Exclusive First Look: Aunt Jenna Makes Her Return to Vampire Diaries

Elena could probably use some adult guidance these days on The Vampire Diaries, so what better time for a visit from Aunt Jenna? We've got your exclusive first look at the fan favorite's return in the Season 3 finale (airing May 10 at 9/8c on The CW.)

But if you recall, Elena's former guardian is dead ' RIP ' so her portrayer Sara Canning will appear in flashbacks as "Elena, going through a particularly rough time, reflects back on a [period] in her life when things were much more simple," describes executive producer Julie Plec. That means we'll also see the young Gilbert bonding with her mom, Miranda (guest star Erin Beute, center), in the episode.

General

  • This is the last episode the Season 3's final part: The Bloodline Chapter.
  • This episode will feature flashbacks to the night the Gilbert's car drove offWickery Bridge and Elena's parents were killed.
  • This episode has the flashback closer to the present (Months before thePilot).
  • Veiwers will find out who is behind The Darkness in this episode. Here*^

Continuity

Behind the Scenes

  • The Departed is the title of the 2006 Academy Award-winning American action thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese.
  • Elena will finally make a choice between Damon and Stefan.
  • Lana Del Ray's song Blue Jeans will be featured in flashbacks.[citation needed]
  • Filming began on March 23, and ended on April 2.[1]
  • According to Nina Dobrev a few people will die in this episode.
  • The title refers to all those who Elena has lost over the years, starting with her parents and continuing through Aunt Jenna.
  • A new pseudo villain will be introduced in this episode. [2]
  • Joseph Morgan has claimed that the Season 3 finale will be "epic".
  • Candice Accola recently admitted that she cried reading the script for the finale.
  • This episode will have an underwater scene, featuring Elena GilbertStefan SalvatoreMiranda Sommers-Gilbert and Grayson Gilbert.
  • We will see Damon telling Elena the first time he laid eyes on her knowing she wasnt Katherine.
  • According to Ian Somerhalder (in a Spoiler Chat Daily article), we can expect some Delena goodness in the season finale and we will also see how much Damon really cares about Elena.
  • According to TV Guide, Ian Somerhalder has said, "What's interesting about what's happening right now is the dynamic between the brothers. They are starting to really bond. A tease about the episode coming up is really about these brothers overcoming their disdain for each other and ultimately realizing that family is really embedded into the fabric of who we are and if you can connect with that it's really powerful."
  • In an interview, Joseph Morgan said that the season 3 finale will shed some light on past events that happened in season 1, and Ian Somerhalder said something happens between Damon and Elena that he never thought of as Damon[3]
  • There will be a massive, unexpected death in this episode.
  • When he spoke to TV Guide, he spilled that Damon and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are going to share a moment in the finale. "It's ridiculously emotional … [the] scene with Damon and Elena and it was a very, very introspective scene that brought me back to the beginning of the show." Co-star Joseph Morgan (Klaus) thinks viewers will get a sense of dj vu as well, saying certain aspects of the episode will "shed some light on events that go way back to the beginning of the first season."
  • Joseph Morgan said that the last 20 seconds of the finale with leave fans with their hearts in their mouth, and they will be wishing time will fast forward to season 4. He also said that there is so much shock, that the finale will change the world of The Vampire Diaries forever.http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/04/10-spoilers-a-vampire-diaries-cliffhanger---a-james-van-der-beek-kiss-in-apartment-23---and-more.html
  • Julie Plec said we will finally see who is behind The Darkness.
  • Stefan brings in an old ally.
  • According to TVLine, executive producer Julie Plec has said "confusion" is "the key word...for Elena." She needs to figure out what she feels for each of them, and spending time with one and then the other does seem to be a pretty good way for her to do that. This is all leading up to her making a choice, and Plec says "the big thing with her choice is she's not the one in complete control of it." This is "really a decision about what does love mean to me and to us and where are we supposed to be in our lives with each other." It does seem about time for her to make that decision, and considering everything that's happened between her and each vampire, it would be surprising if she wasn't confused. What will her decision mean for everyone in season 4?
  • According to TV Guide, Stefan and Damon are going to be trying to figure out how "to contain Klaus" since they can't exactly just kill him. They don't know if killing him would lead to their deaths since Kol killed the vampire who could at least give them a clue as to which bloodline they're part of. Besides, they already know that killing Klaus would definitely kill Tyler, but as Caroline had told Tyler, Damon didn't exactly care about that if he had found out he wasn't in the hybrid's bloodline. At least now it's looking like it's likely that Tyler will be safe, unless they get new information.

