Socialism is mostly based on the proletariat to gain ownership over the bourgeoisie, and that all the nation's resources be shifted from the urban areas to the peasants in the countryside, and by everything I mean everything, industrialization, ownership of land, as seen in early Soviet ideology or perhaps even Maoism with the Great Leap Forward etc...
Communism is more of a utopian or a more extreme form of socialism per se, that standardizes income distribution among all citizens, among other things...yes, there are similarities like you said, both believe in private ownership of land...but there certainly are differences. Also, what I have noticed is that communism often digresses to violence & totalitarian regimes, meanwhile socialism is relatively more stable. For example, when India was independent, Nehru himself initiated state-sponsored industrialization(aka socialism) on the country, which was in fact very beneficial for the nation.
