Mahadev' completes 500 episodes successfully!

[To set reminder and check TV schedule of Devon Ke Dev... Mahadev click here...]

The ongoing rave reviews about the mythological show Devon Ke Dev... Mahadev' are not a rumor! The show has hit bull's eye with a massive record of 500 episodes last night, something which is almost next to impossible for any mythological show! Now, the show can be successfully considered at par with shows like the yesteryear's epics like Ramayan' and Mahabharat', which had a similar record breaking history.

The plot rather the storyline of the show, showcasing primarily Mahadev' and his various roles, picked up speed right from the start! From showcasing Shiva's Tandav' to the more romantic, subdued Shiva and his Sati, the show has covered all important aspects of the supreme. Never before did people get to see a show, which was so close to actual Vedas' and Puranas' , while at the same time, touching a chord, with today's reality.

Even last night's episode was a fitting episode in every way. While the story revealed the arrival of Parvati in her Kaal roop' to end the chaos caused by aghori's, there was a fitting lesson conveyed by the goddess to womankind, touching the issue of women's crime, rampant in our society today!

She conveyed that as a female, it was important to maintain dignity and self respect in a home and in society. However, if a man or a society shuns women their due respect or insults them in any way, he should get devastated and need not be shown any respect. Women should not be considered as weaklings or objects of desire. Women should realize that they are their sole protectors and they should fight tooth and nail for their respect and dignity.

While the show highlights the truth of the devas', it targets the issues of our society today, in a more sublime and godly manner, which is what attracts the audience. Considering the issues of betrayal, women dishonor and illicit behavior, which are growing rampant in today's world, a show like Mahadev' is a fitting tribute to mankind!

The audience has appreciated a mythological story, which is just not about idealist values or mythological characters or angels and demons, but something which is relatable to their world today! It touches aspects of human' society in many impressive ways!

We hope that with the growing success, Mahadev' continues to rule the hearts of people and spins more tales, to enrich them, to resolve their issues and above all, entertain them. Let's hope we get to witness the show's 1000 episodes with as much fan furor as we do for its 500 episodes! Har har mahadev'!

Double roles add more drama to our telly shows!

Double roles do not always mean double fun as sometimes the characters come in as negative to add more spice and drama to the daily soaps on Indian Television...

Thursday, September 26, 2013 | 5:30:33 PM IST (+05:30 GMT)   |  Copyright: India-Forums.com / TellyBuzz  |   3 Comments  |  489 Views

Double roles are quite common in our Bollywood movies. Adding a blend of double fun a double role a movie has always been a great formula for making the film a hit in our Bolly town. Big actors like Dev AnandAmitabh Bachchan,Salman KhanShah Rukh KhanHema Malini, Sridevi, etc. have gathered lots of appreciation and success for their respective movies on box office which had them in a double role.

Following their path, even our Telly town seems to be very much inspired by this double role trend which was seeded by our B-Towners. Double roles are in a trend for our Tellywood but does it really follows the path of our Bollywood? To some extent, the answer is No!

In most of the Bollywood movies, double roles have given a boost to the comedy aspect of the movie but what is the role of a double role' when it comes to Indian television? Let's try to find out more on the same.

As mentioned earlier, most of the times double roles have been introduced to add humor to movies but when it comes to shows on Indian television double roles are most of the times shown to be negative.  Why is that so? The answer to this question could be the fact that a negative character adds high voltage drama and is scope for lot of twist and turns which is very much needed in Indian television shows. If the negative characters are look-alike to the positive characters then it works as adding fuel to the fire and enhances the story line, creatively.

Recently, we have seen actors of telly town donning a double role in their respective shows like, Rati Pandey (Zara and Indira) in Hitler DidiTina Dutta (Ichcha and Meethi) in Uttaran,Adaa Khan (Amrit and Rajjo) in Amrit ManthanAditya Redij (Prithvi and Ishwar) in Junoon - Aisi Nafrat, toh Kaisa IshqMohit Raina (Mahadev and Jalandhar) in Devon Ke Dev. Mahadev,Ritu Raj Singh (Inder and Tauji) in Hitler DidiGaurav Gera (Param and Pammi) in Mrs. Pammi Payarelal, Avika Gor (Roli and Jhumki) in Sasural Simar Ka and many more.

The TRP chart shows that the double role funda has certainly worked well for some of the shows but for some it has remained constant. Watching their favorite actors in a double role is certainly a treat for the viewers but the popularity meter shows that the negative double role story tracks are being liked by the viewers more over the comic ones. Whether it's the negative character played by Rati in Hitler Didi or Aditya in Junoon, the fans have surely liked the tracks more as compared to when an actor has played a double role for a comic story track.

