Truth and dare

Monday to Fridays, 10.20 pm, Life OK

Host: Rajeev Khandelwal

Rating:***

Sach Ka Saamna offers a mirror to the deteriorating moral and social fibre of our country and the values we prideourselves on. As the host, Rajeev Khandelwal has an unobtrusive way of talking to the contestants through the show

Rajeev Khandelwal is back to making others wash their dirty linen on national television. Truth is stranger than fiction they say and the contestants who appear on Sach Ka Saamna confess to a life of lies and deceit. This season is inspired by Anna Hazare, as the makers have taken upon themselves to fight against corruption. So you have contestants pledging to say the truth and come clean on all that they have done wrong.

At the time of writing, we saw two contestants β€” one, a lawyer-activist-small-time-politician from Hasanpur and another, an insurance agent β€” digging their grave as they answered questions ranging from petty misbehaviour (hiding girlfriends in hostel room) to being seriously involved in forgery, theft, scams etc. The insurance agent had an illegitimate affair and had even sired a child outside marriage.

As for the game, contestants have to answer 21 questions with the polygraph machine recording their answers. The prize money is ' 1 crore that has been split into three phases. Clearing the first and second phases assures them of taking home a minimum of '2 lakh and '10 lakh respectively. The game is over when the polygraph contradicts the contestants' replies.

While we are not sure, how the show helps the country to get rid of corruption, it's money that makes them spill the beans. We wonder how many of them would happily sit on national television and bare their secrets if there was no booty to win! We are not sure if these paragons of truth will go back to leading 'clean' lives once the camera switches off!

However, Sach Ka Saamna offers a mirror to the deteriorating moral and social fibre of our country and the values we pride ourselves on. As for the contestants, they justify all their misdeeds and blame it on the circumstances. Rajeev Khandelwal as the host is not only good looking and easy on the eye, but he also has an unobtrusive way of talking to the contestants through the show. He asks them pointed questions, demands some serious explanations and doesn't judge them even once. He's definitely one big reason you come back to the show every night and of course, end up asking yourself some unsettling questions.

Verdict: Engaging, disturbing stuff… somebody's lies is somebody's entertainment.

Rajiv Khandelwal beats SRK in MSN Year End Poll
Announcement / Corporate December 29, 2011, 18:27 IST

The countdown to ring out 2011 has begun and What a Year it has been'.we won the Cricket World Cup, we had scandals after scandal in politics, a new leader emerged in form of Anna, and Aiswarya Rai Bachchan, along with the nation, welcomed Beti B had. Whichever way you see, you will agree that 2011 was one action packed year!

Therefore, at the dawn of 2012, MSN India invited consumers to vote for the best and the worst of 2011 under the categories: Bollywood, Sports, leaders and the most admired women. Indians have voted up a storm and we have had a whopping 5.2 million votes!! The results are out, some are expected and some are massive surprises

Read on to know more:

Bollywood

Best Actor (Male): The 'Shaitan' of Bollywood, Rajeev Khandelwal has bagged the 'Best Actor Male' title. What's more surprising? He has beaten the more obvious, Shahrukh, the King Khan and Imran Khan, the chocolate boy! With ''.. Votes, great going Rajeev!

Best Actor (Female): Katrina Kaif. Ahem! So 'Shiela Ki Jawani' has eclipsed 'Silk Smita' and Katrina has beaten Vidya Balan for the top spot. We hope this would be a great encouragement for Kat and she would win the top spot again next year ' not for being a 'Chikni Chameli''this time for actually acting!

Worst Actor (Male): And the award goes to Himesh Reshammiya. We Indians admire bravery and this man is the bravest person in Bollywood currently. If you do not believe us, kindly watch his movies. But for that, you need to be very brave too! In fact, Aby Baby might have got blessed with a BaB this year; however, he has definitely not managed to be on the apple of the Junta's eye! He gave a tough competition to Himesh Reshamiya in the category of the 'worst actor male'.

Worst Actor (Female): Esha Deol. Well! At least she won something.

Best Film: Bodyguard. Lovely Singh gave a tough competition to other contenders, Delhi Belly and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. But, we are not surprised. Salman Bhai is pretty hard to beat! And with this, the bad boy of Bollywood has ruled the people's hearts two years in a row. Last year, Dabang had emerged as the Movie of the Year in the MSN India Diwali Dhamaka Poll.

Worst Film: Mausam. One of the reviews said that the movie was so long that India could have accommodated a couple of terror attacks by the time the movie finished. Go Figure!

Sports

Indian Sportsman of the year: M S Dhoni is the undoubted winner. Why not? After the legendary Kapil Dev, this is the next man who won the world cup for us. You do us proud Dhoni!

Best Indian Sporting event: The Cricket World Cup, what else??????? India winning the cup is still afresh in our minds and hearts. But, the big surprise is that there is just a difference of 1000 votes between the Cricket World Cup and the Hockey World Cup. Do we smell a return of the Hockey decade?

Most followed Indian Sport: It's Cricket for the most obvious reasons but here too the difference between Cricket and Hockey is a mere 64 votes. Hopefully, this is sign of a renewed interest in our national game.

Leaders

Most Admired Indian Leader: Narendra Modi wins this title and beating other hot favorites Anna Hazare and Rahul Gandhi in the process.

Women

MSN She Most Admired Indian Female Icon: Kiran Bedi wins this well deserved title for her fight against corruption.

