Hindi Cinema has always been male dominated. Very few scripts are written with the heroine as the central character. No matter how big or popular the actress is, the fact remains that, more often than not,she plays second fiddle to the hero. But on the small screen,it's a different story altogether.

Television is the medium where you see females playing the leads, and the men merely playing the unimportant character, essaying negligible roles. Be it in a positive role,or a negative, women play the most important characters.

The 'saas bahu' sagas

Soaps came to dominate the scene with the entry of Balaji Telefilms. Who can forget the most popular T.V soap, and perhaps the longest running, 'Kyunki saans bhi kabhi bahu thi'. Tulsi Virani, the protagonist, was always the character in focus. Even the popular male characters merely revolved around her. Smriti Irani, as Tulsi, won a major fan following. A feat unachieved by any male T.V actor.

The villains in the serial were also women. Who can forget the obnoxious Mandira! All the characters we can recollect from the serial today are perhaps the women. Baa, Daksha, Savita, and others.

'Kahaani Ghar Ghar ki' also running at the same time, was a similar 'family drama', with women in the lead.Sakshi Tanvar played Parvati, who kept the Agarwal household together, and the serial popular. Again Shweta Keswani, Shweta Kwatra were the vamps. Men, in the serial, merely stayed behind the curtains and came out to wail and cry.

This has been true for all the serials being telecast at the time. 'Kahin kissi roz', 'Kkusum', 'Bhabhi',' Des me nikla hoga chand', and so many more. This continues even today, with serials like 'Mrs Kaushik ki paanch bahuae', 'Sanskar Lakshmi', 'Sasural Genda phool', and the likes.
So majorly dominated by women were these soaps, that they came to be known as the 'saas bahu dramas'. Wonder if there will ever be a 'damaad- sasur' drama on prime time!

The comedy Queens

The domination of women on the small screen is not limited to these weepy sagas. The cast of 'Saas bina Sasuraal' is predominantly male dominated, and yet the story revolves around the character of Tanya.
Sab TV is the undisputed king of comedy. Here too, it is the women characters who run the show. Be it the very popular 'Taarak Mehta ka Oolta chashma', with it's hilarious Daya, or FIR with the hot favourite Chandramukhi Chautala, women are the show stoppers.

It is Archana of 'Pavitra Rishta', Mona of 'Ram milayi Jodi', Simar of 'Sasural Simar ka', Radhika of 'Choti Bahu', Suhaani of 'Sasural Genda Phool' and other lady protagonists, who undoubtedly rule the small screen, and enjoy phenomenal popularity as compared to their male counterparts.

Women rule

No matter what the genre, the domination of women is evident on the small screen. One of the main reason is obviously the fact that women are the main target audience. The women oriented subjects and women dominated cast ensures that the serials lure the target audience.

With movie and sports channels catering to the men and a variety of cartoon channels for the kids, the general entertainment channels target the women. Apart from a few reality shows thrown in here and there, most of the shows are purely 'for the women and by the women.' And this ploy has definitely worked for the channels. And for all those women who run the show!
