Why Is The Vampire Diaries' Klaus Sitting Pretty?

Joseph Morgan "In the beginning, Klaus and Kol start off more on the same page, but Kol definitely comes in with his own objectives and motives," Morgan says. "They do end up at odds and issuing threats at each other and it does become quite serious." Klaus' relationship with Rebekah, though, is a little more complicated. "Klaus is the one who daggered her and he's really used her in a way that's unforgivable. They have both attempted to exploit each other, but are also bound by this love and his feeling of wanting to protect her from her own weaknesses. So it's all mixed up in there like a big old wasp's nest of emotions."

Vanessa: Got any more scoop on Twilight star Charlie Bewley's role on The Vampire Diaries? I'm so excited to see him on the show!
Bewley will debut as Vaughn in the CW series' 13th episode and let's just say he's got his sights set on the Salvatore brothers. You see, he's a hunter, one of The Five, to be exact, and like Connor, he's pretty damn good at his job. Expect an interesting first meeting between Vaughn and Damon that will only show off just how much Damon cares for Elena.

Vampire Diaries "After School Special" Official Description

REBEKAH IS BACK WITH A VENGEANCE — Appearing unexpectedly at Mystic Falls High, Rebekah (Claire Holt) wastes no time trying to force Stefan (Paul Wesley), Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) to answer her questions about the search for a cure, leading to a bombshell piece of information from Elena. When Bonnie's (Kat Graham) father, Rudy Owens (guest star Rick Worthy, "Supernatural"), accepts the role of Interim Mayor, he makes it a priority to protect his daughter, who isn't at all comfortable with the role he suddenly wants to play in her life. Professor Shane (guest star David Alpay) continues to encourage Bonnie to believe in her powers, but he soon finds himself in danger when he reveals too much to the wrong person. Later, Caroline does her best to comfort Tyler (Michael Trevino) after a violent confrontation. Meanwhile, at the lake house, Damon and Matt (Zach Roerig) train Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), trying to raise his game as a hunter, but Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is impatient with their progress and intervenes to speed up the process. David Von Ancken directed the episode written by Brett Matthews (#410).

Vampire Diaries Synopsis For Season 4, Episode 10: "After School Special" — A New Mayor and Rebekah's Return

Mystic Falls is wasting no time replacing Carol Lockwood (RIP) in the Season 4 mid-season premiere, "After School Special."

If Caroline thought having her mom as the town sheriff was bad, just wait until Bonnie learns that her newly-returned papa will be stepping in as Interim Mayor. Rudy Owens (portrayed by Supernatural's Rick Worthy) breezes back into town, and you'd better believe he's there to protect his daughter from the dangers that be (not that Bonnie's all too thrilled about it).

Meanwhile, Klaus is dealing with his own family reunion, as Rebekah's back in action and looking to take some serious revenge. When she pushesStefanElena, and Caroline for info on the cure, Elena reveals a shocking piece of information.

But Rebekah's not the only one causing Klaus to toss and turn during the night. When Damon and Matt's efforts to boost Jeremy's vamp-hunting skills don't go as planned, the OV steps in to speed up the process.

Later, Tyler finds himself in a wee bit of trouble — but of course, everyone's favorite blonde vamp (not you, Rebekah), is there to lend a helping hand.

Vampire Diaries Boss on Stefan's Anger, Jeremy's Killer Urges and Caroline and Tyler's Future
Death, break-ups and some killer urges plagued The Vampire Diaries winter finale earlier this month.

After the eventful episode, TVLine spoke with executive producer Julie Plec about the loss of Tyler's mom, Damon and Elena's struggles and the future of Caroline and Klaus.

TVLINE | Damon did break the sire bond, sort of, but it was a little too late where Stefan's concerned. What does that mean for their relationship?
That's unfortunate. Damon was a little bit late in his realization that he was being selfish and needed to do the right thing by Stefan. The jig is up as far as Stefan's awareness of what Elena and Damon have been up to. It's not going to be pretty. Stefan is heartbroken. He feels incredibly betrayed and angry. We're going to see a lot of his point of view as we move forward.

TVLINE | From the promos, it looks like Stefan also lashes out at Elena.
Yeah. He's pissed. [Laughs] When the break-up is civil, it's usually the beginning of some pretty dark stuff still to come. The calmer the break-up, the worse the fallout.

TVLINE | Tyler's grown a lot this season. Will recent events help him mature further or set him back?
It's a setback in that his confidence came from this feeling that he had a place and he had people that were looking to him. As his mom said, "You're a leader of people like your father was." He was really growing into that, and to feel like they all paid the price for that confidence will definitely set him back a bit. The question is, how will he rebound from that?

TVLINE | Are Caroline and Tyler OK?
Tyler's going to struggle, and Caroline's going to struggle in trying to help him. But if there's one thing those two have proven again and again, it's that when situations are at their most dire and their most extreme, they find a way to be there for each other. I think we can rest easy that that won't have changed yet.

TVLINE | Klaus is a great bad guy, and Joseph [Morgan] has said in the past that he doesn't want to soften him up too much. But at some point, for the longevity of the character, does he have to soften up?
The beauty of Klaus, much like Damon, is that his horrible misdeeds are all born out of a place of a complete lack of trust and faith as a result of being repeatedly betrayed and rejected in his life. I'm not saying I excuse his horrific behavior, but it's born from a very human place. Once someone's got a strong core of humanity, there's hope for them – [they may] just not necessarily wake up tomorrow as Man of the Year. Klaus will continue to be a very complicated character. Much like Damon in the first couple seasons, when he feels backed up against the wall, he lashes out in very, very destructive ways. It makes it impossible to forgive. And yet, the redemption of Klaus as a character-long arc is something we always talk about.

