The Last Day

Damon listens in the other room as Elijah brings Stefan up to speed about Klaus's curse, that he is half werewolf and half vampire, that the curse has kept his werewolf aspect from manifesting. If he breaks the curse, he'll be a true hybrid. Damon finally can't take it any longer and bursts into the room and suggests they allow Bonnie to destroy Klaus, but Elena won't hear of it -- she won't let her friend die.  Stefan asks how to break the curse, leading Elijah to explain the ritual. The moonstone channels the power of the full moon to release the power bound within the stone. After that, Klaus must sacrifice both werewolf and vampire. Elena is the final part of it -- he has to drink the blood of the doppelganger to the point of her death.  He then produces a very old looking bottle, explaining that he procured it for Katherine originally. He explains that the elixir within possesses mystical properties of resuscitation. Since the ritual requires the doppelganger to be drained to the point of death, the elixir will bring her back to life. Theoretically. Damon doesn't trust that it'll work. He asks if John's ring will work, and Elijah explains that the ring only works on humans, and the doppelganger is a supernatural occurrence. It probably won't work. Elena insists there is no other way. Elena asks if Klaus has everything he needs for the ritual, including a werewolf. Elijah says that if he doesn't already have one, that by tonight he will.  Carol Lockwood is on the phone and calls Tyler, telling him to come home. She says he's had an accident and she's in the hospital. She sounds desperate, pleading as she climbs the stairs. When she reaches the top stair, we see that her words have been fed to her by Maddox, one of Klaus's witches. When she gets off the phone, she asks Maddox why she said that. The witch explains that she's had a terrible fall. With a flick of his hand, he sends her flying down the stairs, slamming against the banister on the way, leaving her crumpled and unconscious.  She comes to in the hospital to see Tyler waiting at her bedside.  Elena talks to Elijah, who asks her if she knows what she's risking. She says that Klaus is here because of her, and she needs to try to stop him.  Elena hears Jenna telling someone to leave, and runs in to see Jenna aiming a crossbow at Alaric. He insist that it really is him and that Klaus let him go to deliver a message: The sacrifice happens tonight.  Elsewhere, Sheriff Forbes asks Matt to continue the ruse with Caroline to get more information. She says she knows Caroline is a vampire, but she still looks at her and sees her as her daughter. Matt reminds the sheriff that Damon is the problem, not Caroline. Sheriff thanks him, saying she shouldn't have involved him. She says she'll take it from here.  Alaric sits with Stefan, Elena and Jenna and explains that he doesn't remember anything from when Klaus possessed him. As they talk, they realize Damon isn't in the room, so Elena goes to get him.  Meanwhile, Alaric asks, "So what else did I do?" Jenna cringes.  Elena finds Damon sulking in a nearby room, and he angrily asks Elena if she really trusts that the elixir will bring her back to life. She says she doesn't know, but she can't see another way. Damon tells Elena that he can't lose her. She assures him he won't. They lock eyes for a moment too long, then Elena turns to leave. But Damon suddenly speeds ahead and blocks her. "There is another way," he says, and grabbing her, bites his wrist and forces the wound into to her mouth. Stefan comes in and stops him, enraged that he tried to turn her against her will. They come to blows, until Damon impales Stefan with a table leg. Elena tells Damon to get out. Ric and Jenna run in, and Ric sends Jenna to the basement for blood.  In another room Damon tells Elijah he knows the elixir wouldn't have worked. Elijah replies that Damon's problem is that he talks a good game, but the problem is he doesn't really know anything at all.  "She'll never forgive you," Elijah tells him. "And never, for a vampire, is a very long time."  Stefan comforts a shaken Elena, and tells her that he wants to take her away for a day, just to get away from it all. He says they've never talked about what it means to be a vampire, but now it the time.  Ric tells Jenna he'll explain everything, but it clearly doesn't matter. She kisses him, and all is forgiven.  Tyler runs into Jules at the hospital, who tells him that they need to get locked up. But it gets worse. Outside in the parking lot they bump into Caroline. Awkward. Jules steps away to give them a moment. Caroline tries to chat with him, but is suddenly seized with pain...as is Tyler. Both of them collapse as two of Klaus's witches step out from behind an ambulance and nabs both of them.  Damon is drowning his sorrows at the bar with Alaric when Klaus steps up to taunt him. He tells Damon that he has his vampire and his werewolf, and the ritual is happening tonight. He advises Damon to stay out of it, and walks off. Damon, of course, decides to try to postpone the ritual. He asks Alaric whether Elena will forgive him if he removes the werewolf from the equation and postpones the ritual for another month. Alaric tells him he'll be dead in any case. Damon asks, "So, are you going to help me or what?"  Alaric replies, "What do you want me to do?"  Meanwhile, Stefan takes Elena into the woods to a waterfall. He asks if she wants to talk about what just happened, and about the fact that she's going to be a vampire. She says she doesn't want to talk about it. Fine enough, Stefan says, and tells her they're going to climb to the top of the mountain to enjoy her last day as a human. Later, Elena asks what to expect and Stefan explains how every emotion will become extreme: everything is more beautiful, but anger swells to rage, sadness becomes despair. That's why most vampires turn off their emotions. She asks how long it took for him to handle the good and the bad, and he said he's still trying. He asks what other questions she has, and she tells him that they should just keep walking.  Alaric takes Damon to his apartment to talk to Katherine, who is none too happy to see him. He tells her he's collecting on his debt, for giving her the vervane. He asks where Klaus is keeping the werewolf, and at first she refuses, saying that she's not the vampire being sacrificed. Turns out Klaus grabbed Tyler Lockwood and Caroline Forbes, so it's not her problem. Then Damon tells Katherine that Elena has vampire blood in her system, which means they'll be competing for Stefan's affections for all eternity. Katherine, suddenly vibrating with jealousy, tells Damon Klaus is hiding them in the tomb.  