This Friday will see the release of Shirish Kunder's Akshay-Sonakshi starrer JOKER. Given the fact that the month has already seen a blockbuster in the form of EK THA TIGER (still counting!) and since JOKER does not carry the hype and the popular music that should be associated with a big project, the equation becomes quite tough for the film, despite a very reasonable selling price (around 40 crores).
The other listed releases of the week include FROM SYDNEY WITH LOVE and JALPARI - THE DESRT MERMAID, and both have little or no chances at the ticket window!
Last Friday saw the release of EROS International and Bhansali Productions' SHIRIN FARHAD KI TOH NIKAL PADI. The film did get affected by the EK THA TIGER wave but still managed a decent opening weekend netting around 6 crores. The fate of the film will depend on the coming days, but being sandwiched between ETT and JOKER will surely mar its chances further. SHIRIN FARHAD KI TOH NIKAL PADI has failed to make a mark in the overseas grossing and#163; 39,500 from UK and $96,500 from the US during the opening weekend (24-26 August).
After a huge start, the record breaking run of Yash Raj Films' Kabir Khan directed EK THA TIGER continued even during the weekdays as it collected 18.65 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 4.25 crore from Ahmedabad, 1 crore from Baroda (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 41.25 lakhs from Rajkot, 20 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.25 crore from Pune, 60 lakhs from Nasik, 30 lakhs from Goa, 17.50 lakhs from Belgaum, 9.60 crore from Delhi city, 1.35 crore from Noida, 1.20 crore from Ghaziabad, 1.35 crore from Kanpur, 1.70 crore from Lucknow, 58.50 lakhs from Agra, 55 lakhs from Allahabad, 28.50 lakhs from Meerut, 13.50 lakhs from Aligarh, 5 lakhs from Moradabad, 8 lakhs from Mathura, 1.55 crore from Gurgaon, 31.65 lakhs from Faridabad, 13.35 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 43 lakhs from Chandigarh, 56.65 lakhs from Jalandhar, 15 lakhs from Amritsar, 10.50 lakhs from Ludhiana, 13 lakhs from Bhatinda, 13 lakhs from Ambala, 2.20 crore from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 5.35 lakhs from Darjeeling, 26.75 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.10 crore from Nagpur, 7 lakhs from Amravati (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 60.75 lakhs from Raipur, 2 crore from Indore, 22.25 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 7 cinemas unreceived), 1 crore from Bhopal, 4 crore from Jaipur, 50 lakhs from Ajmer, 37.35 lakhs from Bikaner, 56 lakhs from Kota, 3.55 crore from Hyderabad, 50 lakhs from Auranagabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 2 crore from Bangalore, 9.35 lakhs from Visakhapatnam, 10.20 lakhs from Vijayawada, 13.25 lakhs from Madras (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2.20 lakhs from Coimbatore and 5 lakhs from Kochi. Netting nearly 152 crores during the first extended week (9-days) and the 20 crore plus second weekend, the Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer, EK THA TIGER, is an all-time blockbuster! EK THA TIGER is also Salman's biggest overseas hit (as predicted!) grossing and#163;1,165,250 from UK and $2,348,000 from UK till the second weekend (24-26 August).
Meanwhile despite the EK THA TIGER wave, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR II managed a decent performance as it collected 50 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 7 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.35 lakhs from Baroda, 5.50 lakhs from Pune, 1.75 lakhs from Nasik, 50 lakhs from Delhi city, 11.50 lakhs from Noida, 7.35 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 10.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 10.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.25 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1 lakh from Jalandhar, 7.35 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 4.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.75 lakhs from Raipur, 6.55 lakhs from Indore, l lakh from Gwalior, 2 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.50 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unreceived) and 10 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding another 3.50 crore, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR II has netted 22.50 crores in two weeks from India. The Nawazuddin-Huma starrer is an average fare.
Concluding with Pooja Bhatt's JISM 2, the film is on its last legs collecting 10 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.50 lakhs from Baroda, 1 lakh from Pune, 10 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.65 lakhs from Noida, 2.25 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 3 lakhs from Nagpur and 1.65 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived). With another crore JISM 2 has netted 33 crores in three weeks from India. The Sunny Leone starrer is a profitable venture for the producers but a loss making venture for the sub distributors of most circuits.
