I just love the Bhagonwali Song. The lyrics are spread across several episodes. There are various stanzas of the song for various different situations and moods. The lyricist Dhananjay Masoom and Aakash Pandey have done a great job writing these beautiful lyrics.

The lyrics are so beautiful and so meaningful that I thought I will capture them, in this thread. And also try my best to provide the meaning for the sake of non-Hindi folks.

These are in the order they appeared in the show. So, this will be an on-going effort. I know a lot of the feeling would be lost in translation, so if anyone wants to share their thoughts on the lyrics or if you think I have not done enough justice with the translation please pitch in.

I have been wanting to do this for a long long time since I started watching this show. Finally here they are:

6th Dec 2010
(Introduction of Runjhun - The Bhagonwali)

Oh laaga kadi dhoop ma chaanv
jaise sahera ma ho gaanv
laaga kadi dhoop ma chaanv
jaise sahera ma ho gaanv
U na baantath kismis kheer
Baante bas aapan taqdeer
Tu Hai Bhagonwali, Humari Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali humari Bhagonwali

Feels coolness of a shadow, under a scalding sun
As if city has turned into a village [meaning: as if city has left its sophistication and turned into a simplistic place]
She doesn't distribute pudding laced with nuts
she just distribute her own fortunes
She is a fortunate girl, Our fortunate girl
Fortunate one, she is our fortunate one

Jhar jhar u girath jharnan jaisi
phir bhi na kasak paale mann ma
til til jalke deeyan jaisi
apno ka ghar rosan karde
u hai bhagonwali, Humari bhagonwali
Bhagonwali Humari bhagonwali

She flows jhar-jhar like a stream,
Yet she do not harbor any bad thoughts in her heart.
Like lamp burns itself,
she radiates light in the lives of people who are hers
She is a fortunate girl, our fortunate girl,
Fortunate one, she is our fortunate one.

*jhar-jhar is the sound that comes out when a stream flows and falls over the rocks in its path.

8th Dec 2010
(She doing all the chores at home)
2nd stanza 'Jhar jhar u girath jharnan jaisi' repeated in this episode.

9th Dec 2010
(When Lakhan Mishra and his wife are (almost) kidnapping her)

Deeyan se bhichadkar ke lou chali,
Kushboo se bhchadkar ke phulwan,
Deeyan se bhichadkar ke lou chali,
Kushboo se bhchadkar ke phulwan,
dhakhan se bhichadkar ke saans chali,
ankhiyan se bhichad ke sapnan,
O ri Bhagonwali, tu kaisan bhagonwali
Bhagonwali tu kaisan bhagonwali
Bhagonwali tu kaisan Bhagonwali

Flame is going away leaving the lamp,
Flower away from its perfume,
Breath is going away leaving the heartbeat,
Dream away from the eyes,
She is (supposed to be) the fortunate one, how is she the fortunate one
Fortunate one, how she is a fortunate one

===============
16th Dec 2010
(She getting ready, to be shown to the prospective groom)

Chamki hai ankhiyan mein, ek aas motiyan se
O mehek pade hai manwa, phoolon ke bagiyan se
O dar ke baad hai aayi subh gadiyan jeevan mein
Humari... Bhagonwali ... O humari Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali O humari Bhagonwali

There is Sparkle in the eyes, a desire from a pearl
Heart seems to have been scented from the flower of the garden
After so late good times seems to have come in life
(In) our fortunate girl('s life), She is our fortunate girl
Fortunate one, O she is our fortunate one.

17th Dec 2010
(Her alliance with the groom does not happen)

Kaanch sa chan se toote mannwa, O mann dil kunThaaye (Is this word correct?)
Bandh mutti ke pal anmol, Ret sa phisala jaaye
aapan bhaag ko kaise badale, Kudh ko kaise suljaayein
O ri Bhagonwali, Tu kaisan Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali Tu kaisan Bhagonwali

Heart seems to have broken just as (if it were) glass, Heart seems to be limping? [I am not sure of the 2nd part]
Like from the clentched fits, precious time seems to be slipping away like sand
How (can she) change her fortune, how could she resolve (her unknown issues)
She is the fortunate one, How is she the fortunate one
Fortunate one, how are you the fortunate one?

22nd Dec 2011
(When she is dragged by Kalsanwali and ordered to go ask Guddu for the money)

Kaahe joda dukh se naata
kaahe choda tum sukh ka saath
kaahe sab saheti saagar banke
kaahe sab sunti paathar banke
kaahe aisa tera bhaag
kaahe aisa tera bhaag
O ri Bhagonwali, Tu kaisan Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali tu kaisan bhagonwali

Why this unity with sadness,
Why (is she) deprived of happiness
Why (does she) bear all like an ocean [The way ocean takes in everything without complaint]
Why (does she) listen everything like a rock
Why is her fortune like this
Look there she is, the fortunate one, how is she the fortunate one
Fortunate one, how is she the fortunate one?

