Chapter One: The Choice
"This is it!" Radhika makes her mind. She took her time to decide. "After all its just about gaining experience", she told herself. But other things runs through her mind. "What if, Dad says no...", paused her once again, "forget it Radhi, life is too short to take an easy decision so long, go with it!" She leaves her room.
Radhika just so confused. Completing Masters in Psychology from Georgia University was no matter of joke. Georgia is one of the best in England. But after she returned home, she saw and understood that her parents still have other things to tell. Dad thinks of some good Phd. and then professor job, marriage will also come her way. Mom has only marriage plans in her mind. "Gosh! When they will understand?" laments Radhika.
But she knows that this is not what she wants. She wants to work with people who need help. Autism, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and hundreds on phobias are there present in common world. She knows the pain, as her cousin, Vivek was dyslexic. She knows it now. She never knew then. So just help.
Radhika finally goes to her father. "Dad...", she calls.
Dad: "hmm, what?", replying while going through his stocks and shares lists on PC.
R:"I am applying for a job"
D:"Good enough", but his mind still on the PC screen.
R:"Its the ICPMF."
Radhika's dad got still for a second. He then looks at his daughter. "What did you say? Did I hear ICPMF?"
R:"You got it right."
Dad left his seat, stood up and came near to Radhi, with a disbelief in his face.
D:"I presume that you are absolutely sane because a rare case of insanity will speak like that."
D:"What? What do you want to prove? You got your degree, you went out of India and I felt that will do some good for you. I never felt that this will make you an idiot. Only stupid can think of that and I have a stubborn belief that you are not stupid. So let me keep it that way."
R:"I have decided, I am applying there."
D:"Oh really? Is that so? So why you came here? Just to say bye bye? Go to hell. If you want my permission, my answer is no."
R:"You don't need to get hyper. Such brouhaha is not required. But I am going, dad. Its a challenge I must take."
Radhika left the room. She had decided, so she will go. Her application for the job of Psychologist and Therapist at ICPMF was posted on that same day.
ICPMF. Institute of Correctional Psychology Medical Facility at Bunder, near Manali at Himachal Pradesh, is a well known and highly reputed centre of mental patients. Some of the inmates are criminals (that's why its Correctional) who indulge themselves in various criminal activity comes here when the court of law declares them insane. So act to come here and some really are. Radhika's dad knows all so he showed his anger. But Radhika always wanted to know criminal mind.
"They are very interesting subjects, Charu," says Radhika to Charu or Charulata Sen, best friend of Radhika. Radhika now in a Cafe Coffee Day shop in Mumbai with Charu.
Charu: "yeah, those criminal minds are really good subjects for sure. I wonder what happen to other subjects like History, Geo..."
R: "Shut up Charu! Don't joke. I literally fought with my parents for this. This is going for one month now."
C: "But ICPMF is like Oh My God! Why Radhi? Why on earth that one? There are several other place you can put your psycho."
R: "Psycho?? Now this is it. Charu one more joke and I'll leave."
C:"Chillax Radhi! Just sip that vanilla cream ice mocha of yours, you'll be fine. By the way, when's the interview?
R:"Next month. I received the call letter yesterday. 16th of next month at Manali, ICPMF has head office there."
C:"Oh, tussi na jao!' Ha ha ha, just kidding!"
R:"I am sure that you need a psychologist, you joker!" smiled Radhika.
