Cinema and politics

South Indian Cinema (especially Kollywood) and Politics have always been associated for many decades. The production of movies were influenced highly by the Politicians and it seemed as if the politicians were reigning the cinema industry. However with the change of regime, will the South Indian Cinema see a change? πŸ€”

From the former CM of Tamil Nadu, MGR, to the previuos CM, Kalaigner, a script writer, to the current CM, Jeyalalitha, Tamil Nadu's present CM.. all have been entered into politics after reigning the film industry.

The trend seems to continue with many past and present heros forming their own parities.
The list includes, Former Nadigarsangam President Vijayakanth (the current Opposition Leader), Current Nadigarsangam president Sharathkumar, Arun Pnadiyan, who have been succesffuly won the race and have attained the seats as MPs (??).

Many other actors including actor Vijay, Karthick, Senthil and all have their own politic parties.

Should Politicians be allowed to influence the Cinema Industry? If yes, then should their influence be restricted? On the other hand, what will the members of the current Cinema Industry gain from their invovled? Will this produce a positive or a negative outcome for Cinema as a whole?

I am sure this is not just in Tamil Nadu but also other south states so would love to hear everyones inputs regs this topic😳

Thank you for such an interesting topic daa Melz πŸ‘πŸ‘.  Yes Cinema and Tamil Nadu Pollitics, especially has a strong connection.  Many of the political party leaders themselves hail from the industry, and most importantly, due to this connection, we often can spot the political leaders at the weddings of film personalities πŸ˜›.

So here is an article I read recently, just a day before the topic was posted on this 😲:

Thangar Bachchan's request to Jayalalitha

Director Thangar Bachchan has a request to make to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalitha. The filmmaker has said that the CM should intervene and ensure that anyone who is willing to make a movie can do so without hindrance and release it without any problems.

The director said that during the last regime, several experienced and noted producers found it difficult to produce films due to monopolization. He rued that many film studios went vacant for want of work. Thangar Bachchan said that he hoped such issues will be resolved in the near future.

Monopolization was surely evident during the last regime with only a few reigning the industry.  However only time will tell if things will change for the betters with the a new regime taking over, though I strongly believe that the very few who reigned the industry may no longer be able to repeat the same again.

In the meantime, many of the verteran actors are showing interest in politics.  Except a handful, the rest are somehow associated with a political party.  Though the exact notion is not known, one would expect  this to play a key role in their success in Cinema (via production, direction, and or acting), as well as political arena.  There are many examples:

Kushboo resigns

The President of the Chinna Thirai Artistes Association, Kushboo resigned from her post. She gave her resignation to the Association members and thanked them for extending their support during her tenure. Kushboo had cited her busy shooting schedules to be the reason for her resignation.

However, sources in the industry say that Kushboo resigned from the post following the landslide victory of the AIADMK. She joined the DMK just last year. Before joining the DMK, she was hosting a popular television game show telecasted by the Jaya TV, which is considered to be a mouthpiece of the AIADMK.

In some cases, any actors speaking against the ruling party come under threat as well.  With many party leaders hailing from the cinema industry, perhaps many of the film personalities involve themselves to a great extend.

However, with regards to the questions, the political parties or rather the ruling regime should not get too involved with cinema and also should not impose too many restrictions.  Cinema is an art, by which people try to bring out the talents as well as to portray a message (though the latter rarely occures now a days with many commercial movies).  As long as the film makers abide by the genral rules, their political interest or lack of support for a particular party should not restrict them from successfully completing their tasks.  This is a democratic country and people have the freedom of speech, so their political decisions should not affect their professional front.  If the politicians involvement continue to sore in the industry, then the industry may miss out on many good cinema, and we may lose the real meaning of this profession.  Just my two cents 😳.  No offence meant to anyone!