23rd Dec 2010
(Contemplating whether to go to Guddu to ask for money)

kaise daav pe kudh ko laga de
kaise paas paar bhaDha de (I couldn't get this one properly)
sau baar poocha mann ka Bhaag(?) (couldn't get this one properly too)
kudh ko kaise daaga de
Tu kaahe Bhagonwali
Tu kaahe Bhagonwali
Tu kaahe Bhagonwali
Tu kaahe Bhagonwali

How to be offered herself as the martyr/pawn (in this game)
How to cross the threshold (of safety) (Is this what it means?)
Heart seems to be asking a 100 times  (No, idea if this line is right!)
How are you going to betray yourself
What kind of a fortunate girl are you.

23rd Dec 2010
(Finally she decides to go)

Kaahe nahin pat jaati dharthi
Kaahe nahin usse gale lagathi

Why doesn't the earth tear apart
Why doesn't it embrace (and consume) her

(Here the feelings are, that, it is better to die than having to go through this disgrace.)

23rd Dec 2010, 28th Dec 2010
(23rd Dec 2010 - Guddu wins the carrom game)
(28th Dec 2010 - When Guddu's ball misses the pot that is kept for making perfume)

Tu hai Bhagonwali
Humari Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali Humari Bhagonwali

You are fortunate girl, our fortunate girl
fortunate one, you are our fortunate one

23rd Dec 2010
(When she is cleaning Guddu's CD & Carrom centre)

Dharti se pooche yaa ambar se
Sab tarse tere chaanv ke
Dard se pooche ya kushi se
sab tarse tere bhaag ke
Phir kaahe na bhare hai pyaale(?)
apne bhoj na paanke(?)
O ri Bhagonwali, tu kaisan Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali tu kaisan Bhagonwali

Whether one asks the earth or the sky
(I would know that) everyone would long for your shade
Whether (I) ask (someone in) pain or joy
(I would know that) everyone would crave for your fortunes
Then why your life is not filled with the fortunes
so that you are rid of your burden
And you are the fortunate girl, how are you the fortunate one
Fortunate one, oh you are (supposed to be) the fortunate one

24th Dec 2010
(She is preparing medicine for herself)

Patta patta pis jaaye, rang laaye mehndan jaisan
Boota boota toot jaaye, jud jaaye sargam jaisan
O ri Bhagonwali Tu kaisan Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali Tu kaisan Bhagonwali

Like each henna leaf undergoes severe grind prior to giving out the color
Like each flower gets chopped from its shrub/plant to make a garland
That is how she is our fortunate one, What kind of a fortunate one is she
Fortunate one, look how is our fortunate one.

27th Dec 2010
(After she comes back from police station giving false complaint on Guddu)

Mann ma bista(?) jaaye chala
Haaye abhaagan kyaa kar daala
kaisan jee hai aaj, kasera
chak kar jooth ka ek nivala
O ri Bhagonwali Tu kaisan Bhagonwali
O ri Bhagonwali Tu kaisan Bhagonwali

There is deep wound in the heart
O God! what have you done, the unfortunate girl
How have you lived today
after tasting the 1st lie
Hey you the fortunate girl, how are you the Bhagonwali

29th Dec 2010
(When she goes to police station to take back the complaint)

Daag se maili chadariya
pochan ko chali banwariya
baantan ko chai hai woh chaaya
banke tapti duphehriya
Humari Bhagonwali, Tu kaisi Bhagonwali
Humari Bhagonwali, Tu kaisi Bhagonwali

Crazy girl, has gone to clean the dishonor she attained
She has gone to distribute shade, while she herself is burning under the sun
This is how our fortunate girl is, what kind of a fortunate girl are you?
Our Girl, what kind of fortunes are yours.

3rd Feb 2011, 14th July 2011
Ankhiyan Saawan Bhaado barase
Ansuan jaisan ganga re
har aas bhi jal kar basm hui sapane bhi raakh hai saare re
Ab kis chaukat maatha teke har aur ghane andhiyaare

Eyes seem to be flowing out tears like rain
Tear flowing like river, ganga.
Each hope burnt and each dream turned into ash
Where to go to pray now, everywhere it looks dark.

