All your points are valid. A serial cannot be called just because it is having low TRPs.

Very well written post Shobs!

Will be back with my points. Till then reserved!

But just to add a small point, I agree with the theory of shorter shelf life for a serial, with pre-decided story! And just like nowadays, the trend of "Season 2s and 3s" is "in" , I think Its a viable option to have different seasons of our favorite shows. It'll not only spare us the heartbreaks , plus we'd be sure of getting some good content to watchSmile

Very good post. Glad u opened this post. I too have the same thought process. Time and again good shows have been sacrificed at the alter of TRPs. The most appropriate thing u mentioned is about the shelf-life of a show. it should be pre-decided so that there is no confusion in the future. Brings to mind YRF's show Powder which was decided from the start to have only 24 episodes . to date its the best show I have seen. Every episode was beautifully handled and the story was also thrilling. the subject was also a much needed one. Don't know if many of u have watched it but it was one show I really liked.

This is an Interview of Meghna Malik ( Ammaji From Na Aana Is Des Laado ) taken somewhere around the leap time in the show. Its nice to read about TRPs from an Actor's perspective.

TRPs rule the roost, affect storyline: TV actress Meghna Malik

December 20th, 2010

New Delhi, Dec 20 – Television actress Meghna Malik, the popular Ammaji of 'Na Aana Iss Des Laado' serial that is set to take an 18-year-leap, feels the storyline of serials often falls casualty in the battle over TRPs, leaving the actor dissatisfied.

'TRPs rules the roost due to which the story often gets sidelined and we as an actors have no choice but to be a part of it. It does sometimes affect an actor's satisfaction levels,' Meghna told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

Her character in 'Naa Aana Iss Des Laado' is one of the most powerful characters on the small screen currently. Her role as the rude Ammaji who is against the birth of a girl child has even garnered awards.

The show, aired on Colors, is set to take an 18-year leap now. The story now shifts from rural landscape of Veerpur to Delhi with the introduction of two new characters, Raghav and Sia's (son and daughter-in-law of Ammaji) twin daughters, played by Simran Kaur and Vaishnavi Dhanraj.

Meghna, 39, admits that often shows which start with focus on real-life issues lose track, adding that no single person can be blamed for it.

'It is a show and not a film that can be run with a linear storyline. It becomes important to introduce some drama otherwise people will get bored. The motive of a soap is to entertain people and thus a story has plots and sub-plots,' said Meghna, who has acted in shows like 'Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi', 'Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai' and 'Tujko Hai Salaam Zindagi'.

'Moreover, the writers, directors and the producers have to churn out an episode everyday. So the show cannot be at its best always. One cannot expect great work always. It often becomes different from what is thought,' she added.

She was also seen in Aamir Khan starrer 'Taare Zameen Par' as protagonist Ishaan, played by Darsheel Safary's, maths teacher.

The actress believes that the battle of TRPs is also one of the prime reasons for content of television turning bold, something which created a stir recently in theministry of Information and Broadcasting.

'Boldness on television is also a TRP gimmick, as a result they (show makers) often compromise with aesthetics. It is all dramatized and scripted. People are watching it that's why it is there. Everything is groomed by TRPs today,' she said.

'People are watching a show and still criticising it, which is strange. One can always take the remote and change the channel, but they are not willing to do that,' she added.

Meghna rose to the limelight with a character with grey shades, but admits she is open to doing all kind of roles, even if it requires her to put a lot of glycerine.

'I am open to all kinds of roles as it helps bring forth your capabilities as an actor. I wouldn't mind doing roles which requires me to cry. If you are doing the same kind of roles every time there is no challenge left,' she said.

Cool...I agree with u. And I can also give u an example of it. Maryada is a beautiful show but its TRP is not huge as it deserves. So I think most of indian television viewers don't like new thought. They all love bloody saas bahu dramas. I think they should get out of it and should watch shows of new kind like Maryada, Mukti Bandhan, Geet, Pyar ki ye ek kahani, Na ana is des lado etc. Balika Vadhu will not be in my list because it is going very borring and losting its main target which was to protest against marrige of under 19 agers. Thumbs Up

Meghna very well defined the TRP,influencing the story-line....Many shows which most of the people criticize because of illogical twists or violence are on the top...Viewers are also responsible for this to some extent., because of them channels are churning out same kind of stuff....If some thing different is shown then have very less viewership....

brilliantly written Shobs Clap
I totally agree and sympathize with you as I've been a victim too of this dreaded word TRP... and with the way its going its soon going to turn into a swearword in the television industry...

I couldn't agree  more on the issue of the way the TRPs are can a few households decide the fate of any show? ...what about all the overseas viewers who watch and love the shows equally ?... we have seen shows end abruptly or treated to a whole phase of senseless twists and turns just for the sake of garnering high TRP ,the entire feeling of watching good television has been lost in the race ...

Television is a mighty medium these days and with new channels being launched rapidly, the competition has greatly increased I agree but there must be better ways to combat the issue ...

Initially the channels succeed in riveting the audiences' attention with the vigorous promotion of new shows and once the viewers are hooked to the 'original ' concept ,they either conveniently change the storyline drastically  or put an end to the show altogether blaming it all on the numbers that  the show failed to achieve ...

The viewers and even actors for that matter feel cheated and it puts you off watching television and we fear getting attached to any show as it might end abruptly again....the noteworthy performances by actors who put in such hard work to bring their characters to life ,all is rendered futile ...and their creativity is never satisfied as the channels and production houses fall prey to greatly bothering TRPs...

hope the concerned people give our views a serious thought and begin making sensible ,short term and predecided concept shows and help keep the television charm alive...

Lastly ,please change the way the TRPs are guaged ...dont make the worldwide audiences feel left out !
