IMO, 95% of the peeps always worry about what an Imaginary "They" as in the Society will think or say..
I like that he is "Self-centric" rather than samaj-centric (I don't mean social service) He gives a damn as to how the rest of the world and their peers think he should lead his life.
Okay this...both are self-serving mechanisms..in the sense both ultimately lead to self pleasure. just different routes. But the fact that he is self-centric by classic definition of ego makes him egoistic. but the main reason I think he is not is because the true him hasnt yet fully emerged. He is still ruled by his demons. Its a conscious organized defense mechanism. not a natural instinctual reaction -->this.. him being self-centric...thats why I think that deep inside ..he is not. I dont know if he will retain this mechanism once KKG really starts returning his love but I'm prone to think that this armor wont be as strong later on. The true him will unravel. Which explains your lines below to a small extent. the shield is gone while dealing with the inner circle. He reads them perfectly but he reacts instinctively to them IMO.
He has carefully chosen to place his trust on a select few and he extends the "Self" to that circle of trust even though at times they tend to manipulate him with emosonal blackmail..
The best part is unlike most men, he recognizes the fact that he is being manipulated.. not many do (i think!) and still gives in.. I LUBB THAT ABOUT HIM.. LOUV LOUVV LOVV

Its also why I think KKG rattles him so much. He reacts naturally to her rather than in an organized manner. No control around her. which he is not used to doing outside his circle.

Anyway long story short, I dont think his is pride instilled by the rules of society. Like a young prince will command respect just because he can. His is more because of his past and because of society. Its a consequence of experience IMO. and it may not last.
Anyway I think I just supplemented what you said to begin with. What do you think?