Mann-wa peed samandar jaisan
gadh gayo kaa heev ke jaisan
bhudo karke jal gayo dil
raakh bhayo koi naa jaisan
tu kaahe bhagonwali
tu kaahe bhagonwali
tu kaahe bhagonwali
tu kaahe bhagonwali

The pain in the heart is so deep like an ocean
that it has gotten struck in the heart.
It has engulfed and has burnt the heart
that such an ash was never seen before.

Apnan ki bheed ma...Tu Dhondhehi koi Apna
Khaabo ki needh ma...Tu Dhondhe koi Sapna
Tu Rahe Sabke Saath... Per nahin tere koi sang
Rango ki dhoopma...Tu lage hai berang
O ri...Bhagonwali...
Tu Kasan Bhagonwali
Bhagonwali...Tu Kasan Bhagonwali

In a crowd of your own you search for someone to call your own.
In your sleep you search for a particular dream.
You support everyone but no one is with you.
In a colorful world, you are colorless.
You... are the Bhagonwali.
How are you the Bhagonwali?
Bhagonwali...How are you the Bhagonwali?

p.s: There were few words I couldn't get and some I couldn't understand the meaning. I have highlighted them in red. Please offer guidance.
Also, do point out mistakes. I don't want people to get the wrong meaning.

Thank you.

Bee, you rock.

I love the Bhagonwali song and whoever sings it has a perfect voice to carry the song.  I recently asked Wafah if there was a rip available for the title song.  Since there is none, this will do for me.

I know it is a lot of work for you, but I am going to be selfish and say, please keep going.

Edit:  Sometimes Zee posts on their website as a download, but it is not available for Bhagonwali.

Since variations of this song is spread out across episodes, it is impossible to get it in one piece...

Gardes,
I do not know how to rip the song. That is the reason why I gave the episodes dates so that someone can do that, until I learn how to do it myself.
It would be nice if all the stanzas are stringed together and made into 1 long song that I can listen  repeated.

Bhavni,
  Glad to be of help.

Edit: One of the singers is Sapna Awasthi. There are others too, but I do not know the names.

Thank you so much for this project. I am Bengali, so do not understand Hindi that well. The work that you Gardes, Wafah, Infofan, Rani, Uzee, EcliPSe_2010, Bhavni, K_S etc do to help us appreciate the nuances of this story is soo appreciated.

The dialogue is so nuanced in this show and the words that are chosen convey the various shades of meaning.

Bee: I had no idea that the song is so complex and that it has so many meanings of the effect of one girl on one man and those around her.

I like that in the first stanza, it has the image of shade and calm. Also in the second stanza you mention a stream that enters people's lives. In its simple form it changes the landscape around it in an irrevocable nature.

The moment that  in the show that to me most poignantly expresses RJ's calm like effect on Guddu so far is when Guddu is agitated after  he forces K. to eat the spicy samosa and he goes to the Carom club and is complaining about women to Jabbu and company. Then when he sees RJ going up the steps, his eyes become calm and he rests his head a bit on the wall as he watches her.  Himanshoo's very eyes and shoulder changes. She is like that shade in his life.

Other stanzas that you have written are much darker, but to me represent the unknown that RJ has to face. She is lucky also when she goes into the unknown and conquers her pre-suppositions and fears.
Every move when she goes towards Guddu, or associates with him on a level that is not comfortable to her is one when her luck is questioned. How is she the fortunate girl?  It is not clear why certain things are happening to her. What is there to learn? To see? One has to make one's own luck sometimes

This expresses the changes that she needs to go through (see Guddu for who he is), see situations for what they really are (the light under the seeming dark) and change herself in some ways. How are her seemingly most darkest times actually her most fortunate? That the CV's have to show us.  How many times does she have to cross a threshold, step over a line, to experience her own happiness?

Therefore she is lucky in that she effects others, but she is also lucky that she is forced into situations that require her to change. If she can see the negatives as times to change herself then that is where she becomes lucky.

Ahhh if we were all so lucky! 😊

Bee, I'll try to listen to some of the scenes tonight and get back to you about what words I hear in the song and what I think it means... though not sure if my ears/translation are the best 😆 but I'll try.

JP,
  You are very welcome.

Actually I am doing it for myself too. I like the song and would like to sing while doing my house chores.  But I did not know the wordings correctly. Now I can listen, write, read and keep it my mind ðŸ˜ƒ

Some of the parallels you are drawing from the lyrics to the scenes are excellent! Seems like the meaning helped in igniting your imaginations. I am glad.

So much feel is contained in those lyrics, I felt people who enjoy the show should know those feelings. (Mainly those who do not know Hindi). Only then one can completely appreciate and enjoy the show.
