One thing about mythos - while devoted people watch them for obvious reasons, for a more agnostic audience, they would generally have to appeal to something new. Since Krishna's story is generally known, such an audience could be split down the middle on the question of whether to watch it or not. While some may watch it just out of curiosity about how certain events have been portrayed, others may watch it only if there is something novel being shown that's not described in the scriptures and rarely shown.
Even allowing for that difficulty on the part of the PH, I'd argue that since Paundrak's story is not well known, they could have shown the original story, and still garnered interest. However, they couldn't have dragged it on as long as they have. To be fair to them, they saw good TRPs w/ the original Sudama track, but then found that the Mahabharata track was doing nothing for them. Maybe if they had stuck w/ the original story and had Krishna meet them only during Draupadi's swayamvara, they may have done better - provided that the Draupadi chosen was as compelling as Revathy and Susheela, the only 2 actresses in this serial to have made an impact.
But I do see a part of their problem. W/ Sudama, they had good TRPs, w/ the Mahabharata, they had poor TRPs, then they improved slightly towards the end of the Susheela the vamp track, and then increased more after Paundrak was introduced.
But while I recognize the importance of TRPs, I do think it's wrong for them to twist mythos for those reasons. If that's the case, then the only mythos they should stick w/ is MSDK. I for one, can't stand Murli anymore, and nor do I have much of a patience for a fictional devotee like Queen Tara, or Krishna showing her his universal roop. In fact, when I see such scenes nowadays, I just instantly switch to DkDM, and only watch on days that I happen to be updating.
If the CVs want to make it interesting, there are a lot of creative ways of doing it, w/o changing the story. For one, they could show things like Sishupala raiding Dwaraka every now & then, Krishna conversing w/ Sudama & Uddhava, Balarama running things (if he is king) and consulting Krishna on governance, Subhadra growing up (why wait until the foundation of Indraprastha to introduce her?) and so on. At least, they won't violate the storyline, and they can keep doing that until they think that they are ready to resume w/ the Mahabharata. Oh, and please, lose that stupid flute - Krishna used it for the gopis, not for the likes of Arjun, Paundrak, Susheela, Sudama and so on. Nothing turns me off more than that flute.
But at this point, I have no doubts in my mind - I want this serial to end w/ the death of Sishupala, since the CVs have shown that they don't have a clue about Krishna's history.