Double roles means double effort for the actors too. Aditya Redij, who recently played Prithvi and Ishwar in Junoon, says, "A lot of hard work and thinking is required and we did a lot of home even before we started shooting for this double role sequence. It has been a wonderful experience playing a double role."

Talking about the difficulties while switching between the two characters, Aditya adverts, "The difficult part about playing a double role is that when you have to forget one character and get yourself evolved in the other one. While enacting Ishwar, I have to completely forget about Prithvi and his body language and get myself evolved in the character of Ishwar. I do not take much time in switching between my characters except for the hair styling part."

Yes, getting yourself evolved from one character to the other is not only the matter of dressing sense. As we have seen in the case of Hitler Didi, there are two different kinds of characters which are being played by Rati in which one is positive while the other one is negative. Similarly, the double role by Adaa in Amrit Manthan is also different from one another. At one time, she has played her original character of Amrit, while she also portrayed the character of Rajjo who is a typical Haryanvi girl with a different accent and of course a different dressing sense.

According to an opinion poll done on India Forums, we found that though the audiences do like their favorite actors in both type of roles but they prefer the positive ones over the negative ones being played by them. Fans of Rati Pandey opine that they would have liked the character of Zara as well if it wouldn't have taken a negative turn.

The same response we get to see in an opinion poll conducted for Aditya Redij as Prithvi or Ishwar. The fans opine that they love the character of Prithvi the most as compared to Ishwar.

So what would have happened if our telly characters would have been playing a positive character or a character with a comic sense of humor in a double role? The possibility is that even though the viewers would have enjoyed watching them the drama that these negatives ones add to the show making the show interesting would have been faded off.

As for the fans we guess as long as they get to see their favorite actors in two different avatars it doesn't matter to them as they get to see more of them and enjoy the show!

Thrilling Mahaepisode of Devon ke Dev.. Mahadev on 29th September

[To set reminder and check TV schedule of Devon Ke Dev... Mahadev click here...]

Mahadev, Life Ok's top rated show which has broken all records of success and recently completed 500 episodes is now gearing up for its Maha episode to shock the viewers with new twists on the 29th September, 2013. Mahadev has created tipples in the history of Indian Television by setting new benchmark in mythological show genres.

The maha episode will show Mahadev as a human who will take Kapaal dhari Aghori roop to save Mahakali. Mohit Raina who plays Mahadev will transform into yet another very interesting avatar to save his wife from two crazy twins Malla and Mani.

It so happened that in an unintentional situation Ganga upsets Parvati who leaves Kailash and says that she will only return when Mahadev will take a human form and convince her to come back. Meanwhile, somewhere in the southern part of India, Malla-Mani who are tantriks come to know about Parvati being unstable and has left Kailash in anguish.

Ganga tries to stop Parvati but is unable to do so. Parvati turns Mahakali on her way down South when she enters the territory of Malla- Mani. The two brothers somehow manage to pacify Mahakali who agrees to stay back in their region but she is unaware that they intend to keep her captive and use her powers.

Brahma devta is worried and informs about this to Mahadev. Rishi Bhrigu silently prays to Mahadev that only he can save Mata. Mahakali is furious and enters Malla's cave where devotees are praying to her.

Mahadev gets tensed and he says this time he will have to use some other method as Mahakali has decided to stay back in Malla- Mani's rajya on her own. Hence he takes the human form of Kapaal Dhaari Aghori.

The show is on a very gripping track and the entire unit along with the actors are making sure that they leave no stone unturned to make it edgy. Lot of hard work is being put in to make every episode a success.

Both Pooja and Mohit had to physically and mentally prove themselves during the shooting of Maha episode. To get into Kali's avatar, Puja had to paint her body blue. She had to wear a garland of skulls, weighing around five kilos.

It took the make-up artistes about four hours to paint Puja's body. Since Maa Kali's tongue is always red, she also had to pop a pill which turned her tongue blood red. With her tongue colored, Puja was not supposed to drink fluid or eat through the entire shoot. The team shot for 11 hours with just one break.

Puja says, "It was an opportunity of a lifetime. I was not keeping too well and was not in the right frame of mind to shoot, but once I went on the floors " complete with the body paint and garland, I was fine. It seemed as if Maa Kali had blessed me. I hope people appreciate the hard work that Mohit and I have put in for this episode."

