Part 8: Encounters of the first kind

His hair had a heap of turmeric rice, enough to serve a small child. At the time of tying the mangalsutra around her neck, the hoards of uncles, aunts and relatives had blessed them with turmeric rice and flower petals. It had seemed appropriate for people around the dias to throw the mixture at them directly. But it had not made sense when the oldies slouched in the third row from the dias had extended the blessing right from where they had been sitting and their shower of the yellow colored rice mixed with the floral pieces had only reached the front row crowd. Well he was only glad he didn't have more of those edible pellets raining on him, for they felt like tiny pin pricks when they were hurled at him with such force.

The customs or the mantras were all Greek to him and yet the slurry words and the tongue twisters were not a problem when in comparison to what he could have done to gain her hand in marriage. All that mattered to him was her; his prized possession who now stood right next to him slightly bent, busy wiping off sandal paste from her niece's cheeks. He smiled at the sight of her while he tried to disperse the rice and petals that did not belong to be part of his hair.

"Argh!..." She had given out a whimper, throwing him in a state of panic. She had quickly drawn her hand towards her face and as soon as she had straightened her back, he knew what had caused the cry of pain. It was he. The turmeric powder that had alighted from his head had flown in all directions and some had -much to his advantage-landed right in her eye.

"Are you ok?" He asked, swiftly turning to her, his hands reaching her left eye tremulously.

But even as he wanted to hold her face and blow the powder away, strangely, Anu Iyengar was the only name that was now racing in his mind. It had been the day he had vowed off Tamil girls from his life literally.

Given that cycles were the preferred way of commuting in the campus, the potholes in the roads had challenged infinite number of cycle tires and had brought down one too many girls off their seat. And on one of his not-so-lucky days he had been privy to witness the befall of Anu, the much sought after girl of his batch. He had immediately flung his own cycle to the ground and had run to help her. He had noticed that she had a bruised knee and elbow. Being the naive kindred soul that he was, he had offered concern by brushing off the sand and mud that had stuck to the sides of her knee and hand, when she had shot him cold stares and foul look that had instantly frozen his Punjabi goodwill. He had ignored her nasty glance and had helped her up by her upper arm, which had further invoked her profanities in Tamil. Of course he didn't know what she had muttered under her breath, but her body language and her resistance to his touch had sincerely conveyed her thanklessness that day. Not to call it sour grapes, he had helped many a south girl and had landed in similar nippy experiences making him swear off anything to do with Tamil women.

But Geet had always been an exception and so mustering up his courage, all the while reminding himself that she was only his wife, he did just what his heart had asked of him that needy moment.

With one hand reaching to pull up her upper eyelid and the other cupping her left cheek, he attempted to gently blow into her eye. Just as his cool breath glided down her face, her pulse had throbbed by the side of her jaw. She was shaking as she realized they were still in the dias, with a dozen of her relatives and cousins seated around to let out a "Aah!" at his care and affection for her. Fighting the embarrassment, while at the same time wanting to fall into his arms, she fumbled with her hands not knowing if she should shove him away. But to her relief, he had left go off her face after a couple of tries and had asked her if she wanted to wash her eyes with some water. She had quietly nodded yes as she had sighed loudly and let out the breath she had sucked in that second he had held her close. Uff! That had come as quite a test to her will power.

Maan bent down to untie the knot that held together the piece of cloth around his neck and the tip of her sari, but Susheela athai had interrupted the same instant.

"No...No...you can't untie it or take off the garlands until the Rahukaalam is over. Wait for another 5 mts" She said, throwing yet another silly belief at them, which apparently turned out to give him the much needed privacy that he had craved for ever since she became his.

As they darted to the groom's room together, she knuckled up and brought her hand to rub her irritant eye. But he caught her hand midair, just in time to stop her and said, "Don't Geet...you will worsen it" She didn't understand the warmth that was growing inside her for him. She struggled to name the feeling while he was always on the look out for her...that minute and during the boring ceremonies. Now that she was falling for him, it seemed possible to recant her opinions of the stranger she had thought she was to marry. It was surprising that such small acts of care could change her mountain of hatred she had borne for her future husband, when she had had no clue that it would be him.

He stood outside and far from the door, as much as the length of the cloth around his neck allowed without tugging her sari. She needed that much privacy for sure, he had thought. But he could not help wonder what they would have done, had one of them wanted to use the bathroom privately. Perhaps that is why they never fed or gave them a drink in the name of fasting until all the "Kaalams" were over, he safely concluded.

She came out and shyly turned away from him diagonally as he stood leaning on the wall. A playful thought passed his mind, as he saw her blush in their alone minute that the thronging crowds had graciously presented them. Before she could intercept his quick actions, he had grabbed her by her waist and had his firm hold around her wrists. God! She sighed mentally.

