Chapter 6 Part 1: Distribution of Dialects

Location: Kushi's Sculptures' exhibition:

The Victory group attends the Sculptures' exhibition. All were really enjoying it. Shashank also attend the exhibition. He was exploring all the possibilities to publish abt this in his paper after all she is the daughter of the former minister.

Kushi was excited to see that her exhibition is a big success. Shashank was interviewing Kushi and also taking the views of the people attended the exhibition.

Kushi thanks all her friends for attending and making her exhibition a gr8 success.

Sid was a bit upset on something and when his friends asked abt it, he answered bluntly.

Charu was also very upset. Both Sid n Charu were not talking to each other. Their friends were puzzled with their behaviour. All the girls decided to know what the reason was and took Charu to the University Club and slowly asked her the reason.

This is the issue of Sid n Charu:

Sid's parents brought a match for him. She is the daughter of a big shot. And his parents were insisting him to meet the girl.

Sid revealed his love for Charu. But after knowing that Charu is an orphan and is working as an in-charge of the University Club they were against to their marriage.

He argued with them a lot but they explained that it will benefit him professionally and he can settle in life too.

Now he is in a dilemma. He cannot say no to his parents nor can he leave Charu.

He was trying to convince Charu about it. They argued very badly about it.

C: Why is this happening to me all the time? I lost my parents in my childhood whom I love so much. Now Sid too''''.. (and burst into tears)

He wants me to forget him and lead my life. How could he say that? He is a changed man now. He is also planning to settle in abroad. He says now that he want to be rich and famous. How can he be so selfish? He is seeing his personal benefits but what about me?

All the friends consoled her. They were surprised and shocked to believe what Charu said abt Sid. "So that's the reason for his changed behaviour," they thought. They all decided to do something for her and also teach a lesson to Sid.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manish Rajan couldn't put the northeastern dialect and the word "Sahu" out of his mind. It was possible that the witnesses had mistaken the accent, but he didn't think so.

He went and bought a map of M.P. Aravind Sethuraman had lived in Betma near Indore. At first he looked for the places starting with character Sahu. The name Sahore jumped out at him but Sahu - Sahore couln't correlate and the dialect? He searched further, but couldn't find any other locations beginning with Sahu. He folded the map and was frustrated.

When he arrived at police headquarters, he headed straight to the public information department, which served as the headquarters for public relations arm. As various pamphlets were published here, this office had a collection of reference books.

The section chief was also Manish ji's former supervisor.

C (Smiling): Hey, it's unusual to see you here.

M (Greeting him): I didn't think I'd see you in a place like this. But I'd like to ask u something, if I may?

C: What do u need?

M: Well, I came to u sir, because I know u r an expert on many things.

C: I'm not really an expert, but if it's something I know, I'd be glad to help u.

M: It's about the northeastern dialect.

C: Northeastern dialect? Sorry, but I was born in the south. I don't know much about the northeastern dialect.

M: What I would like to know is if there are other places in India besides northeast region where the dialect is spoken.

C: Hmm. U mean if they speak it in a certain locale, not if one individual might speak it. U mean if the population of a certain area speaks that dialect, right?

M: Yes, that's what I mean.

C: I wonder if that's a possibility. I think the dialect is unique to the region. But I have something that might tell u more.

He stood up and took a volume from the set of encyclopedias. Placing the heavy volume on the desk, he turned the pages. Finding the article, he skimmed through it.

"Read this part here", he said, pushing the book toward Manish ji.

He read the article covering different theories on the distribution of dialects. It was of no help.

C: U don't look very happy. Weren't you satisfied with the article?

M: It's not that. I wanted to confirm something about dialects to see if I had a usable clue or not.

C: And what would satisfy u would be to find out that the northeastern dialect is used in some other region. Is that it?

M: Yes. But from reading this, I'm convinced that there's no possibility.

C: Hold on a minute. (Thinking of something) this encyclopedia only gives summaries. It might be better for u to take a look at a more specialized book. A university classmate of mine is an Indian language specialist at the Ministry of Education. He might be able to give u some information. I'll call him right now.

After talking to his friend on the telephone he turned towards Manish ji.

C: He wants u to go to his office and talk to him directly. I'll write a letter if u want to see him.

M: Yes, I'd like to talk to him.

C: He will meet u in the NLRC building.

Manish Rajan reached to the place and walked towards the white building which was a small structure with a sign at the entrance identifying it as the National Language Research Center.

Most of the research students working on this project visit this place often. There will be a membership card indicating the concerned university they are coming from.

He gave his name card to the receptionist. A thin man in his forties came down the stairs, Mr. Vishwanath Malhothra, the ministry of Education specialist who was the public information chief's classmate.

V: So u're wondering if the northeastern dialect is used in some other region?

M: Yes. I've come to ask u if there is a region like that.

V: I wonder (scratching his head). There are a few instances of the northeaster dialect being used in areas settled by people from that region. Ok now what is it that u are checking on? I assume that it's related to a case.

Manish Rajan described the case briefly.

V: (Thought for a while) was it really the northeastern dialect?

M: The witnesses said it sounded like that. The victim and his companion had only a short conversation, so we can't be certain, but all five witnesses said it seemed to be that dialect.

V: Is that so? And yet they were not from that region?

M: We discovered later that one of the men - the victim was not from that area at all. He was from Betma, near Indore which is just the opposite direction.

V: What? Near Indore?

He muttered to himself and thought hard for a moment; and asked Manish ji to wait for a moment. He walked over to a book case and pulled out a volume. He stood there reading for a while. When he walked back over to where Manish ji sat waiting, he was smiling.

V: This book is about the dialects. Here why don't u read this section?

From the look of the specialist's face, Manish Rajan could guess what he had discovered. He eagerly read that passage indicated.

Indo-Aryan languages are divided into many and spread all over India. Each language is combination of many dialects. The dialects also differ in their slang. Few dialects sound similarly.

Manish ji jumped out of excitement when he read the one which he wants.

M: So that's the link.

V: So in ur case, there are people who speak with the dialect which sound similar to northeast dialect. And this is the map which shows the regions where these dialects are spread. And one more thing, as u already read that it differ in the slang, this may be the reason for the witnesses to judge the victim's dialect wrongly. Can only be a possibility.

Manishji carefully checked the map and surprised to see the place Sahore in M.P. He was confused and asked the chief, the witnesses said Sahu but the place I found is Sahore how can it be related.

V: It's simple. The slang in which he pronounced might differ - Sahore as Sahu. And the people in this region swallow the end words. Why don't u try ur investigation in this direction and check. Hope u may get positive response.

M: It's amazing. Thank u very much.

V: Has this been helpful?

M: Yes, very much helpful. Thank u for ur time. We will try in this direction for sure.

Note: About the dialect thing. want to clear somethings.

i have just shortened the explanation to 4 - 5 lines hardly. as it was a lengthy passage in the wiki and hard to explain.

all i can say is everyone knows that the languages differ and even the dialects in the language too vary.

depending on that the witnesses mistook what the victim spoke.

u can ask me if u really didn;t get what i have posted. will try to explain it.