InterviewEdit

Julie Plec: The season finale β€” which will feature a flashback to the car accident that killed Elena's parents, when Stefan first saw her and rescued her from the water below Wickery Bridge β€” will find Elena making a decision about her feelings for the Salvatore Brothers. "It will not be easy. It will be very emotional for both sides because it's going to be a very honest, very pure, very difficult decision. Hopefully if we've done our jobs right with Elena's character over the season, we'll understand why she's making the decision that she's making and how that decision is meant to be right for where she is in her life right now." Did Plec cry writing the finale? "I cried many, many times. I haven't seen it yet. I have no idea if that ended up on the screen. I don't want to brag," she laughs. "But it was a very, very emotional experience writing the finale, for a lot of reasons, one of which has already been talked about in the press. We do flashback to a time when Elena's parents were still alive and when she was a cheerleader dating Matt, the football player, and before Bonnie knew she was a witch and thought she was just uncannily psychically available to predict fashion trends. It's just a really poignant, sweet and bittersweet reflection back to a time when life was so much simpler for all of our humans and former humans. I hope it turns out as well as we want it to because it's a really special episode."

Vampire Diaries Season 3 Finale KissEdit

"The Departed" will also feature "an important kiss." Now, it's already been revealed that Elena will be making her decision about her feelings for Damon and Stefan. Will the kiss be between her and the one she's chosen? Could it be between Elena and the vampire she hasn't chosen as a goodbye?

It could always not even be between Elena and someone. It could be between Caroline and Tyler. After all, Tyler's future is uncertain if Damon ever finds out their bloodline doesn't trace back to Klaus and it's possible there could be a heartbreaking goodbye kiss if Tyler faces the possibility of death that way. The official description for theseason 3 finale does say, "Caroline and Tyler are forced to make a life-changing decision." Could it be the end of their relationship?

Perhaps something happens again between Jeremy and Bonnie. Jeremy's back in town now, and though she's going to the dance with Jamie, the promo for episode 20, "Do Not Go Gentle," does show him in danger from Klaus. According to the episode synopsis for "The Departed," Jeremy is going to do something in his quest to keep Elena safe and Bonnie's going to make "a secret deal that has heartbreaking consequences." Could something happen to one of them that leads to another kiss between the two?

Zap2it had the opportunity to pre-screen tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries, "Do Not Go Gentle". Below are a list of spoilery teases that include Stelena goodness, weapon welding humans, Esther gone wild and the returnof scary Klaus.

1. Stefan/Elena shippers… your time is now. As promised, the former lovebirds attend the dance together, and it serves as a good opportunity for them to address everything they've been through in the past year. Despite all the tragedy, these two really support each other throughout the episode. In that tearful photo of Elena, she's not crying because she's saying goodbye to Stefan β€” in fact, by the end of this episode, their relationship is stronger than it's been all season.

2. With the vampires trapped at the dance, the humans have to take over the fight… but it doesn't go very well. Matt and Jeremy will point weapons at each other in this episode. Matt's got a gun, Jeremy's got a crossbow, and they'll find themselves in a face-off. It's pretty hot.

3. Bonnie and Jamie grow closer. They not only find time for a hot make-out session (interrupted by Damon, unfortunately) but Bonnie finds herself being vulnerable with Jamie after a year of trying to be strong for everyone.

4. Esther's betrayal pushes Klaus over the edge. If he's been a little soft lately β€” what with the painting and the pining β€” we'll see his dark, terrible side resurface by the end of the episode. He's going to scare us again.

5. The most powerful scene of the entire episode has no dialogue in it at all. If you want to prepareyourselves, download "Medicine" by Daughters. And then stock up on tissues.

The Hollywood Reporter made the pre-screening on tonight's semi-annual Decade Dance episode, "Do Not Go Gentle". The Vampire Diaries Executive Producer Julie Plec, along with cast members Steven R. McQueen, Candice Accola, Michael Trevino and Zach Roerig were on hand to help withspoilery goodness. The group teased emotional and physical death, character transformations, insights not previously revealed and of course, lovetriangles.

