Chapter Twelve

Previous Chapter

Next Chapter  ...not decided

We continue the story of the two Patwardhan boys, Sanket and Daksh.    They were brought up, in this upright family, and throughout the school career, there was not a single blotch on their names, and were highly regarded by their classmates and friends.     One boy, Sushant, who came from out of Bombay, had to  commute long distance from his Uncle's house, so one day, the two Patwardhan boys, who became his friends, thought of asking their parents, to accommodate him, in one of their spare rooms on the first floor.   Once they got the go ahead from their parents, they told Sushant, to ask his uncle to meet his parents, so that he could make the arrangements for his stay in their house.    He was younger than Sanket, and older than Daksh.   Soon, it was decided, that Sushant would stay in the Patwardhan house, and the three boys used to go to school together.    Their mother did not have any trouble to see that they would be ready to go to school.   All she had to do is keep their uniforms ready, and they would all dress up by themselves, with the training they had received from their father, right from an early age, and go to school, walking all the way.    They would carry their lunch boxes with them, and in the evening after the school ended, would come home together, without loitering here and there like some of their other classmates.   Even when pressed to stay back, the boys would refuse, as their commitment to the house was paramount, and their sense of discipline never failed them.

Sanket finished his 12th standard and went to the college, where his father taught.    He took B.Com, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant.    He had completed his graduation, in 1989 and took a job as an assistant accountant, after his Chartered Accountancy certification, in 1992.      While working, he met a girl, named Rohini, who was smart and vivacious.   The shy Sanket, was soon captivated by the clever Rohini, and she made him, take her out to different places, and the poor boy, did not know how to go about it, as in his house, everything was done by a sense of tradition.

Now Rohini came to the City, from a small town in Maharashtra, where the boys did not mix with girls easily.   The girls eyed the boys, and passed remarks about who was handsome and who was not.   Rohini was from a conservative family, and felt tied down by restrictions, which she resented.   She had a younger sister, who was very docile, besides being pretty.   She always obeyed her mother, who was a devoted human being, who fulfilled all the wishes of her aggressive husband, and the needs of her girls.   She had to do tight rope walk, between the father and his daughters.   The younger girl, Madhura was no problem, as she obeyed her.   But Rohini was very independent and assertive, and wanted her own way, and by watching other girls, came to know, how to go around her mother, and make her agree to her demands.    The cunning trait, she inherited from her father, and Madhura was more like her mother.

This type of girl that Rohini was, she soon adapted to the City life, and bullied her co-workers, and got the peons do her bidding, with her charms.   Sanket fell for her bait, and one day, on her pressure, took her home to introduce her to her parents.  Vibha was a gullible woman, and thought all human beings were like her, and so, she too fell for Rohini's staged charms, and her thought went strait to make her the eldest daughter in law.   She did not waste any time, and as soon as her husband came from work, she started working on him, with her soft and winsome ways, and praised this new girl to the skies, and her husband was road-rolled into accepting her choice.   Sanket had not much to do, but to acquiesce to his mother, and Rohini felt great, that she was going to be a Professor's daughter in law and the husband of a Chartered Accountant.    She had big dreams, for a small town girl.

By this time, Shridar and Shyamal too had their own children.  The elder daughter was born a little after Daksh, in 1981 and she got a younger brother, whom they named Vedant, in 1983.  They too went to school, and were very obedient children.  Vedant was a little bit like his father, and would back answer him, from a very early age, but ultimately, he would go by his wishes, and they too went to the same school, where their cousins had gone.   Daksh was very possessive of his young cousin, Akruti, and would see that she never got hurt, or that she needed anything.   He was there right in front to help her, if anyone tried to tease her in the school.   She too, loved her older cousin, more than she loved her own father and Sanket.   He would be her guardian and guide.

In 1998, there was a grand wedding in the Patwardhan house, the first one after their grandfather and grand mother had passed away in the seventies.   The house was fully decorated, and the marriage took place with their full traditions, and the girls parents and her sister and relatives too were present, and they had a good time in this large and modern house, very much different from their small town little house.

The century got over and Rohini started to show her true colors, but the Kaka, always snubbed her, and there was a very antagonistic relationship between the two, but her mother in law, always sided with her daughter in law, and defended her not even knowing what she was up to.   Rohini had wound her round her fore-finger, and the gullible lady, never knew it, neither did her husband notice anything out of the way.   But the uncle was dead sure that the girl was playing a game, and he was ever watchful of her, and often suggested caution to his brother and his wife, but it fell on deaf ears.

Sushant too got married, and left the house, so the room was free, and Kaka was looking for a Paying Guest, to replenish his income.     Into this house, came a young girl, from Darjeeling, after finishing her college, and was house hunting, and met Vibha in the park, who brought her home, and after negotiations, the Kaka, offered to sublet the room to her.    You have seen the rest in the story of this girl, Naina Bhardwaj, shown on our channel, Star Plus.

As you all know, Naina finished her college a year after Sanket was married, and when she came to know that Anjali was not her real mother, she left the house in a huff, and went to meet her friend Shristi, in Darjeeling.   She saw that they needed someone to work on the wedding, and she volunteered and it was a success.   It was during this time, she met Daksh, a budding lawyer who had come to meet Sushant.    Those who have watched Sapno se bhare Naina, know well how they met, and what happened there.    Naina, had gone through lots of trials and these made her strong for the journey ahead, and you would notice, that in every instance, she would overcome the obstacles, bravely, and ultimately cross the hurdle, as she would do when she was racing her horse.     Whenever you find her or Daksh in situations which do not seem to have an exit route, be sure, that her grandmother Radha Battacharya-Bardhwaj, is watching over her, and will get her out of the spot, and free her and let her into a wide green pasture, and the others will come chasing after her.   It  will bring joy, where there is hopelessness.    Never give up, even at the darkest moment.   There is going to be light at the end of the tunnel. The reason I would like to break it here, is because ,the SSBN is still developing, and I would not like to spoil the story, if by chance ,it is going to bring a new aspect and turn the tide of revulsion.

Perhaps, later on, we might know how to move forward.   t thank all those who have made it a point to read this version of my interpretation of Naina Bhardwaj

If the CVs thrust  rubbish down our throats, then I might change my mind, and start a alternative script.   Let us hope, they are wise enough, not to disappoint t he viewers.