TVLINE | What is Shane's journey in the next chapter?
Shane is the captain of the crazy train in the next chapter, which is really all about revealing more about his agenda, learning more about this mythical character of Silas that he keeps mentioning, getting closer and closer to the location and the means to dig up both the cure and Silas — and then the fallout of that choice and what that all means.

TVLINE | When you introduced April, my first thought was, "Love interest for Jeremy." Is that safely out of the question now that we see that she's got a lot more to do with the mythology and Rebekah's storyline?
Yeah, in April's current situation, romance and roses are not necessarily instantly on her horizon.

TVLINE | There was a Jeremy/Bonnie moment in the winter finale. Is that a romance that picks back up?
It's in there to remind us that they had a history together that was really deep and important. For Bonnie to be Jeremy's emotional touchstone and to find a closeness with each other that was abruptly shattered back in Season 3 definitely brings up memories of that relationship and makes us wonder if there's any road for them to travel together.

TVLINE | How is Jeremy going to be dealing with controlling his hunter urges?
He's going to be a hardcore, lean and mean vampire-fighting machine over the next couple episodes – but with an unlikely coach in the form of Damon Salvatore. So there's some fun to be had there and a lot of danger for both of them. … They're definitely going to have to figure out how to get that mark to grow. Damon's not going to just unleash Jeremy into the vampire den until he feels like he's properly trained and ready.

TVLINE | The next episode is kind of Breakfast Club-y. Who's trapped together, and what emotions does it bring out?
It has a lot to do with what Rebekah's up to. She's been gone for quite some time. She's missed a lot. So [in] her efforts to try to get information out of everybody…she gets caught up on the goings-on in Mystic Falls in her absence, including that Stefan and Elena are broken up, that Elena slept with Damon, that there's a sire bond at play, that the cure hasn't been found yet – all kinds of great things which she gets out of them in the form of a pretty malicious detention at school.

Catch Me If You Can (EP411), January 24th.

A NEW DANGER — Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is furious when Klaus (Joseph Morgan) tries to control him by putting Matt's (Zach Roerig) life in danger. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) coaches Jeremy as he prepares to take on Klaus' new vampires, but they find that Kol (guest star Nathaniel Buzolic) has beaten them to it. Kol makes it clear that he will stop at nothing to convince everyone to give up the search for the cure. Looking for a new ally, Rebekah (Claire Holt) reminds Stefan (Paul Wesley) that they were once close friends. When Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) and Mayor Hopkins (guest star Rick Worthy) question Shane (guest star David Alpay) about his involvement in the Founders' Council deaths, Bonnie (Kat Graham) steps in with questions of her own, and Shane's responses push Bonnie to the edge of her powers. Elena (Nina Dobrev) negotiates with Klaus to keep Jeremy safe, but when danger suddenly appears from a totally unexpected enemy, Elena comes up with her own daring plan for Jeremy.

The Vampire Diaries Spoilers: Julie Plec On Elena's Emotional Struggle

The Vampire Diaries Showrunner, Julie Plec, recently spoiled to Hollywood about the upcoming emotional fallout that will engulf Elena when TVD returns January 17th.

"Elena's mindset is basically a combination of feeling a sense of loss of not being able to be around Damon and also this profound sense of guilt for how much she's hurt Stefan." Don't forget about the third man in her life, though: her brother, Jeremy. "Equal to that, a protectiveness of Jeremy," Plec adds. "She's feeling very unsettled that she's not there where he is in helping him go through the motions to uncover the rest of his hunter marks. So she's got a lot that she's concerned about. In the midst of all of it, she's still wondering, are these [true] feelings she's feeling [for Damon]? They feel so real. What is going on with me?"

How will Stefan handle his breakup with Elena when The Vampire Diaries returns? — Julia
NATALIE:
It depends on how you look at it. Stefan definitely spirals a bit when
he realizes the depth of Elena's feelings for Damon. But he'll drown his sorrows with the help of a hot blonde. But which hot blonde?

'The Vampire Diaries' first look: Elena gets trapped in the library with Stefan and Caroline

"After School Special" takes a cue from "The Breakfast Club," trapping many of our major players in the library and forcing them to confront some tricky issues. Of course, Mystic Falls High School is much more prone to death and destruction than your average Hughesian setting -- and since Rebekah's the one who has locked them in, you know things are going to get dangerous quickly. To say she's angry is an understatement, and she's not one to manage that in a healthy manner.

Elsewhere in the episode, we'll see that the death of yet another mayor has left a void in the town's political structure. Bonnie's MIA father, Rudy (Rick Worthy) steps in for the interim, so we'll finally see more of Bonnie's family life and learn just how far her father is willing to go to protect her in an increasingly dangerous environment. She's balancing his role in her life with Professor Shane's (David Alpay).

Meanwhile, back at the Lake House, Damon is helping to train Jeremy and work on killing enough vampires to complete his tattoo. Klaus isn't the most patient person, though, especially given his recent slaughter of his hybrid "family." He puts Matt in significant danger in an attempt to motivate Jeremy. (Never underestimate the bonds of bromance.)
