The Vampire Diaries' Daniel Gillies: Elijah Taking Elena Hostage Was The Ultimate Disgrace

When The Vampire Diaries' Elijah was introduced in Season 2, he wasn't supposed to stick around long. More than a year after his arrival the character remains one of the most popular in the show's history.

"In the beginning I was a very old vampire who was going to live like two episodes," Daniel Gillies explains to TVGuide.com. "They didn't know I was going to be a brother, I [just] was a henchman." But Elijah has transformed from being terrifyingly powerful in his knowledge and skills, to a still powerful vampire, but one with a distinct moral compass and compassion for Elena who Gillies calls a warrior.

Fans can't get enough of the Original, despite the immense threat he poses to the Salvatore Brothers, among others. Gillies has his own theories as to his character's popularity. "When Elijah shows his face you know things are going to happen," he says. "When he turns up he's exposition and movement and the story is taking flight β€” or maybe fans just like his multiple haircuts."

While Elijah prides himself on not being driven by impulsive rage like his brother Klaus, Gillies says that his actions towards Elena in last week's episode were so terrifying that it's the reason he fled town at the end.

"Elena came quite close to peril and closer to peril than he ever thought she would and there's a disgrace in that," Gillies says. "He can be vicious and can be strategic, but he's never reckless and this was one of the few times on the show we've seen him be absolutely reckless in order to get what he needed. Sure, it was his life and the life of his brothers and sister, but placing Elena in the position of being a hostage was probably something he would change if he could go back or at least make certain she wasn't in true danger."

Despite Elijah's upcoming absence (which we hope and assume will be temporary), Gillies has quite a few ideas as to who he'd like to work with in the future.

"I really enjoy my scenes with Ian Somerhalder. There's something very funny about those two in a scene together β€” they're sort of an odd couple," Gillies says. "Elijah is the sadistic, quiet, calm zinger- type comedy, whereas Damon is this snarky, sometimes bitchy and tempestuous vampire. Of course, if I could team up with anybody, I just feel like if [Klaus and Elijah] could ever solve their differences the world would be theirs."

Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder: Damon and Stefan's Rift Will be Explained in "1912"
Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder

When The Vampire Diaries flashed back to the early 1900s to explore Stefan's ripper origins, Damon was very much absent from his brother's life. When the CW series travels to that era again, viewers will see exactly how the rift between the Salvatore boys was created.

Vampire Diaries Photos! Flash back 100 years to "1912"

"You start to see the rebirth of Damon Salvatore and where he was in 1912," Ian Somerhalder tells TVGuide.com. "You learn a lot about the dynamic of Stefan [Paul Wesley] and Damon and how it changed."

Although the pair has had more than a century of ups and downs, Somerhalder is confident that the strength of their brotherhood outweighs their differences β€” even the ones that involve a certain brunette named Elena (Nina Dobrev). "These guys could've killed each other a hundred times and they can't. They just cannot end it," he says. "They're the only two that know each other and understand each other ... and at the end of the day they do love each other and they have to take care of each other."

Vampire Diaries Spoilers: The Next Decade Dance Will Take Place In…

Time to head to the thrift store. The first of the semiannual (they had two last year!) decade dances is upon Mystic Falls High School, according to Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec. The show runner tweeted the spoiler herself on February 28, and the decade the writers have chosen is very fitting.

"I swear I must've been a songbird in the 20's. This makes me WAY too happy. #spoileralert #decadedance youtu.be/CFA6dEwWOb4 via@youtube," Plec wrote. The video linked was to Dutch jazz singer Caro Emerald's "That Man."

Earlier in the season, TVD flashed back to the roaring '20s, showing Stefan's (Paul Wesley) Ripper days in a flapper-filled Chicago. Maybe seeing Rebekah (Claire Holt) in a fringed dress and elbow-length gloves will reawaken their romance? Something tells us the Original won't be denied another school dance.

@ bold: is that friend is Meredith? when and how they became friends in need? 3*16 synopsis are saying Elena is convinced Meredith is a murderer πŸ˜• how very confusing is this? and who is the actual murderer?

Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on Vampire Diaries

Kicking things off with a dip into the reader mailbag, Amy writes, "I didn't like the way things ended with Klaus and Caroline. Please say they forgive and make up?" Oh, it'd be far too simple to just tell you what you want to hear. Instead, exec producer Julie Plec offers you this response: "Klaus definitely presents a seductive allure for Caroline, but she claims her heart belongs to Tyler ' and in Episode 20, at the school's decade dance, we'll see that put to the test."
