He was inside...the journalist went inside and saw him and might have exposed him. So, he manually killed the journalist and pulled him into the tunnel and escaped out through the terrace route which duo discovered. Then came running from the other side when the kids shouted. They didn't show it, but the kids might have shouted after some 1/2 hour or so...therefore there was enough time to escape, change his clothes and come back into the party.
My own version for this. 😛
Actually unintentionally kids trapped the journalist. That eagle was already set On. and journalist went inside and closed the door. After that when he attempted to open the door he got hit by needle which sort of paralyzed him. Then kids in process of opening the door from outside actually kidnapped that journalist inside the door. When their father came to know about some journalist inside room and not present there in room he came to know journalist is trapped in door and right now in unconscious state. Later he came back and killed journalist
