Gossip Girl Season 4, Ep10 Full Recap & video

Gaslit

Tonight, "Gossip Girl" celebrated a belated Thanksgiving—though the holiday barely figures into tonight's episode, so we're not sure why they bothered setting it on Turkey Day in the first place. In any case: the holiday, naturally, brings a whole Mayflower's worth of drama with it. Though there's some business about Nate's parents (his mother wants to divorce his jailbird father; young Archibald manages to convince her otherwise), the action really centers on Serena, who's still unknowingly being toyed with by Juliet. Got that?

Juliet's master plan, it seems, was to chloroform Serena, then transport her to a seedy motel in Queens and surround her with pill bottles. She also manages to get some pills into Serena's system, since when S wakes up, she can barely get herself together enough to mumble "I don't know where I am" after dialing 911.

The brilliance, so to speak, of Juliet's plan is that Serena has a history with drugs, so once they get word that she's in the hospital, the rest of the cast thinks she's gone off the wagon. Everyone, that is, except Dan, who has a niggling feeling that something isn't adding up.

Lily lets a doctor convince her to send Serena to rehab, and her daughter ends up in the Ostroff Center, the same place Eric went after trying to kill himself in Season 1. (Remember that?) Serena continues to insist that she didn't do anything wrong—and finally, Dan lets her know that he believes her and helps her bust out of rehab. We don't see precisely how this works, which is too bad; we're hoping a wig was somehow involved.

D and S escape to the Brooklyn loft, where they're intercepted by Lily and Blair. The two camps have words with one another, and it seems like nothing will be resolved until a Gossip Girl blast is sent out. The message includes a picture of a masked blonde girl—apparently Serena—doing something that looks a lot like snorting cocaine.

The picture is enough to convince Serena that she must have actually gone wild without remembering why or what she did. Blair, though, eventually learns the truth straight from the horse's mouth: Jenny's mouth, that is.

Little J comes back to Manhattan once she receives the news about Serena. Drugs weren't part of the plan, she tells Juliet—but Big J simply says that she, Jenny, and Vanessa aren't responsible for what Serena did after the party. Juliet manages to scare Vanessa into staying quiet by telling the Brooklynite that while the Van der Humphreys will forgive Jenny because she's family, they wouldn't do the same for V. Vanessa, in turn, betrays the younger girl by telling Rufus that the whole life-ruining thing was all Jenny's doing.

Before she leaves again—and apparently for good, since Taylor Momsen's been suspended from the show—Jenny stops by Juliet's one more time, only to find that the crafty Columbia has skipped town and taken all her stuff with her. She did conveniently leave behind the mask she used to impersonate Serena at the party, which Jenny brings to Blair's apartment as proof of the scheme. Little J confesses the whole sordid plot to Serena's best friend, then bids her good luck bringing Juliet down before heading back to Hudson. (She says that she's coming clean because she "would never hurt Serena for real," which, huh? Remember last season, Jenny?)

As the episode comes to a close, Juliet does make one more appearance—at a clandestine meeting with Lily, who has apparently pledged to give Big J money once a week in exchange for Juliet keeping her mouth shut about whatever teacher Serena had an affair with at boarding school.

And then we witness the birth of an unholy alliance. Blair goes all the way to Brooklyn ("Ew!" we hear her say in our minds) to recruit Dan for a fact-finding mission. Both of them love Serena, she says, and so they have to be the ones to find Juliet and "get us a little frontier justice." This scene might have a greater impact if Dan and Blair had never worked together before, but whatever, we'll take what we can get.
