We're behind you Aamir
By Aditi, MovieTalkies.com, 29 June 2006

Not just the team at Movie Talkies, but the entertainment industry too is clear in expressing their solidarity in support of Aamir Khan and the recent Gujarat controversy. Even post Aamir's clarification that he is not against increasing the height of the dam nor is he a part of the Narmada Bachao Andolan; all he is supporting is what the Supreme Court has already passed in its verdict and that is that the people displaced as a result of the building of the dam should be rehabilitated.

There have been many till date to voice their opinion that Aamir should apologize and that his statements are hurting Gujarat sentiments etc. But it is nice to see the entire industry take a stand to support him. Members of the Producers' Guild and A.M.P.T.P.P as well as the Cine & Television Stars' Association have planned a meeting today to discuss the situation and how things should be taken forward. They may also plan to take a delegation to Gujarat CM Narenedra Modi. Some of the people expected to be in attendance at today's meeting include Vikas Mohan, Manmohan Shetty, Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai, Anil Kapoor, Ramesh Sippy, Mukesh Bhatt, Ashutosh Gowariker, Karan Johar, Amit Khanna, Pehlaj Nihlani and others. Although Shabhana Azmi will not be present at the meeting as she is in London, she too has expressed her support for Aamir and in spite of being politically and socially active herself, she believes that what is being done is completely unfair and that Aamir has a democratic right to express his opinion and he has said nothing which demands an apology. Even Amitabh Bachchan, expressed that he and the entire industry are behind Aamir with their support.

Aamir may or may not be present at today's meeting but we are sure he is touched at the fact that the fraternity has taken time out to support him. Today it is Aamir and his film Fanaa, tomorrow it could be any other actor and another film. Aamir on his part is willing to compensate Yash Raj Films for their financial loss in Gujarat (the film is not being screened in Gujarat and hence Yash Raj Films stand to lose Rs. 2-3 crore) by asking them to cut that amount from his remuneration.

We at Movie Talkies also express our solidarity in supporting Aamir. Aamir, we're behind you and will continue to support you in this democratic injustice to freedom of expression. It's really a sad situation, especially when we hear that Aamir fans are actually travelling from Gujarat to Mumbai just in order to see them film. Maybe the government should ask its citizens what they feel.