Top 10 Bollywood movies of 2011

The writer has posted comments on this articleSubhash K JhaSubhash K Jha | Dec 30, 2011, 03.32PM IST

Subhash K Jha selects his 10 favourite films of 2011.

1. Pyaar Ka Punchnama: The year's sleeper success that kept us awake for a good 2 hours with its celluloid anthem of ribtickling misogyny. Three room-mates and their troubled love relationships formed the core of the comic conflict. Every character and each episode spilled over with a delightful deja vu. Debutant director Luv Ranjan managed a 3-guys-in-a-sexist-soup comedy much better than Madhur Bhandarkar in Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji also released this year. And the director did it with untried actors. Kartik Tiwari(who is now doing the same director's next Saathi) and Divyendu Sharma(who is in David Dhawan's Chashme Buddoor) were among the best discoveries of the year.We luv you,Luv, for bringing push to shove without tripping over.

2. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: It never rains in Spain except when three friends take off on a holiday to the country, to do the things they always wanted to(but were afraid to ).Zoya Akhtar's anthem to human dreams and aspirations did what Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti had done 5 years ago. It prompted the audience into a spiritual awakening. This time the candles were being lit not at the Gateaway of India but in thousands of hearts. 'Guys, go for it!' said the movie. After seeing the film people actually went and did what they always wanted to.Incredible!

3. Shor In The City: Gritty, witty and pithy this one paid a homage to the city of Mumbai through three inter-connected stories that jumped the gun, literally, firing salvos at conventional storytelling techniques while creating a language that was cohesive in its own disembodied way.Does that make sense? Shor In The City's directorial duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK tried to make sense of the chaos of the city without resorting to exaggerations and gimmicks. And a whole of lot dark humour.Uniformly competent performances added a sheen of excitement to this on-the-edge drama-thriller.

4. Rockstar: As Jordan the rockstar from Pitam Pura(if that isn't a contradiction in terms, what is?) Ranbir Kapoor sold his soul to a film that seemed to revel in the ripples of Rahman's rock rhythms. Yes, the narration lacked a cohesive sense of purpose and seemed to drift in as many directions as the protagonist's music took him.We were finally left with a film that worked for its medium-pitch rendering of a musical symphony on the artiste as a selfdestructive creature. Ranbir played Devdas on acid. And it worked.Jim Morrison ki kasam.

5. Shaitaan: Debutant director Bejoy Nambiar's clenched tooth-edged look at one night in the lives of a bunch of selfdestructive upperclass kids in Mumbai. Adrift and hedonistic, the portrait of self-gratification was dead-on.And deadly. Nambiar plunged into the lives of his characters with unapologetic gusto, bringing to the surface the harsh reality of lives lived on the brink of destruction.Convincing performances, a fabulous script and an editing pattern that didn't celebrate abstrusness Shaitaan brought the devil out of the closet straight on screen.A special mention of Rajeev Khandelwal as a cop on the edge.He re-defined the cliched part.

6. Tanu Weds Manu: Those who couldn't digest the over-sweetened level of shaadi-video in Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun breathed a sigh of relief when Aanand Rai (a late bloomer for sure!)came forward with a film that made the festivities and flirtation during a typical North Indian wedding actually seem pleasant and enjoyable. The romance that grew in the Bunty aur bubbling brew was panoramic yet intimate and warm. And the small towns of North India never looked more inviting.Give or take a wedding card. The narrative meshed the Madhavan-Kangna relationship into acres of music masti and other diversions without flirting too hard with frivolity. No mean achievement.

7. I Am: Onir's segmented and layered, gentle sensitive and hardhitting 3-in-1 package about fertility clinics, police harassment,Kashmir militancy, child abuse and alternate sexuality provided a revealing view into contemporary life. Not allowing the narrative to be crowded with ideas , not leaning excessively on social statements , the troubled and troubling stories in I Am flowed in a smooth motion of life.Fluently.

8. Stanley Ka Dabba: For the sheer happiness of watching a film that walked with the child and doesn't talk down to him,for the sheer relief of hearing an original voice in the gaggle of derivative children's films, Amol Gupte's debut film scored high marks. And for making little Partho Gupte and his friends act and react the way children in real life do we will be eternally indebted to the director. This one tugged at our heartstrings without playing the violin.

9. No One Killed Jessica: A sensational true-life crime brought alive on screen with the deft delicacy of a chef slow-boiling a delicate digestible meal , this one was a class act. Recreating the events around the sensational Jessica Lal's murder in Delhi director Rajkumar Gupta also fashioned the ultimate chick flick with Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee putting in super bravura performances. It's hard to make a watchable feature film out of a real-life incident. This one managed just that. With resounding success.Jessica lived again. This was a rare bio-pic that didn't offend those whose lives the plot touched.

10. The Dirty Picture: An uneven storyline, a blurred moral code and a jerky graph for the colourful protagonist's character couldn't take away from glory that Vidya Balan brought to Silk's role. Blossoming into a formidable figure of vibrancy and voluptuary she virtually re-invented the heroine for the first time since Jaya Bhaduri, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. If a Dirty Picture can be so delectable we can't wait for it to get filthy.

Other remarkable films of the year: Prawal Raman's 404 Nitesh Tiwari & Vikas Bahl's Chillar Party,Shoaib Mansoor's BOL ,Abhinay Deo's Delhi Belly, Anurag Kashyap's That Girl In Yellow Boots, Nila Madhab Panda's I Am Kalam,Neerav Ghosh's Soundtrack, Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat.
