even inside a rock), is the body
five headed serpent( the five sense organs)

the mind (soul)is so much involved in the worldly pleasures ( honey) that it is not able to realise it is caught by the therai( body)
the main goal of this soul is to liberate itslef from teh body but the worldly pleasure is diverting it
the body in turn is controlled by the five sense organs9 serpent)

you can imagine how is the situation
and you are happy with this nectar( worldly pleasure)
the original nectar is something else( the salvation)
try to taste that nectar and not this honey( worldly pleasure)

Bhagavat gita- chapter 17 verses 11-23

SATVA GUNAA

Of sacrifices, that sacrifice performed according to duty and to scriptural rules, and with no expectation of reward, is of the nature of goodness.

Austerity of speech consists in speaking truthfully and beneficially and in avoiding speech that offends

This threefold austerity, practiced by men whose aim is not to benefit themselves materially but to please the Supreme, is of the nature of goodness.

That gift which is given out of duty, at the proper time and place, to a worthy person, and without expectation of return, is considered to be charity in the mode of goodness.

RAJO GUNAA

But that sacrifice performed for some material end or benefit or preformed ostentatiously, out of pride, is of the nature of passion,

Those ostentatious penances and austerities which are performed in order to gain respect, honor and reverence are said to be in the mode of passion. They are neither stable nor permanent.

But charity performed with the expectation of some return, or with a desire for fruitive results, or in a grudging mood, is said to be charity in the mode of passion.

THAMO GUNAA

And that sacrifice performed in defiance of scriptural injunctions, in which no spiritual food is distributed, no hymns are chanted and no remunerations are made to the priests, and which is faithless--that sacrifice is of the nature of ignorance.

And those penances and austerities which are performed foolishly by means of obstinate self-torture, or to destroy or injure others, are said to be in the mode of ignorance.

And charity performed at an improper place and time and given to unworthy persons without respect and with contempt is charity in the mode of ignorance.