Later, Klaus comes home to find Katherine making coffee. He asks her what she's been doing, and she insists she's only been making coffee. He grabs her by the throat and compels her to tell him what she's been doing, but she sticks to her story. He orders her to take off her bracelet and stand in the sunlight by the window. Haltingly, she follows his instructions, screaming as she burns. He tortures her for a moment, then lets her go. As she crouches in the corner, he tells Katherine he has a job for her.  In a basement, Caroline and Klaus come to, and Caroline realizes she can't get out. Tyler asks if she's OK, and she says the witches vervaned her, and explains that they're with Klaus. Tyler asks who Klaus is. Caroline suddenly looks very scared. "Tyler...you shouldn't have come back here."  Damon walks up to the opening of Klaus's dungeon, but finds it protected by a witch. At first he's strong enough to get the upper hand, but the witch uses his power to telekinetically send Damon flying through the air. It looks as if Damon is about to lose, but a shot rings out and a bullet tears through the witch's chest. Damon breaks the witch's neck and looks up to see that his savior is none other than Matt.  Damon explains to Matt that he's at the tomb to rescue Caroline, then thanks him by knocking him out and taking his rifle. He clears the chamber to discover that the bullets were wooden.  In Klaus's dungeon, Tyler is explaining to Caroline that during the time he was away, Jules was helping him come to terms with being a werewolf. Caroline asks Tyler why he left her, and he said he left because she hated him. Caroline tells Tyler that she could never hate him. Before they can continue, Damon bursts in and frees Caroline. He's about to leave Tyler behind, but Caroline insists that Damon free him too. Damon asks if he can get far enough away from the tomb before nightfall, and Tyler offers to go to his family's cellar, where he can lock himself up. Caroline says she'll help. Damon unlocks him saying, "Don't make me regret this."  Stefan and Elena make it to the top of the hill they were climbing, and stare out over the treetops at a sunset. Elena realizes that if Damon would do what he did to her, then he doesn't know what love is. Then she admits that she probably doesn't either. She tells Stefan that she knows she loves him, but that at 17 she was supposed to take life as it comes, to have a family, and grow old, but now that's been taken from her. She weeps as Stefan holds her close. She says she doesn't want to be a vampire, that she never wanted to be one.  Outside of Klaus's dungeon, Caroline discovers Matt moaning as he's coming to. It's also dark, and the full moon is peeking through the clouds. Tyler groans and announces that the change is starting. Damon rolls his eyes, telling Caroline to "grab Boy Wonder" so they can get going.  Stefan and Elena return from their hike, and Elena thanks him for the day. That's when Stefan sees Klaus waiting for them in the mist. Klaus asks Elena if she's ready, and she says she is. Stefan moves to stop Klaus, but Elena holds him back, saying there's no reason for him to get hurt. Elena kisses Stefan deeply and says, "I love you." Stefan says "I love you" back to her, and they kiss again. She tells Stefan to close his eyes, and after a pause, he does. When he opens them, Elena and Klaus are both gone.  Stefan goes back to the house and calls Damon, telling him that Klaus has taken Elena. Damon tells him that he'll take care of it. But big brother has bigger problems: Tyler is transforming, faster than he expected. Damon sends Caroline and Matt to Tyler's family cellar, armed with the loaded gun, telling them that if the cellar could keep Tyler in then it should keep him out as well. They run.  Klaus and Katherine are at the apartment, Klaus giddy about his impending victory and watching footage of a cringing figure in a basement...until the door flies open. It's Damon, bragging that he's gotten rid of Klaus's werewolf and vampire and killed his witch, so his ritual is off. Damon is sure to repeat, with certainty, that he acted completely alone and Klaus can feel free to kill him. Klaus asks Katerina to leave them.  Klaus smiles and tells Damon that he was certain that either Stefan or Damon would try to stop him. It was just a fifty-fifty shot. Then he hands his mobile over to Damon so that he can see the chained up figure for himself. It's Jules. The nice thing about werewolves, Klaus tells Damon, is that they tend to travel in packs.  "When you spend a thousand years trying to break a curse, you learn a thing or two," Klaus whispers to Damon. "First rule: Always have a backup. Back-up werewolf, back-up witch."  "Back-up vampire," Damon says, wearing an expression that indicates he knows he's utterly screwed.  "I've got that covered, too." Klaus lunges at him.  Matt and Caroline make it to Tyler's cellar, and lock themselves into a cell. Tyler comes in, fully transformed. Caroline tries to talk to him, but Wolf Tyler lunges at the bars.  Damon comes to on the floor, and Katherine apologizes to him, saying she had to do it or else he would know she was using vervane. Katherine says Klaus made her "call her" to lure her out. He needed another vampire.  Damon looks concerned. "Who did you call, Katherine?"  Elena is walking through the woods with Klaus's lead witch, Greta. Elena tells Greta her family is looking for her, and Greta snaps that she was never lost. Elena then complains that she can't see anything, so Greta waves her hand and lights her path with fire. Ahead of her Elena sees a figure on the ground. It's Jenna.  Elena runs to Jenna and checks her pulse, then starts to cry -- she's dead.  That's when Jenna sits up with a start.  "She's not dead," Greta says with a smile. "She's in transition."  Back at the apartment, Damon is asking Katherine why Klaus didn't use him. Katherine replies that Klaus told her that he was as good as dead. "What does that mean?" Damon says.  Katherine points to a seeping wound on his arm. "Damon, what is this?"  Damon looks at the sore and sees that it's spreading.  It's a werewolf bite.
