Memory Loss Leads To Highest TRPs
When you don't know how to go about the story further, go for a tried and tested formula of an accident followed by the lead losing his or her memory. After the death of this formula in Bollywood films, it seems to have been reborn on Indian television.
This age old funda, works very well on television and has been recently seen in shows like 'Sasuraal Genda Phool', 'Sanjog Se Bani Sangini', 'Chhoti Bahu', 'Pyar Ki Ek Kahani', and a little while ago, in 'Pavitra Rishta'. The most recent add-on to this list is the serial 'Geet Hui Sabse Parayi' wherein the lead actor Maan (GurmeetChoudhary) loses his memory and Geet (Drashti Dhami) has to fight hard to bring it back.
The common element about all these serials is that, the character goes through a partial memory loss with makes him forget only the past one or two years of his life!
A regular television viewer said, "It is a done-to-death concept. Agar koi show nahin dekh raha toh kuch aisa kar do jo logon ne expect nahin kiya hoga. Why can't they dare to think out of the box? Is it that tough? Ishaan's partial memory loss in
"Sasural Genda Phool" which makes him forget only his wife is too weird. But people still watch the show and its TRPs remain unaffected."
Where is the creativity of the makers to come up with something actually 'unexpected'? Every show on television begins with the promise of being original and different. But after few months the makers just seems to clueless as to how to take the show forward. All the shows after a certain point of time end up reaching on that on track.
Then why do people watch these shows when it has nothing new to offer? Answers Suhana aka Ragini Khanna, "This concept may have been shown earlier too, but it has never been dealt with in such a light-hearted way, as was done in "Sasuraal Genda Phool". We don't make the viewers cry, even though Ishaan is suffering from amnesia. The key goal is to iron out the differences."
After every memory loss, what results is blissful. The differences get solved, the characters get closer and some happy scenes follow. This relation between lose of memory resulting to the increase in viewership makes a very bankable and effortless solution for dropping TRPs.
