Since both Kumud and Padma mean lotus, could it be the authors cheeky way of saying, Pramaad doesn't want this lotus, since he already has that one? You know sort of Kumud's alternative in pramaads life?

Name Padma has another connotation perhaps...Padma is name of Laxmi. And look G.M.T. in his proud Sanatani Brahminical ideology, is cynically 'disdainful' of Laxmi as goal of less enlightened, common stalk people.( Saraswati vs. Laxmi). a Pet skeptic response, " Laxmi chanchal;, aaj idhar kal udhar." And friends another note, even in book she was mentioned cursorily. Not a major character. Kumud knew about her too, having found her Kamarbandh in one of Pramaad's outhouse...So perhaps not much occurrence here either...
