Sony closes gap with Star Plus

By afaqs! news bureau, afaqs!, Mumbai, September 22, 2011
Section: News Category: Media Publishing

Interestingly, DD1 has surpassed the viewership of STAR One and Sahara One, bagging 16 extra GRPs to end the week with 46 GRPs. Its relative channel share has also moved up from 2.3 per cent to 3.5 per cent.

The viewership gap between the top GEC player Star Plus, and the recently crowned second-in-command has significantly reduced for the week ended September 17, 2011 (TAM C&S, 4+, HSM).

While Star Plus, still the leader of the flock, has lost 15 GRPs during the week, Sony has added 28 GRPs in Week 38, thereby further squeezing the gap in between.

The win has chiefly come on the back of its top-rated game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), which is the No. 1 show for the given week, with a TVR of 6.01. In the previous week, the show had scored a peak TVR of 5.03, and was the third-most watched show in the Hindi GEC space.

As a result, though small in range, Sony's relative share has further moved up the ladder to grab a 22.6 per cent share of the overall Hindi GEC pie. The channel's other two properties -- Bade Achche Lagte Hai, with a 4.08 TVR, and C.I.D. with 3.74 TVR, also helped Sony add those extra numbers. Meanwhile, Star Plus' relative share has dropped to 22.2 per cent from 24.1 per cent in the previous week.

At No. 3, Colors, too, has slipped 14 points down to register 219 GRPs for the week, while its relative share has dipped to 16.7 per cent (18.2 per cent in the previous week).

At No. 4, Zee TV, however, moved up to 184 GRPs from 183 points, while its relative share fell to 14 per cent, from 16.2 per cent.

Sab TV at No. 5 has moved up the ladder to register 124 GRPs (from 112 GRPs) for the week, while its relative share stands at 9.4 per cent (8.8 per cent).

Imagine TV follows next with 75 GRPs in Week 38. Its GRPs have moved up from 68 GRPs that it had registered in the previous week, while its channel share stands at 5.7 per cent (5.3 per cent in the previous week).

Interestingly, courtesy the 2011 NatWest Series, DD1 has surpassed the viewership of STAR One and Sahara One, bagging 16 extra GRPs, to end the week with 46 GRPs. The India-England ODI series fetched the channel a 1.59 TVR, and was the highest-rated event on DD1. Rangoli, with 0.5 TVR, is the second most-rated show on the channel. DD1's relative channel share has also moved up from 2.3 per cent to 3.5 per cent.

STAR One in the eighth spot stands at 43 GRPs, up from the 41 GRPs that it had garnered in the previous week. Its relative share is 3.3 per cent. Sahara One is stable at 31 GRPs, and its relative share is 2.4 per cent.

Kaun Banega Crorepati (Sony) leads the list of the 10 most-watched programmes, clocking a TVR of 6.01, followed by Saathiya Saath Nibhana (Star Plus) and Balika Vadhu (Colors) with TVRs of 5.4 and 4.78, respectively.

The fourth most-watched programme is Pratigya, with 4.37 TVR. Uttaran (4.27 TVR) and Pavitra Rishta (4.27 TVR) follow next. Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, C.I.D., Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Is Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon are also a part of the Top 10 list.
