Tara
handed her boss his usual cup of steaming coffee with a collection of
six top newspapers. He picked up the Times first, as the glaring
headlines vied for his attention.
Eligible Bachelorettes of 2010
Janhavi Mehra tops the list for the second time!
His
throat ran dry, and he sipped his coffee, nursing the warm cup in his
hands. Tara stood in front of him, unable to ascertain the reason of the
changing expression on his face. As she looked down at the article of
his interest, she felt shocked. She had not glanced through that part of
the news, as the headlines of the main article, regarding drug
trafficking in Mumbai had required her to do some research for her boss'
interest.
He
silently ignored the article. Not even a crease on his refined face
changed, as he studied the news report regarding the drug trafficking
with great interest.
"Taara,
this report has some new names. Will you run them through the
database?" he asked, handing the newspaper with circled names.
In
normal circumstances she would have taken the paper alongwith her, but
today she merely noted down the names he had pointed out in her diary,
and walked out of the door, even though she had already run them up in
the database.
He looked at the article again and thanked for the solitary atmosphere.

Janhavi Mehra
Social Standing: Owner of Mehra Group of Industries
Occupation: Investigator, Special Squad
A
recluse from the social circuit, and fiercely protective of her private
life, she was spotted at the Destination Eleven, a popular club some
months ago, an insider claimed, putting her on the list again. Even her
choice of profession, one of her quirks, does not fail to charm the
acquaintances. The only daughter of Mehra, she presides the Board of
Directors, but fails to hold an active position in the Mehra Group of
Industries. Biju Mehra, the other founder of the group holds higher
stakes and shares than her, and runs some of the ventures. She was
engaged to the upcoming CitiInvest Regional Head Vishwas Sinha three
years ago. They parted only after six months with mutual consent.
Currently she is single, and as the source reported on her sighting in
Destination Eleven, ready to mingle. She was seen with an unidentified
young man. Any guesses?
Diya Hari
Social Standing: Owner of JM Stud Farms…
He kept down the paper and reached for his cell phone.
'6 missed calls' It read. All were from Janhavi.
He took a deep breath as he dialed her number.
She picked it up after a single ring, as though she had been waiting for his call. Somehow, he felt elated.
"Hey. Phone kiya tha?"
"Hmm…yeah…Kya tumne…Silly question. Kya tumne aaj ka paper dekha?"
"Haan. Abhi padh raha hoon." He said, carefully controlling his voice.
"Oh."
"I did read the news report, if you mean that."
"Oh." The relief in her voice was discernable. She was glad that he had brought up the subject.
"Tumne kabhi…bataya nahi…." He said sunnily, as if he was saying it in passing.
Junhui's forehead creased. "See.Can we meet?"
"No. No I don't think so."
"What?" her voice was soft with disbelief.
"It's
okay. I understand. I don't think we will be able to meet. Press to
tumhare peeche padi hogi. And I am going away this week."
"Oh." The dejection in her voice squeezed his heart. "Maybe next week?" she asked eagerly.
"Maybe." He answered vaguely.
Even
after the conversation had long ended, he kept looking at the photo in
his cell phone, and then at the techincoloured picture in the news
paper.
Everything explained itself…The opening night at Destination Eleven….The large bungalow…the periodic absences…..
The day changed into dusk and then dawn.
Parth Mathur did not sleep a wink.
"Promise me that…you will never change….Just…remain like this, okay?"
He typed on…
Explains
a lot I guess. I'm not a gold digger after her wealth; I've enough of
my own. How can I say anything, when I now know that she is the most
eligible bachelorette for this year? How can I? We are from two
different worlds, and the sooner I accept this, the better.
She is better off now….as a friend…nothing more..