"How is my wife doing now?" He asked with a smile. With his entire bare chest in view, she battled herself to keep a coherent thought around. She knew she would blabber if she was to let out any word to answer him, and so she opted silence with a smile in return. But he wouldn't let go and nudged her intimately by her wrists.

Her coy self fought him as he raised their hands in mid air and suddenly turned around to pin her to the wall. With her hands stuck to the cool enamel paint of the wall on either side of her head, he came to lean on her.

"So you won't talk to me...Is that how it is?" He asked her tilting his head sideways to catch her lowered gaze. She couldn't help but give out a smile at his question.

"Well if your smile is the answer, then I will just have to read it off your lips then...Don't you..." His words trailed off as he brought his face near, to wrap up the little distance between them. She rapidly shut her eyes as she foresaw the moment in her head and momentarily paused bringing herself to a standstill. His lips lingered close to hers and her heart raced anticipating the time that was to come. It would change everything for her. Her first kiss... As soon as the last words crossed her mind, she only wanted to stall the moment and so she did.

"Maan..." She let out a gentle whisper. To him his own name sounded exotic. Her first word after their marriage was his name; his mind ceased upon her choice and partly marveled at the sudden corniness that was overtaking his logical mind. Lord! The things he did to her, he mulled over.

"We have to go...people are waiting for us to eat" She said in yet another soft mumble. He didn't know if it was the sweetness of her voice or his own mind that was conjuring up the dream like lull he was getting drunk in. He felt there was no compensation for what he wanted and her beautiful voice still didn't cut it for now.

"These tricks wont work Geet...Not until I get what is rightfully mine..." He said.

She knew her efforts were all in vain and so she gave in. Once he saw her surrender and as her eyes closed, he let her go and now rested his palms on the side of her head and lowered his head for the much-awaited kiss ever so slowly.

His brain shuddered in palsy as he made sense of what he was about to do. He was to kiss her? The girl he had chased around in a place that spoke an unknown tongue and the one who had chased him in his dreams too...

But as he lay lost in the process of bringing himself over to her lips, he could not comprehend the voice that now reached his ears. It was gruff and so unlike hers. Huh? He shook in disbelief as another tap landed on his shoulders.

"Dude...will you please wake up and tell me what you want?"

Maan jerked opened his eyes and swirled around to find Adhi by his side. Adhi was puzzled himself, watching his friend in the odd stance that he was in.

"Huh!..." His eyes raked the room for her and he caught sight of her outside the door, peeping to secretly steal a look at him. He smiled and tapped his head lightly as he grasped her escape.

She had slid under his arm and had silently walked out of the room when her dumb husband had indeed in hopes of heightening the pleasure had prolonged the moment. Just as she had sighted Adhi come towards her, she had at once thanked her Guruvayoor Krishnan; for any slip in time would have led her cousin to have caught her in an act of passion with her husband. But as Adhi had reached her, she had told him that Maan was looking for something and that he needed help badly; hoping only frivolous retaliation for having held her by her waist, even if it had only been for an unsuspecting second.

"Dude...can you tell me all right?" Adhi insisted now.

"Oh! Forget it..." he said, still looking directly at her by the door.

"Common...what is frustrating the crap out of you? " Adhi went on, being impossible. For the love of god, Maan could not understand what was making him so persistent.

"You are not going to let it go...are you?...here it is..." as he uttered the words, he leaned a bit and held Adhi by his shoulders "All I wanted...was a kiss..." he said as he lowered his face to Adhi's, to scare the shit out of him and Susheela Aunty who had just walked in.

Geet giggled at the two pairs of wide eyes that had just walked off as fast as their feet could carry them, as she muffled her laughter within the inside of her palms.

"Happy? You are going to pay..." he said as he went ahead to join the surprised duo.

"Machax...Don't you ever do that" Adhi wailed, still in disbelief that his friend had pretended to want to kiss him. The very thought now traumatized him.

She caught his eyes as she approached to meet him at the lunch table. She could not shake off the feeling that she deeply yearned to have a name for. Love was too far fetched for now, but she liked the idea that it would one day turn into one...for her own mischievous...yet sweet and cute husband.

She curved her lips into a shy smile at the last word that passed her mind...giving all away, as he locked his eyes with hers, that she was thinking of no one but him.

Hmm…Maan is very bold…Abhi to shaadi hui hai and sir is already demanding kisses and all…Very smart and very phaast…now if only his counterpart from the show could take inspiration and learn a lesson or two! I can totally understand Geet's state of mind as well…A half-naked Maan messes with my thinking abilities too!

I love the relationship you have shown between Maan and Adi…very cute!

Great update, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!