Brotherly Compromise: In the episode airing next week, there is a sweet moment shared between Damon and Stefan, one that shows that though they may be in love with the same girl, "they might just survive this," Plec teased. When Ian Somerhalder came into the The Hollywood Reporter offices recently, he revealed just what Plec was alluding to, saying that the Salvatore brothers decide that whoever Elena ultimately chooses will stay, while the other one will leave town.
Stefan Revisits His Emotions: There are several key Stefan and Elena scenes in tomorrow night's episode, though one is broken up by one of Mystic Falls' favorite "villains." In any case, it's a big step for the once-happy couple. "It's finally him saying [to Elena], 'It is OK to feel. I heard you all those times when you that. Now let me give that back to you'," Plec said.
Caroline's Multiple Suitors: If Caroline was in her current predicament (with Klaus and Tyler vying for her affections) in season one, she may have dealt with things far differently than she has. At the moment, Caroline – as it's seen in Thursday's episode – sticks with her gut and fends off Klaus' advances at the dance, which ends up pissing off Tyler. "She is fighting like hell to have a normal relationship with her boyfriend in high school," Accola said. Trevino added that Tyler just "might take some action" when it comes to Klaus in next week's episode.
Simpler Times: The finale will feature a glimpse into Elena's life in simpler times, when vampires weren't in the picture. But there will be a small nugget revealed. "It's a small little runner that goes throughout the episode as Elena is looking back at a part of her life when things were more simple, at least from a supernatural level," Plec said, who was adamant in saying that the incident that killed her parents was "an accident." "We actually will get a little flash of something else during that happened during that time that we didn't really consider and it's more an emotional thing than it is a suspense thing."
On the Up and Up: Though Jeremy started the series on the wrong foot (drug issues and all), according to Plec, now that he's back in Mystic Falls, "Jeremy is on the up." So if there was any doubt or reason to believe he had ulterior motives with any developments (especially in regards to the Delena kiss), put them on the back burner – for now.
Damon's New Drinking Buddy: Dr. Meredith Fell (Torrey DeVitto) could be sticking around past the third season, Plec said, even entertaining the fact that Meredith could become one of Damon's new drinking buddies. Or perhaps more?

Rebekah's New Ally?: When posed the question of whether Rebekah will find someone who will stick by her side, Plec was coy, bringing up the May 10 season finale as a possible indicator of more to come on that end.
Series Endgame Set: Plec revealed that she and executive producer Kevin Williamson set the series' ending while writing the seventh episode of season two in an Atlanta mall. "We were tired and stressed and talked about the last character moments of the show and both started crying in the middle of the mall and just felt like that was right," she recalled. Ideas as to what the lasting image could be?
Shift in the Gilbert Household: After "Do Not Go Gentle" plays out, there may be a change in the Gilbert house – and it's a doozy. We won't reveal just how said change happens, but someone else may have to step up in a very big way.
Safe for Now: With Jeremy back home, will the ring have the same impact on him as it does on Alaric? Maybe, but maybe not. "It definitely means that the stakes of death and resuscitation are possibly not as intense for Jeremy as they were for Alaric," Plec said. "It might not come in the form of Jekyll and Hyde alter-ego." The rings will "be in play for awhile," she also hinted.
Heading Off to College?: Season four will "take us through the rest of their final year in high school," Plec says. "They're making decisions about their future … Do I stay or do I go?" Will there be a Mystic University that pops up? "No, there will not be a Mystic U, although how great," Plec said. "Grams taught at a nearby university and Jenna was getting her masters degree so there's something out there that we'll be introducing and seeing in season four."
Matt and Elena, Not so Perfect: The finale episode spotlights the imperfect relationship Matt and Elena shared. "We get a nice little flash of when they were dating, that they were themselves a troubled relationship," Plec said. "Even though she's remembering a simpler time, her problems were just as complicated."

Many fans were super shocked at the ending twist on The Vampire Diaries last week when it was revealed that Esther had in fact possessed poor Rebekah to jump start her plan.TV Guide spoiled that not only will Esther be returning to her body, but her plans aren't nearly complete.

Now that Esther has the white oak dagger from Alaric's alter ego, she'll leave Rebekah's body and return to her own. But Esther isn't done with Alaric yet. In Today's episode, she'll reveal that she needs something from both Alaric and Elena to carry out her plan of eliminating her family. And what Esther wants, Esther will get.

Rebekah With Klaus in Season 3, Episode 18:

We don't like it when you two are on the same side.

Back when Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was all up in Alaric's (Matt Davis) business, we were worried that the handsome history teacher wouldn't make out of the possession okay. The Vampire Diaries crew is faced with another body snatcher in Season 3, Episode 20, "Do Not Go Gentle." (What is it about decade dances and taking over someone's body?) While only evil Alaric is currently aware that Rebekah (Claire Holt) is being inhabited by her mama, Esther (Alice Evans), executive producer Julie Plec told TVLine that it won't stay a secret for long.

Plec promises, "it all comes to a head right away in the next episode," and everyone will figure out pretty quickly Rebekah isn't really Rebekah. (Let's hope Matt doesn't try and put the moves on her, because we've never really pictured him as cougar bait.) Once they learn that they're really dealing with Esther, events unfold rapidly.