What will Mahadev do in the Kapaal Dhaari form will be interesting to watch out? The Maha episode is set to air on 29th September at 8 pm on Life OK. I am excited to watch it and I am sure you will also not forget to tune in.😊

On My Plate

Shiva, the brand God who never fails

Every major Indian band has a song that celebrates him, qualifying him as a bonafide rock hero. And why not? He was into hallucinogens and danced the universe to its destruction (ahead of its subsequent rebirth), dreadlocks and all.

Then there's the snake draped around the neck. He's the subject of a hip new popular TV serial, besides being the basis for the central figure in a best-selling series of books. He's like, seriously cool.

"Shiva is the outsider," says writer and expert on mythology Devdutt Pattanaik, explaining the enduring fascination with the god. Pattanaik, who advised on the TV serial, says he's one divine figure who's easy to form a connect with. "The story is a personal one that people relate to directly."

The Mahabharata is a spectacle, to be enjoyed in full, but it's hard to focus on individual characters and stories. The Ramayana offers a single focus, but Lord Ram is too perfect and divine for people to identify with directly " and even his apparent flaws, like the abandonment of Sita, don't make him a sympathetic character.

Krishna's stories are personal and likeable, but there is a basic divergence between two very different Krishnas, the lover of the Geeta-Govinda and the shrewd strategist of the Mahabharata, that complicates the narratives.

By contrast, Shiva's story offers simple parallels to people's lives.

"His conflict with Daksha is classic son-in-law versus father-in-law, the sort of story that TV tells all the time," says Pattanaik. All gods in Indian mythology have families, but Shiva is one of the few whose family story is so central to his legends: conflicts with his wife, problems with his sons, the basic themes are familiar, even if the central character has supernatural powers and wears a snake around his neck. "He is the alpha male who is on your side," he says. "He allowed us to make a mythological serial in a different way," Pattanaik adds.

Writer Amish Tripathi's works build on this outsider appeal of Shiva. He has written the hugely best-selling Shiva trilogy of novels, which offer an imaginative retelling of Indian mythology centering on a Shiva-like character, a Tibetan tribal warrior who becomes both saviour and destroyer of the ancient civilisation of Meluha, a possible stand-in for the Indus Valley Civilisation. Tripathi explains that there are two types of heroic archetypes " those who build and maintain society and those who live outside society, but come in to rescue it at times of peril.

Shiva is the second kind of hero. Tripathi is careful to emphasise that all gods and choices of those who worship them should be respected, but the youth connect with the heroic outsider is easy to understand. Being young is all about questioning and even attacking social norms as you figure out your place in society and "Shivji is the god of rebels," he says.

"He is the god with matted hair, the god who takes drugs, he is the god who is a brilliant dancer and musician.

He is said to have invented the rudra-veena."

These physical symbols count, and it is not surprising that Shiva shows up on so many tattoos.

It isn't all rebellion though. Tripathi points out that Shiva embodies many modern virtues. Unlike other gods who are shown in more traditionally patriarchal terms, Shiva treats his wife as an equal. "Many traditional images show them seated side by side, on the same level," says Tripathi. "And Shivji will have his children on his lap." He also points out that Shiva doesn't differentiate among his devotees, who include both devas and asuras, like Ravana: "There is a saying that Shivji apne bhakton ka bhakt hai'," and this humility emerges as another attractive aspect today.

All these factors helped the channel Life OK fix on Mahadev as the defining serial and hero of the channel.

"He appealed to young and old, to men and to women," says Ajit Thakur, general manager of Life OK. But they knew they had to be careful to craft the primary appeal to young people, and that emphatically meant avoiding old-style TV mythological treatment (which included one major past serial based on Shiva, Dheeraj Kumar's Om Namah Shivay, that first aired in 1997). "Our first big decision was not to build a set," says Thakur. "Other mythologicals have always built this elaborate set, with gold pillars and all that, and then everything has to take place on it.

We wanted to break away from this." Casting the character was obviously critical.

Mohit Raina, who plays Mahadev, has been the huge hit of the series, and a large part of the reason for his success.

Thakur says they needed someone who had classic good looks and a great body, but who also seemed grounded, and not offputting or arrogant.

"Mohit was the perfect choice. He comes across as a very rooted person, humble despite his looks and success."

They also realised, as the serial developed, how the stories of Shiva matched modern themes. "For example, when we did the track about Shiva getting Ganga to flow on earth, we have him warning that people will not respect her and this misuse will lead to environmental problems and water wars. We included all this, but it isn't new " the Shiva Purana is full of lesser known aspects like this."