"It's a temporary problem," Plec says of the Rebesther situation. "It will resolve itself quickly and effectively." But not before Esther and evil Alaric cook up a scheme. "What she sees in [his] alter ego is someone who loathes vampires and could be a useful ally in her quest to kill her children," Plec explains. "She has big plans for the hunter in him."

Hm, we'd really love to see Esther get transferred to Alaric's body next, because we'd love to see what kind of dance moves Matt Davis busts out while playing a 1,000-year-old female witch.

Caroline and Klaus in Season 3, Episode 20:

Just give in, Caroline. This is starting to get ridiculous.

The reunion between Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) in Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 19, "Heart of Darkness" was sweet, hot, and short-lived. Just when the two were connecting over their possible deaths by bloodline, Tyler found Klaus's (Joseph Morgan) pony picture and stormed out in a huff. Hybrids!

Caroline and Klaus Dance in Season 3, Episode 20:

Why does it feel so right when it should feel so wrong?!

Then we saw a spoiler-y promo picture for Season 3, Episode 20, "Do Not Go Gentle" with an intimate-looking Klaroline moment, and we wondered if the Tyler-Caroline decade dance reconciliation would be a flash in the pan, as well. Julie Plec, executive producer extraordinaire, spoke with TVLine about where the blonde vamp's head is at these days. "Caroline doesn't understand what draws her to Klaus [just like] any young woman who is seduced by and charmed by and intrigued by a dangerous man," Plec explains. "There's a lot of things that she can't really explain about herself and her connection to him." Two words, Caroline: the accent.

Never fear, Forwood fans. Despite her Klaus-fusion, Caroline isn't giving up on Tyler that easily. "She's made her loyalty to Tyler and her love for Tyler very clear and will continue to have to do that," says Plec. Let's be fair, though. The hybrid did overreact to finding the drawing. (It's not like Caroline was hiding it either. There it was, on her bedside table β€” as though she gazes at it every night before going to sleep.)

So Ty will come to grips with the fact that he was acting like kind of a punk. "[Tyler will] deal with that in the next episode, realizing that, 'Hey, I sort of brought this on myself by leaving and leaving the opening for this guy to come in and move in on my girl,'" Plec tells TVLine.

Interesting. Perhaps the reason Caroline is getting so close to Klaus is because of Tyler's sire bond β€” or because she has a vested interest in keeping him alive now?

Stefan, Elena, and Damon in Season 3, Episode 20:
Photo Credit: Bob Mahoney/The CW 2012 The CW Network

Is the part of the evening where someone almost dies?

Eyeballs were popping in Vampire Diaries Season 3, Episode 19, "Heart of Darkness" after a steamy motel makeout between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev). But all's fair in love and triangles, and in Season 3, Episode 20, "Do Not Go Gentle," it's Stefan (Paul Wesley) who gets to spend some time with the object of his affection β€” thanks toCaroline's (Candice Accola) advice.

Though Rose (Lauren Cohan) was rooting for Damon and Elena, Caroline is taking the opposite stance. As executive producer Julie Plec told Entertainment Weekly, "Elena, still being very confused about her feelings for Damon β€” which obviously exist, it's just how does she want to define them β€” gets schooled by Caroline, who is proudly wearing her Team Stefan T-shirt at the beginning of this episode, metaphorically speaking. She's basically saying, 'You're supposed to be exploring, so explore both sides. You and Stefan, in my opinion, are meant to be. So make sure that you explore him, too.' That encourages Elena to reach out to Stefan and say, 'Look, I don't know what's going on with us, or if anything can ever go on with us, but why don't we give this one night a shot to just spend some time together."

In promo photos for the episode, Elena and Stefan do get some time together, and she even ends up in his arms β€” albeit in tears. Their moment doesn't last long, however. "There's two moments where Damon interrupts something romantic accidentally," admits Plec.

Hey, this is Mystic Falls, and sometimes there are bigger problems than two brothers being in love with the same girl. We're guessing Damon's romantus interruptus has everything to do with a spell that requires Bonnie (Kat Graham), Stefan, and virtually every other member of the crew.

Ah well. There's always the second decade dance of the year.

Vanessa: Please tell me we'll be getting more Delena goodness on Vampire Diaries!
Sorry Damon and Elena fans, but your favorite ship takes a backseat to Stefan and Elena in tonight's episode, which contains barely any interaction between Delena at all. Stefan and Elena, on the other hand, share some pretty tender moments, including one that may cause water to fall from your eyes. So, yeah, this love triangle is just getting more and more intense, and we can't get enough.
